WATER-HEATER.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN G. HAUS, a citizen of the United States,residing at WVeirton, in the county of Hancock and State of West Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in W'ater-Heaters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to water heaters, particularly to that type used in connection with the ordinary household boiler and using illuminating gas as a fuel, and has for its object the provision of awater heater which is so constructed as to heat water very rapidly and economically and which is so constructed that the water of condensation chamber cannot drop down onto the gas burner and result in corroding it.
An additional object is the provision of a device of this character which is so constructed as to practically avoid machining the parts, the device being formed of castings secured together in spaced relation and so connected as to provide a water-tight structure.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my device associated with an ordinary domestic boiler,

Referring more particularly to the drawings, the letter A designates a domestic water boiler or hot water storage tank of conventional design which has the outlet pipe B for hot water and water supply pipe C. The letter D designates the water inlet pipe which is provided with the usual drain cock E and it is between the pipes B and D that the usual water heater is interposed.
In carrying out my invention I provide a water heater designated broadly by the letter F and this heater comprises inner and outer shells 10 and 11 each of which is formed as a single iron casting. The inner shell 10 is formed at its upper end with a tubular downward extension 12 and is formed at its lower end with an outwardly extending annular flange 13 provided in its upper face Specification of Letters Patent.

The outer shell 11 is of greater diameter than the inner, shell 10 and is formed at its upper end with an upwardly extending tubular extension 16 which has its bore registering with the bore of the extension 12 and upon which is adapted to be engaged a suitable pipe or stackG leading to the chimney flue in the ordinary manner. The outer shell 11 is also formed at its upper end with a nipple 17 which is inwardly threaded for engagement therein of a pipe 18 connected with the pipe B. At one side, adjacent the lower portion the outer shell is formed with aninternally threaded nipple 19 for engagement of a pipe 20 connected with the pipe D. At its lower end the outer shell is formed with an annular horizontal flange 21 provided with'bolt holes 22 registering with the bolt holes 15 for the reception of bolts 23 for securing the inner and outer shells together. The underside of the flange 22 is formed with a groove 241 mating with the groove 141 and disposed within these grooves is an annular gasket 25 formed of lead. A similar gasket 25 is disposed between the shells at their upper ends in con centric relation to the extensions 12 and 16.
Disposed beneath the superposed shells is a transversely extending bracket 26 which has angular end portions 27 provided with holes receiving opposite ones of the bolts 23 for holding the bracket in position and this bracket carries a Bunsen burner 28 of any well known or preferred type, to which is connected the usual gas inlet pipe 29.
In the operation of the device it will be seen that when the parts are assembled as above described, the space between the inner and outer shells will be filled with water. When the burner 28 is lighted the flames thereof will rise within the inner shell and play against the same whereby heating the the water, as it is heated, will pass out through the nipple 17 and through the pipe 18 to the pipe B and thence to the boiler. The cold water Within the boiler will pass through the pipe D and pipe 20 through the nipple 19 into the space between the shells and this circulat1on will be continuous as long as the burner is in operation. Any water of condensation formed within the inner shell 10 will of course travel along the inner wall thereof and will pass down through the bottom of greater height and the device instead burner.
From the foregoing description and a study of the drawings it will be apparent that I have thus provided a simply conof dripping onto the structed and highly efficient water heater the right to make such changes in the form,
construction, and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
l. A water heater comprising an outer shell provided in its upper portion at one side with an' outlet nipple for connection of an outlet pipe, said outer shell being formed at one side in its lower portion with a nipple for connection of an inlet pipe, an inner shell disposed within and spaced from said outer shell whereby to provide an annular water chamber, a transverse bracket secured beneath said superposed shell, a burner carried by said bracket, said outer shell being formed centrally of its top with a tubular upward extension and the inner shell being provided with a tubular downward extension registering with'the first named extension, and means cutting as communicationbetween said chamber and the bores of said extensions.
2. A water heater comprising a substanside of its top with an outlet nipple for connection of a pipe, the outer. shell being further provided at its lower portion in the opposite side with an inlet nipple for connection of a pipe, an innershell of less diameter and height than the outer shell and having its lower end formed with an outwardly extending flange having its upper face formed with a circumferential groove mating with said first named groove, a soft metal gasket within said grooves, and'a burner supported beneath and extending into the inner shell.
