UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARCUS D. STRAIT, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN HEEL-SUPPORTS FOR B OOTS AND SHOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 172,203, dated J 'anuary 11 1876; application filed December 15, 1875.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I,- MARCUS D. STRAIT, of St. Louis, in the county of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brace for Boots and Shoes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference hein g had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in braces for preventing boots and shoes from running over; and it consists in a metallic plate having an irregular-shaped head, a rib down its center, and a concave flanged end for applying to boots and shoes, as will be more fully described hereafter.-
The accompanying drawings represent my invention.
a represents a metallic plate, of suitable length and width, that is to be applied to the side or back of the heel of a boot or shoe to prevent or stop it from running over. The head 0 of this plate, that reaches up above the top of the heel and bears against the counter, is made of an irregular shape, so that any desired portion of it may be bent to support any part desired of the counter without bending the other part of the head. Extending down the center of the plate to the screw-hole d,
through which passes the screw tofasten the plate in position, is a rib or flange, e, which serves both to strengthen the plate and to allow one-half to be bent without disturbing the other. The lower end of the plate is 'side, so as to correspond.:with the shape of the heel. A nail is driven through the hole 0. These braces will be stamped or otherwise made from malleable iron-,i so as to be readily bent into such a shape as tobest support the boot or shoe to which it is applied.
I am aware that a castiron brace has been made which has a round flat head, but which cannot be bent so as to be adapted .to the shape of the bootor shoe to which it is ap plied, and this I broadly disclaim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- The metallic plate a, having an irregularshaped head, a, the rib c, and flanged end '11, adapted to be bent to conform to the shape of the counter, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 29th day of November, 1875.
MARCUS D. STRAIT. Witnesses:
