Description

March 15, 1932. 1. BALDINGER TUFTING DEVICE Filed May 9, 1929 INVENTOR flw/ng Bah/Myer Patented Mar. 15, 1932 1 m TAT 1 m; BALDINGER, or BROOKLYN, NEW Yoiur Turrme n vIcE Application filed.- May 9, 1929. Serial No. 361,578.
with facility be concealed'between two oppos ing sheets of the mattress. 4
Among other objects of the presentinvention it is aimed to provide an improved tufting device consisting of eyelets formed in opposing sheets of a mattress, wire loops operatively associated with such eyelets, and loops of threador cordoperativ'elyconnecting the wire loops of opposing sheets of the mattress. V v, It is still anotherobject of the present in- Vention to providelan improved 'tufting device which can be made at a'minimum cost andbe applied with facility by the average unskilled operator.
These and other features, capabilities and advantages of the invention will appear from the subjoined detail description of specific embodiments thereof illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a fragmental section of a mattress equipped with the present invention Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmental portion of the mattress showing the tufting devices connected thereto; 7
Fig. 3 is a fragmental plan of one of the tufting devices connected in place; and
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of another embodiment of wire loop forming a part of the tufting device. 7
In the embodiment illustrated, there is shown a mattress havingan upper upholstered portion 1 and a lower upholstered portion 2 spaced from one another by the springs 3. The upholstered portion lhas an outer sheet member 4 and the upholstered portion 2 has an outer sheet member 5, which sheet members are provided with eyelets 6 fastened therein in the usual way. These eyelets have connected thereto wire connectors 7 which have loops 8. The loops 8 are formed to receive the loop 9 of a flexible element such as a thread or cord whereby the opposing sheets 4 and of the upholstered portions 1 and 2 respectively may be connected together. ,I
The eyelets 6, as shown in Fig. 2, preferably have a central opening .10 formed'byv the cylindrical portion 11, 'hafving an elongated fiange portion 12 positioned on the outer face of the sheet, for instance the sheet 4 illustrated in Fig. 2, and the flange portion 13 clamped against the inner face of the sheet for instance the sheet 4 illustrated in Fig. 2.
' The eyelet, in the present instance, is provided with two diametrically opposed orifices l4 and 15, see Figs. 2 and 3, which-arepreferablyprovided .in the recesses 16 and 17- re spectively which register with one another,
see for instance Figs. 2 and 3. In actual use, the sheets 4 and 5 are preferably previouslyv provided with the eyelets 6 and so arranged that they will substantiallyregister with. one
another. a
I Through the openings. 14 and 15" of each eyelet 6 extend the prongs 18 and 19 of a connector 7 with-the loop portion SBXl'BIld- 'ing through the central opening '10 of the eyelet 6 inwardly of the sheet member'to" which the eyelet is connected. The loop of thread or cord passes throughthe loops8, 8,
'of opposing connectors 7 and are tied to gether as indicated in Fig. 1 by any suitable v 1 means such as the knot 20. V In actual use, the user causes a loopof thread or cord 9 to pass through the loop 8 I of the connector 7 extending through an eyelet 6 in the lower sheet 5, and brings the two threads upwardly through the'eyelet 6 in the upper sheet 4', there ties a knot 20 in the loop 9 and passes a connector 7through such loop 9 so thatit will extend throughthe loop "'8 and then passes the prongs 18 and 19 through the openings 14' and 15 of the eyelet. n The opposing upholstered portions 1 and2 of the mattress are generally pressed in when theloop 9 of the thread is passed through the eyelet 6 in the upper sheet 4, and consequent;
when the same is released, theoutw-a rd tenfsion of the-two upholstered portions 1' and 2 will cause the thread quickly to seek fits position with the knot 20 concealed betwe'enithe sheets 4 and 5 respectively. In Fig; 2, the
"upper sheet 4 is 'shown brokenaway'; and pro? 1 PATENT oF Fm fj I vided with two eyelets and its wire loops, the eyelet to the left being shown at right angles to the eyelet at the right, although it is obvious that these eyelets may have all of their recesses 16 and 17 in alinement with one an and 22 in the prongs l8 and 19 which will co operate with the eyelet 6 of the orifices 14: and 15 to anchorthe connector 7 against acci dental displacement, see Fig. 4:.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the loops 9 will only engage rounded surfaces, for instance the rounded surface of the wire connector 7, and thus not be subjected to any abrasive wearing action during the use of the'mattress, which is or course conducive to the long life of these connecting threads or cords. It will also be seen that the forma tion of the connector 7 is 'madeout of pieces of wire, serving to decrease the cost of production of these connectors to a minimum.
It is obvious that various changes and modifications may be made to the details of construction without departing from the general-spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
I claim: v
1. Ina device of the character described, the combination with the opposing sheets of a mattress, of eyelets secured to said sheets, the eyelets in the opposing sheets being arranged in registering pairs, there being oriflees in said eyelets, wire connectors, each wire connector having a pair of prongs-and an intermediate loop, the prongs of each wire connector extending into the orificesof an eyelet with the intermediate loop'ex'tending through the center of the eyelet inwardly of the mattress sheet, and cords formed into loops, each cord connecting the intermediate loops of the wire connectors of a pair of eyelets.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with the two sheets of a mattress, of eyelets secured to said sheets, the eyelets in such opposing sheets being arranged in pairs, there being a pair of alined recesses in each eyelet, there being an-orifice in the bottom of each recess, awire connector having a pair of prongs and an intermediate loop for each eyelet, the prongs of each connector extending through the pair of oricured to said sheets, the eyelets in the op posing sheets being arranged in registering pairs, there being a pair of orifices in each eyelet, a wire connector having a pair of prongs and an intermediate loop for each eyelet, the prongs of each connector extending through the pair of orifices of an eyelet and'the intermediate loop' extendinginward- 1y through the central opening of the eyelet, each prong having a depression adjacent its free-endto'cooper'ate with the eyelet to form an anchoring means, and a loop of cord or the like connecting the intermediate loops of the wire connectors of each pair of eyelets.
4:. Fastening means for mattress tufting stitches comprisingan' eyelet-adapted to be secured "in the outer sheet of a mattress, a stitch end holder consisting 'of, a metallic connector arranged for insertion through said eyelet from the outside and having means toengage the sides of the" eyelet, said eyelet and connector having cooperating means to hold the connector against rotation in theeyelet. M
