IMPROVEM ENT IN STAFFING DEVICES FOR MILLSTONES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [73,550, dated February 15, 1876; application filed J uly 17, 1875.
To all whomit may concern: I
Be it known that I, DAVID LEIB, of Rich Hill, in the county of Knoxand State ofOhio,
' have invented a new and Improved Staffing Device for Millstones, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a top view of my improved millstone-staffing attachment; and Figs. 2 and 3,
' vertical central sections of the same, showing runner and bedand provided with horizontal spring-stand ards, that carry at their mortised front ends the bearers of the red-staff, that is adjusted by set-screws to the surface of the stones.
A in the drawing represents the supportingp'late of my improved millstone-stafiing attachment, which plate is provided with handles at opposite ends, to place the device readily into position, onthe stones.
Plate A has a central perforation, a, that fits on the spindle B and holes b, at equal distance therefrom, that correspond to guide-pins b of the driver (J, keyed to spindle B.
When the staffing device is placed on the bed-stone the supporting-plate is secured on the threaded pins by fastening thumb-nuts d, and revolved by the turning of the spindle. When the device is used for stalling the runner the plate A isattached to an intermediate shell or cylindrical part,D,by means of guidepins b, that enter holes in the plate A. The part D fits loosely into a recess-in the runner, and is revolved with its attached parts by taking hold of the handles.
Plate A carries parallel horizontal springstandards E, that are fastened at one end and extended with their free ends beyond the circumference of the supporting-plate, carrying vertically recessed or mortised extensions 0, in which the bearing-standards f of the redstaff F slide, being adjusted to any height by set-screws f. When the red-staff is fastened by the thumb-screws f, the final adjustment is made by set-screws of the spring-standards, that secure the rigid position of the staff. When the red-staff rests level on the face of the stone, a small thin piece of paper is placed under each end, so as not to allow the statfto mark any part of the face of the stone before it is properly adjusted by the screws of the spring-standards. The higher parts are then marked off and dressed, which is repeated until the staff colors the entire face of the stone. When both bed stone and runner are stafl'ed perfectly true, the runner is placed back on the spindle, being set true" thereon, and then runin perfect tram.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A staffing device for millstoncs, composed of supporting-plate, with parallel adjustable spring-stamlards, carrying lateral markingstaff attached thereto, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the supporting-plate, having guide-holes equidistant from the center, with the threaded guide-pins of the runner or bed-stone attachment, and with binding thumb-screws, to attach device for staffing either-runner or bed-stone, substantially as described.
