Description
Patented Nov. 9, 1943 STATES i time COMBINATION LUGGAGE Sydney S. Feinberg, Fall River, Mass. Application August 22, 1942, Serial No. 455,743
1 Claim.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in combination luggage.
More particularly, the invention contemplates a Still further the invention contemplates a novel arrangement for adjustably holding said partition so that the relative sizes of the compartments may be varied.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and ccompanying drawing, and to the appended claim in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a piece of combination luggage constructed in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view, as though taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1, but illustrated with the covers thereof. open.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view of a piece of luggage constructed in accordance with a modified form of this invention.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary enlarged detailed view of a portion of Fig. 4. Y
Fig. 6 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 6-6 of Fig. 4.
The combination luggage, according to this invention, includes a box-like body It having a top wall ll, end Walls l2, a bottom walll3, and a back wall 14. A cover i5 is hingedly mounted on the front of said body for closing the same. The cover I5 is supported by the hinges l6 which are connected with the bottom wall it. Several looks I! are provided for holding the coverin its closed position. A handle 8 for the piece of luggage is mounted upon said top wall 1 l. V I
The top wall H has its corner which is adjacent to the back wall 54 formed with an opening 29. This opening extends from end to end of the v piece of luggage. A corner cover 2| is provided for closing this corner opening. Several hinges 22 connected with said top wall I I serve to hingedly support the corner cover 2!. Latch means 23 are mounted on the-end walls l2 and are cooperative with the ends of the corner cover 2! by which the cover 2| may be latched closed.
A partition 24 is disposed longitudinally of and across the interior of the body in dividing it into a front compartment 25 for personal apparel or a phonograph, and a back compartment 26 for filing papers or phonograph records.
Figs. 4-6 disclose a modified form of the invention which distinguishes from the prior form in the fact that the partition 24' is adjustable to several transverse positions for varying the relative sizes of the compartments 25 and 2B. This means for adjustably holding the partition 24 includes a bottom strip 28 mounted on the bottom wall I3 to extend forwardly and rearwardly thereof. The strip'28 is formed with severalo-penings '29 arranged in a forward and rearward line. A bottom peg 30 projects from the bottom of the partition 24 and engages one of the openings 29. The
top of the partition 24' is adjustably supported.
More specifically, the top of the partition 24' is held in one of several positions by several racks 3| which extend forwardly and rearwardlyof the luggage. cavity 32 formed in the inner face of the top wall ll. Each rack 3| is pivotally supported at its rear by a pintle 33. Each rack 3| has its front end loosely and swivelly connected to a screw 32 which is threadedly mounted through the top wall H. The top edge of the partition 24engages between certain teeth of the racks 3|.
When desired the screws 34 may be turned upwards to pivot the racks 3! so that they are free from the. partition 24. The partition 2 may then be lifted up and the bottom peg3l set in a difierent one of the apertures 29. The screws may then be turned downward and the top edge of the partition 34 may be caught between selected teethofthe racks 3i. Thus the relative sizes of the compartments 25 and 265 may be varied. l
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodimentsof my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
p -A piece of combination luggage havinga box- Each rack 3| is housed within a] like body with a top wall and a bottom wall and a vertical partition wall dividing the interior of said body into separate compartments, means on said bottom Wall for holding the vbottom edge of said partition wall in various forward or rearward positions within said body, spaced forwardly and rearwardly extending racks formed with teeth for engaging the top edge of said partition Wall for holding the topedge of said wall in various for- 7 ward or rearward positions corresponding to the forward .or rearward positions of said bottom edge,
m edge thereof with means for pivotally mounting one of theends of said racks upon said top wall, and screws thread; edly engaged through said top wall and having their inner ends turnably connected with the other ends of said racks for holding said racks in a position in which certain of their teeth engage the top edge of said wall or in a pivoted position free of said top wall so that said top wall may be moved forwards or rearwards aligning the top .SYDNEY $.7FEINBERG;
