Description

G. B. MAGRUDER.
Cultivator.
Patented Oct 20. 1857.
N. PETERS, PHUTO-LVTHDGRAPHER. WASHINGTON. [1C- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIC G. B. MAGRUDER, OF THOMA SVILLE, GEORGIA.
IMPROVEM ENT .l N PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 18,463, dated October 20, 1857.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, O.- B. MAGRUDER, of Thomasville, county of Thomas, and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Flows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure l is a side view, and Fig. 2 is a pan view.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my'invention, I.will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In the construction of my invention I use any of the known materials for such purposes.
In Fig. 1, A is the beam; B, the handles; 0, the side beams; D, the adjusting polygonal plate; E, the foot, which is adjustable; D, the foot of the second shovel or share; I)", the foot of the first shovel; a, the belt for fastening the sliding arm of the second beam.
In Fig. 2, A is the beam; B, the handles; G,the side beams; O, the sliding arms passing through beam A, and which are adjusted by the bolts a; D, the adjustable polygonal plates; E, the foot with share on it; D the foot for the first shovel; b, the taps or nuts for tightening the screws.
In the operation of my invention the main beam A and center foot attached to it are so constructed that it may be used as a single plow. Then by means of the polygonal plates and adjusting sliding arm I can attach one, two, or more plows or shovels to the same stock, which is a matter of great importance to the planter, both in saving of expense and convenience. I
It will be seen that theside beams have an adjusting polygonal plate to give a larger bearin g-surface to it when bolted to the beam. This polygonal plate is attached to the side beam by a hinge which will accommodate itself to the main beam at any one of the sides corresponding with the distance, the side beam is removed from the main beam. The other end of the side beam is attached to a sliding arm which has holes in it, and which passes through the main beam and is held at any desired place by means of a bolt, a, that passes through it and the beam. It will be seen that by means of this device I can set my shovels at any desired distance from the main shovel, as they can be readily adjusted for the purpose of regulating the distance from it. By means of the arm 0, I can readily raise or lower the point of my plows, so that in cultivating, especially cotton, I can run one of the shares upon the row, and the second lower, and the third still lower, and thus cultivate the row without disturbing the shape of the bed, which is so important in growing cotton. These advantages I conceive are of great importance. By means of the adjusting side beams I can readily convert my invention into a single plow; or I can attach'two or three more plows to the same beam or plow-stock with two or three plowshares.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is- The polygonal plate D, in combination'with the arm 0 and beam A, in the manner and for the purposes set .forth.
0. B. MAGRUDER.
