Be it known that I, CHARLES RoLLIN BRATNARD, of Boston, in the'county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in :Oopy- Holders, of which the following isa description sufficiently-full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is an isometrical perspective view. My present invention is designed as an improvement upon the device described in the Letters Patent of the United States granted to me on the: 3lst day of- March, 1874, and numbered 149,092, and upon the device shown in my pending application for Letters Patent of the United States filedNovember 15, 1875; and consists in a novel construction and arrangement of the parts, as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed, by which an important advantage is attained over either of said devices, or any other copy-holder now in use, of which I have any knowledge.

The nature and operation of my invention will be readily obvious to all conversant with such matters from the following description 1n the drawing, A is a base or socket, which may be attached to the galley-stand, or secured in any convenient position with reference thereto, by screws or nails inserted in the holes kit. A rod or holder, B, provided with the point a, is secured in the socket, and fitted upon this holder there is a slide, 0, endered adjustable both vertically and hori-, zontally by means of the set-screw G. This slide carries a spur or auxiliary spindle, D, which is preferably inclined in an upward direction, the better to hold the copy F.

In said Letters Patent a series of verticallyarranged pins are shown, which are denominated therein as copy-holders, and which correspond with the holder B in Fig. 1, and

in said pending application a copy-holder is shown having a series of radial arms, carrymg spurs, and supported on a staff or rod, denominated therein 0, which staff also corresponds with the spindle B in my present 21.17--

In the use of this independent spur, in con- I nection with the spindle or holder denominated copy-holder in said patent, it forms the device shown in Fig; l, and when used. in

connection with the staff or rod denominated U in said pending application, it is placed below the radial arms or said rod, and adjusted in any desirable position.

- It will be obvious, however, that the point a may be omitted, and also the means of rendering the spur adjustable, without entirely departing from the spirit of. my invention.

What I claim is- As a new article of manufacture a copyholder, consisting of the standard B, provided with a sliding block, 0, having the 'spur D, as set forth. CHAS. ROLLIN BRAINARD.
