This invention relates to chimney or flue caps.

The main object of the invention is to pro vide a cap which is so constructed that it will prevent sparks from rising from the chimney, will prevent rain from flowing down the chimney and will protect the top portion of the chimney against the elements.

Another object is to provide a chimney cap which will be simple and durable in form, efficient in operation and capable of being readily mounted on the chimney.

With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention resides in the novel construction and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings wherein:

Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my chimney cap mounted on a chimney.

Figure 2 is a plan view of the blank from which the cap is formed, this view being reduced in scale relative to Figure 1.

Referring now more particularly to the drawings, A designates the chimney ca 1 which is formed of an elongated blank 1 of suitable material such as galvanized steel, copper or the like. The blank 1 in forming the cap is bent along the corner bending lines 2 providing a rectangular box-like structure comprising the ends 3 and at and the sides 5 and 6. A lap or lip 7 is extended from the side 5 and is bent over upon the end 3 whereon it is secured by the bolts 8 which are passed through the apertures 9 in the lap 7 and the apertures 10 in the end 3 as shown. The corners of the cap A are slit downwardly for some distance as at 11 whereby the upper portions 12 of the ends 3 and 4 may be bent angularly inward between the sides 5 and 6. These upper portions 12 of the ends 3 and 4 are preferably of greater height than the sides 5 and 6 as shown in Figure 2, whereby the upper edges of the ends will lie flush with the upper edges of the sides when the'said upper end portions 12 are bent inward as aforesaid. The upper corners 13 of the sides 5 and 6 are bent along the bending lines 14: and lie upon the angularly and inwardly bent portions 12 of the ends 3 and 4 where they are secured by bolts 15 passed through the apertures 16' and 17 as shown. A spark catching screen or shield 18 of screen wire or similar material is secured over the opening in the cap by having its ends 19 passed downwardly within the sides 5 and 6 where they are secured by bolts 20 passed through the apertures 21. The screen 18 is arched upwardly and extends above the cap A whereby end openings 22 are provided to permit the ready passage of smoke.

In use the cap A is seated over the top of the chimney or flue B so that all smoke or other material emerging from the chimney must pass through the cap. The screen 18 is thus supported in such position that it will catch sparks and the like which rise from the chimney. The screen 18 and the inwardly turned portions 12- of the ends 3 and p 4 to a great extent prevent rain or snow from falling into the chimney and, in addition, the

converging end portions 12 increase the draft afforded by the chimney. The cap A as a whole also protects the chimney from the elements increasing its period of use. It will be readily understood that the cap may be made in various sizes to fit the chimney upon which it is used. The blanks from which the cap is formed may be readily formed up or bent into shape upon the job and the spark screen then mounted in place thus making the mounting of the cap very convenient.

While I have herein set forth a certain preferred embodiment of my invention it is understood that I may vary from the same in minor structural details so as best to construct a practical device for the purposes intended, not departing from the spirit of the invention and within the scope of the appended claim.

I claim:

In a device of the kind described, a rectangular cap comprising sides and ends, the said ends being bent angularly inward and upward at their upper margins and terminating flush with the upper margins of the sides, and a reticulated spark screen secured at its ends within the sides between the inturncd ends of the cap and arched upwardly across the cap.
