UNITED STATES PATENT vori-"ICE WILLIAM SCHNELL AND JOHN B. YIILYNN, OFjDETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNORS T0 TERNSTEDT MANUFACTURING COMPANY, 0F
OF MICHIGAN DETROIT, MICHIGAN, A Conroe-Arron SMOKING ycAs'E Application ined August 19, iszsrserial No. 336,922.
This invention relates to a smoking case.
This invention more particularly contemplates a smoking case adapted for use in a vehicle body although it is distinctly understood that the invention may be used other than in vehicle bodies. Although it is not broadly new to provide a smoking case with the cloth panels which cloth is of the same material as the body trimming, it is one of the objects of this invention to improve upon the construction of this type of smoking case. The invention contemplates a smoking case with cloth panels that is simple in construction and very readily assembled.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a front elevation partly broken away to show the spring retaining member for the ash tray.
Fig. 2 is a section along the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the smoking case.
Fig. 4 is a section along the line 4 4 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a detail of the panel cloth.
Fig. 6 is a section along the line 6-6 of Fig. 5. l
Fig. 7 is a perspective of the panel cloth retainer insert.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, it will be seen that the smoking case consists of the four principal parts, namely, the
integral outer frame 1, the panel cloth 2, the panel cloth retainer insert 3, and the removable ash tray 4. The outer frame member is preferably an integral metal stamping having the stamped-out panels 5, although it is understood that the outer frame may be made of any suitable metal other than stamped metal. The integral outer frame has a pocket portion 6 and a marginal rim 7 The stamped-out panels 5 of the pocket portion 6 of the outer frame member are arranged to have inserted therein a suitable trimming material 2 which will match or be of the same material as the body upholstering trimming. In order to hold this cloth material in position properly and to maintain it smooth, neat, and free from wrinkles, a suitable stiffener such as the card board 9 is glued or otherwise fastened tothe lback of the panel cloth. After the panel cloth has been placed within the outer casing so as to show through the panels 5, it is lnecessary to provid-e means for retaining the cloth in position. Y To this end there is provided va' suitable metal insert 3 whichconforms to the interiorvcontour of the outer frame lpocket 6.l This insert 3 has spot-welded or other- Vwise suitably secured thereto as at 11, the U- shaped member 10. The member 10 has a suitable eye 12 arranged to receive the head of ascrew or nail for securing the kcase in position.
The retainer insert 3 is inserted within the outer casing 1 Hush against the card board stiiener 9 to the front of the lugs 13 which are pressed in the bottom of the pocket portion 6 of the outer casing. The lower edge 14 of the insert has suitable depressions l5 which abut the front of the pressed-in abutments 13 to hold the bottom of the insert 3 rmly against the card board stiener 9. The upper portion of the insert 3 is pressed rmly against the card board 9 by the turned over lugs 16 of the pocket portion 6 of the outer frame 1.
`The pocket portion 6 has a suitable opening 17 therein which is adapted to receive the ash receptacle 4. The ash receptacle 4 has the cross bar 18 which serves as a handle for removing the receptacle 4 from the pocket 6 and also serves as a means for flicking the ashes from the cigar or cigarette. The receptacle 4 is removably retained within the pocket 6 by the flat spring 19 which is spotwelded or otherwise suitably secured to the U-member 10 and which resiliently engages one side of the receptacle 4.
The smoking case may be secured to a wall of the vehicle by engaging the U-member 10 by means of the eye 12 to a suitable screw or nail. Then to permanently retain the smoking case in position7 a screw or nail vmay be passed through the opening 20 in the lower part of the rim portion 7.
ket
From the above description it will be seen s Iii is easily assembled and has obviated the necessity for soldering one part to another. What we claim is: 1. A smoking oase comprising in combination, an outer frame having an opening therein7 a cloth, a cardboard stiiening member glued to the back of said cloth for maintaining the same smooth, an independent insert y ,Y
member conforming to the inside Contour of the said outer frame arranged to press against the Card board stiffening member to hold the said card board stiifening member :and clot-h in closed relation with the said opening in the outer frame to effect a panel.
2. A smoking ease comprising in combination, an outer frame having an opening therein, a cloth closure for said opening, an insert for the said frame arranged to engage the cloth and hold it rmly over the opening,
the bottom of said `frame having a pressedout projection for engaging the said insert at the lower edge, and the top of said frame having a lug for engaging the top of said insert whereby the frame is held irmly in position.
In testimony whereof we aix our signatures.
