SCHICK SAFETY RAZOR Filed March 17, 1927 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 the shaving head is mounted on the handle Patented Oct. l, 1929 UNITED PTENT OFFICE JACOB SCHICK, OF STANFORD, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO MYAGAZINE REPEATING RAZOR COMPANY, A CORPORATION 0F NEW JERSEY SAFETY RAZOR Application led March 17, 1927. Serial No. 176,002.
-- This invention relates to an improved safety razor of the type in which blades are successively fed from a stack, the stack being mounted in a handle of the razor and so that it will receive a blade when it is in one position and is disposed on the handle to be convenient for shaving when inl another position. The advantages of this construction are that it can beeasily made and is economical in manufacture, it can be quick-l lyreloaded and the means for withdrawing the clip-'receiving element requires the removal of none of the parts of the blade feeding means as independent units but are all removable at the same time.
The construction includes a slide for ejecting blades and a holder for a clip of blades, these being secured together for removal as a unit from the handle so that the clip-receiving member can be loadedfrom the front, or rather, the top, and all the parts inserted together in the handle.
The invention also includes a lock which when moved in-` one direction locks the clipholder in place and leaves the blade ejecting .slide free to move, being limited in its movement by the clip holder, but the latch 23 when moved in the opposite direction locks the blade ejecting slide tothe clip' holding member but releases the clip-holding member from the handle.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a front view of the improved razor. Figure 2 is a similar View with the shaving head swung transversely up at the handle and the parts being shown mainly in section. Figure 3 is a similar view with the slide being retreated to pick up a blade for feeding it to the shaving hea'd. Figure 4 is a section illustrating the latch moved to release the clipholder from the handle. Figure 5 shows the parts being removed from the handle after such release. Figure 6 is a section on line 6- in Figure 2. Figure7 is a section 'on line 7 in Figure 2. Figures 8 and 9 are a side view'i' and "a back view of the razor shown in l of the clip-holder and the slide removed from the handle and Figure 12 is a View of the clip containinga stack of blades, the stack being partly broken away.
The handle 10 is vmade of square tubing and has -the post 11 which supports, on the pivot 12, the shaving head 13. The shaving head when swung down as in Figure 1 receives a blade endwise from the handle and when swung to lateral position is ready for shaving. rlhe blade is received on the platform 14 and is held by the spring 15 and the blade, shown at 16, is arranged with its edge directly behind the guard or fender 17. The post 11 has a base 18 which is secured in one end of the handle 10 and closes that end except for the slit 19 for the passage of a blade.
The inside elements of the razor are the clip holder 20 which has side walls 21 and a bottom 22, the top being open. The other element is a slide 23 with side walls 24 and a slide piece 'or top 25. rl`he 4front end 26 is used for pushing a blade from a stack of blades in the handle. The blades are usually placed in a clip 27, the stack 28 being fed out of the top and then formed by the slide The slide 23 is limited in its movement by the projection 29 punched in the side walls and sliding in slots 30 in the Aclip holder 20.
On the under side of the clip holder is a sprin 31 usually pivoted thereto as at 32 the pivot being securedv to the side walls 21v directly within the block 33 to which the rest of the, clip holder is secured as by screw 34.
rlhe block 33 has a hole drilled through it and a bolt 35 slides in this hole. It is slid by a finger piece 36 on the end of the grip 37 of the slide 23 through the medium of the'pin 38.v When slid in one direction, as in Figure 2, it locks the clip holder to the handle as it enters the hole 39 in the wall of the handle. The other end of the bolt is released from'a recess or hole 40 on the slide 23, usually on the grip 37. This allows lthe slide to be'moved and locks the clip holder to the handle. The slidecan thus. be used` to propel blades, one at a time, from the stack 28 to the shaving head and is the means for replacing blades when dull.
vWhen the fingerl piece is slid the other way the bolt 35 moves so that one end is out of the hole 39 and the other end enters the hole 40 as shown in Figure 4. Now, when the grip 37 is pulled out not only the slide comes out but the clip holder with it and are held 'assembled as in Figure 4. The clip is removed and thrown away and a new clip is pushed in from the front, that is over the spring 31 between the side walls and under the top `plate of the slide. It should be explained that the parts are shown in `Figure 11 slid apart for'better illustration but in practice they would be closed, that is, the holder 20 would be within the slide 23 and the clip 27 is slid in endwise as shown by the arrow next to the dotted outline of the end of the clip.
After the clip is in the holder the parts are held by the thumb and linger .to keep the spring 31 inside the holder and the said parts then slid into the handle. When they are all the way in the latch is slid to the position shown-in Figure 2 and the razor is then ready for use as soon as the slide 23 is operated once to push a blade from the stack in the clip through slit 19 into the shaving head.
Connection between the bolt 35 and the pin 38 is such as to permit their separation when the slide is pulled out without the holder and I illustrate in the drawing a pair of small studs 41 between which the end of the pin 38 can be seated.
Various changes can be made in the several parts without departing from the scope of the invention.
I claim:
1. A safety razor comprising a handle with a recess therein, a shaving head lon the handle and adapted to receive blades from the handle, a clip receiving member slidable in the recess, 'a blade ejecting slide slidable' inthe recess and a latch disposed to lock the clip holder in the handle when slid in one direction and to release the clip holder from the handle and to lock the slide to the clip holder when slid in the other` direction.
2. A safety razor comprising a handle with a recess therein, a clip holder slidable in the recess, a slide slidable in the recess and a latch for alternately locking the clip holder to the handle at the same time releasing the slide and locking the slide to the clip holder and at the same time releasing the clip holder from the handle.
3. A safety razor comprising a handle with a recess therein, a clip holder slidable in the handle, a slide slidable in the recess, a bolt the recess, a blade ejecting slide slidable in the recess and a latch disposed to lock the clip holder in the handle when slid in one direction and to release the clip holder, from the handle and to lock the slide to the clip holder when slid in the other direction, the cli receiving member having an open front en whereby a clip may be slid into the member and under the slide from the front.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
