Description

Jan. 26, 1932. T. w. DAHLQUIST HOT WATER BOILER Filed 001'.. lO. 1929 @wea/@@0370 @amy/fw 1 Patented dan.` 26, 1932 l f i onl'rsofsraes ATENT orties HTH'EODQRE w. `nAnterrestri oF `interrati,` Massecirusnr'rs `I-IO'I i WATER BOILER 'AAppli'cati'onfled October 10, 1929.` Serial No. 398,742.
Thisinvention relatest'o allot water boiler LUI of that type employing a gas `or like fuel burner located belowthe bottom of the boiler.
` The-invention has for its object to increase .theefficiency of hot waterboilers of the type referred to, wherebythe water therein may be more-economically and" quickly heated. i
' 'lothisenid5r the boiler is provided with an .exten'sionwhich projects beyond the bottom of the boiler, and said extension has co-op- `"erating withlit a tubular body which is of smaller diameter than said extension and` co-operates therewithandrwith the bottom of the boiler to form` a heating chamber, which is provided with arelatively large gas inlet formed by said tubular body7 and is provided with a smaller gas outletwhich is formed by the tubular body and said extension, said smaller gas out-let being located below the bottom of the boiler to cause the flow of gases to be reversed as they pass through the heating chamber and also to throttle the flow of the gasses out of the heating chamber and thereby cause the gases in the heating chamber to be maintained in contact with the bot-V tom of the-lboilerfor a substantiallength of time and thus more edectively and economically heat the water in the boiler.
The tubular body also forms a. combustion chamber within which is located a burner for gas, oil, or like fuel.` D
The tubular body may and preferably will be attachedto ,the boilereXtension and separated therefrom by spacing devices. i
The particular features of the invention will be pointed out in the claims at the end of this specification.
`Fig.`2, a section on the line2-2, Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings 10 represents a hot water boiler such as nowcoimnonly used in Akitchens of households and like places. The bo-iler 1() is provided with the` usual cylindrical shell or body portion 12 having Y at its upper end al head (not shown) and 'at its lower end a bottom 13. The bottom 13 is located within the lower end of the boiler shell 12 to provide the latter with a portion Fig. 1 represents one form of hot 'waterfCombustlorl t boiler embodying this invention,V andV 1t which extends below thebotitom 13 and l forms a skirt for the boiler. Y
In accordance with the present invention,
the `skirt.` or extension 14 of the boiler shell has co-operating with it atubular body 15, preferably of metal and cylindrical in shape and of smaller diameter than the skirt 14, which forms with the said skirt an annular passage 41G (see Fig. 2), which connectsthe space or chamber 17 with the atmosphere.
The chamber 17 forms a heating chamber v which is closed at its top and sides by the bottom 13 and skirt 14 of theboiler and is in open communication at its lower end with the tubular body and with the atmosphere.
Y The tubular body 15 forms a combustion chamber 20 in which is located a burner 21 for gas, oil, or like fuel, and said burner is provided with a fuelinlet pipe`22 which is'` connected with a suitable source of supply not shown. y Y
The tubular body 15 may be secured to the skirt 14 of the body by rivets 23 or other fas- Y toning devices and separated by spacing bushings 24; through.which-therivets 23 are passed in the construction herein shown.
The combustion chamber 2O may be closed i with suitable air inlets for supporting combustion, and the bottom plate 25 may beproidcd with holes 32 for this purpose.
`The boiler herein shown in provided with a cold water inlet pipe 33 fandwith a hot water outlet pipe 34 and also with a thermo- .static device 35 for automatically controlling the supply of gas or other fuel to the burner. The gas inlet pipe 22 is provided with a manually operated valve 36 and withVV an Aautomatic valve which is conventionally represented at 37 and which is controlled by the thermostatic device 35, which is also conventionally represented. These parts are well known and are in common use in hot Y water boilers and form no part of the present invention.
tion pass through the outlet In operation the products of combustion from the burner 21 flow upwardly fromthe combustion chamber 2O .into the heating chamber 17 wherein they contact with the bottom 13 of the boiler and their flow :isthen A reversed and they flow downward and pass through the outlet passage 16 .to-.the outside .of the boiler and then through the passage 30 to the atmosphere when the boiler is provided with the insulating Vjacket herein shown.' y
When the boiler is not provided with the insulating jacket, the products of combuspassage 16 directly into the atmosphere. Astheflow of the products of combustion are reversed in the'heating chamber and caused to flow downward therein to the outletv passageV V16 therefor, .the said kproducts of combustion are ,throttled or retarded in their passage ,out-v of the heating chamber,` inasmuch as the area of the outlet passage 16 is materially less than ,the area of the inlet for the heat-ing chamber, which inlet is formed by the tubular body 15.
vAs a result of this construction and arrangement, the products of combustion are yretained in contact with the bottom of the boiler or a greater length of time than would be the case if their iow was not reversed and throttled, and consequently a greater quantity of heat is transferred to the water in the boiler andi-the water therein is more quickly `and economically heated.
` It may be preferredto securedthetubular body 15'to the skirt or extension 14; of the boiler shell asfherein represented, but it is not desired to limit the invention in this respect, as'the tubular body may be 'Welded or otherwise attached at its lower endto the plate .and have its upper end disconnected from the skirt 14 ofthe boiler.
v having its upper end projecting into the saidy skirt and secured theretoran'd separated therefrom to forman outlet passage Jora heating .chamber'formed by said boiler bottom,V eX- tension and tubular sheet metal member, said outlet passage beinglocated suiciently near the bottom of the boiler to cause said tubular sheet metal member to direct the combustion gases against the bottom of the boiler prior to their escape through said outlet passage.
2. The combination With a hot water boiler having a body Aportion provided With a bottomand with avskirt lprojectingbelow said bottom, of a tubular body co-operating with saidskirtand Withithe bottom of the boiler to form a heating chamberhaving a substantially large gas inlet formed by the tubular body and a smaller gas outlet formed by the tubular bQtlyandfsaidlskirt, said tubular body having its upper' end arranged with relation to said skirttoobstructthe free .flow of gases from the combustion chamber .to the outsideof -the boiler andcausesaid gasesto flow upwardly .beyondsaid outlet .into said heating chamber and then downward .therelfrom through the vsmaller gas outlet ltothe outside of the boiler, whereby ,-tliezbottom ot the-boiler is subjected=to1theaction of amaximum-quantityof hot gases movingthrough theheating chamber in contact With the bottom oftheboiler before passing through said gas outlet.
.In testimony whereof, .1I lhave Vsigned my lname to .this specifica-tion.
