CLIP F033. SECURING SHEET-METAL PLATES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 25, 191?,
Application filed August 1, 1916. Serial No. 152,514.
To all wizmu it may concern lle it known that 1. WILLIAM G. Plvrnnus,
a subject of the Kingdom of Greece, and resident of Pittsburgh. in the count-y of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania. have invented a new and useful improvement in Clips for Securing Sheet-llletal Plates; and I do hereby declare the following to he a full. clear, and eXactdescription there-of.
My invention relates to clips for securing sheetzneial plates, and has special reference to the devices for attaching the metallic sheets rogether and in place for forming the oot. a
ilerctol ore. in the usual formation of these corrugated sheet metal roofs, the sheets were held in place on each side of their overlapping portions by means of sheet metal bands or strips, which are bent around and under the lower flange of the supporting channels or bars, while the ends of such hands are bent against the under faces of said sheets and such ends and sheets are riveted together beyond said overlapping portions. In this form a man on the roof and one underneath is required for connecting the sheets, and by reason ofche hands extending around the supporting bars it Was exceedingly diiiicult to paint the under side of the roof when required, by reason of such hands interfering thereivith.
The object of my invention is to overcome these objections and to provide a simple, cheap and etlicient form of a clip, which will enable the metal sheets forming a rool to be easily and quickly attached to the same, and one which will he supported and carried by the roof supports or channels generally employed, so as to be in position for being readily and conveniently held for connecting such sheets thereto.
To these ends my invention consists, generally stated, in the novel arrangement, combination and construction of parts, as hereinafter more specifically set, forth and described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
To enable others skilled in the art, to which my invention appcrt-ains, to construct and use my invention, 1 will describe the same more fully, referring to the accom panying (.rawing in which Figure 1 is cpl-an view, showing a portion of a roof having invention applied thereto;
Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail sectiona view, similar to Fig. 2, and showing a perl'ion of the roof; and
Fig. l is a perspective view of one of the clips employed.
Like symbols of reference herein indicate like parts in each of the figures of the dra lilg.
As illustrated in the drawing the roof is shown at a which is composed of the usual corrugated metal sheets 1, the vertically dis posed channels or supporting bars 2 for the same and the attaching clip 3, formed of metal strips for connecting the sheets 1 together for holding the same in place.
The clips 3 are of U-shaped form to pro-' vide for the is s 4. and 5 thereon, with the leg l longer an the leg 5 and rovidecl with a hole 6 within the same ad acent to the end of the short leg Within the hole 6 and carried by the same is a rivet or staple 7. which fits loosely within such hole by its shank 8 and is provided with the usual head 9 on the end of the shank adjacent to the end of the short leg 5. The opposite end of the shank S is slightly tapered outwardly at 10 to form a sufiicient head 11 thereon to hold the rivet or staple 7' lithin the leg 4 of the clip 3 and provide for the cutting edge 12 around the same for the purposes hereinafter described.
In constructing the roof as in accordance with my invention the supporting Tears or channels 2 are placed in position in the usual frame Work of'the building, and the clips 3 are placed around the upper flanges oi? the same, with the short legs 5 of such clips fitting under such flanges and the long legs i of the same resting on the upper faces of such flanges. When thus in position the clips 3 will be spaced the required distance apart from each other and the shanks 8 on the rivets or staples 7 carried by the some will be held extended or projected upwardly through the holes 6 in legs 4 by reason of the heads 9 on such staples being confined between such legs and the upper flanges on the channel bars 2, so that the headed ends 11 on such staples will he in position for attaching the. sheeis 1 together as hereinafter described.
The sheets 1 are positioned to overlap each other over the upper flanges on the channel bars 2 and are then driven down by hammering the same against the heads 11 on the staples 7 so that such heads will be of my improved sheet metal roof, the sheets.
can be firmly attached together and through their overlapping portions, and When so formed, there Will be no obstructions in the Way of painting the under side of the same, While in constructing such roof only the operator on the roof Will be required to connect the sheets together and thereby efi'ect a great saving in labor, as Well as also in the material of the device for connecting such sheets together. The attaching device being formed of a single unit can be easily shipped for installation on the roof, and being capable of being connected to and carried by the roof supporting bars will always be in position for instant and ready use,
a While it also can be used a number of times.
Various modifications and changes in the application, design, construction and combination of parts of my improved device may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
V hat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is As a new article of manufacture, a roofing clip comprising a metallic strip bent to form a hook portion and a shank portion, the shank portion being longer than the hook portion, said shank portion having a hole therein beyond the end of said hook portion, and a rivet disposed in the hole of said shank portion, said rivet having a head at one end, and being slightly headed at the other end, for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I, the said VVILLIAM G. PATRIDIS, have hereunto set my hand.
WILLIAM G. PATRIDIS.
