PIPE
Filed March 12, 1927 ATTORNEY Patented Nov. 26, 1929 UNHTED STATES PATENT OFFICE PIPE Application filed March 12, 1927. Serial No. 174,837.
10 which burns the tongue of the smoker, the
said trap also providing a cooling chamber for the smoke before the same reaches the mouth of the user and likewise providing a means for trapping any oil or moisture that may exist in the tobacco.
A further object is the provision of a smokers article having a trap therein for this purpose whlch is of a simple construction, may be easily cleaned, and which is i thoroughly efficient for its purpose.
To the attainment of the foregoing and other objects which will present themselves as the nature of the invention is better understood, the improvement also resides in certain other novel features of construction,
combination and operative association of parts, one satisfactory embodiment of which is disclosed by the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings:
34) Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improvement as applied to a smokers pipe.
Figure 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view through that portion of the stem provided with the improvement.
Figure 3 is an inverted plan view of the cap.
Figure 4 is a plan view of the stem with the cap removed.
l/Vhile in the showing of the drawings I 49 have disclosed my invention in connection with a smokers pipe, it is to be understood that the same may be arranged on or formed with the stem of either a cigar holder or a cigarette holder. The stem of my improvement is indicated by the numeral 1, the same having a smoke passage 2 leading from the tobacco end of the pipe, cigar or cigarette holder. The stem 1 is formed on its top with a. threaded boss 3, and the boss is cen- 53 trally formed with a nipple extension 4 whose bore communicates with the smoke passage 2. The smoke passage from the mouth piece of the stem is indicated by the numeral 5, the same merging into an angle branch which passes through the boss 3.
Adjustably arranged over the nipple 4 there is a basin 6. In the showing of the drawings, this basin frictionally engages with the nipple but, of course, the same may be threaded thereon.
Screwed on the boss 3 there is the cap member 7 of the improvement. The cap has its top, on its inner face, thickened and the said thickened portion is dished, as at 8, and the said dished portion is arranged cent-rally and directly over the stem 1. The dished portion 6 provides a deflector.
The stem for a smokers article provided with a trap as above disclosed and with smoke passages leading to the trap effectively prevents the passage of saliva from the smokers mouth into the bowl of a pipe or into the cigar or cigarette pocket in a cigar or cigarette holder. This prevents a hot or steamy vapor entering the mouth of the smoker. The smoke from the tobacco is directed through the nipple 4 and will contact with the deflector 8, so that the smoke is thus directed downwardly onto the basin and, thereby effectively cooled before passing through the passage 5. Moisture or oil from the tobacco will be received in the basin 6 as will any other substance, such as crumbs of tobacco and the sticky substance created by the smoking of tobacco and commonly referred to as nicotine.
The simplicity and advantages of the invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art to which such invention relates, but obviously I do not wish to be restricted to the precise details herein set forth, and, therefore, hold myself entitled p to such changes therefrom as fairly fall within the scope of what I claim.
Having described the invention, I claim A stem for a smokers pipe, cigar or cigarette holder, having a smoke passage leading from the tobacco holder, an upstanding nipple on the stem whose port communicates with the said passage, a boss on the stem surrounding the nipple, said stem having a second smoke passage leading from the mouth piece thereof and communicating with the boss, a basin removably and adjustably secured on the nipple, a cap member screwed on the boss, said cap member having its top thickened inwardly and concaved to provide a smoke deflector which is arranged over the end of the nipple and disposed opposite the basin on the nipple.
In testimony whereof I afix my signature.
HARRISON ELLSWORTH BATCHELDER.
