UNITED lSTATES PATENT OFFICE.
' STANLEY l G.
WISE, F DAYTON, OHIO, ASSIGNOB T0 THE GEBHART FOLDING BOX COMPANY, 0F DAYTON, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
FOLDING BOX.
Application led June 21, 1926. Serial No. 117,336.
My invention relates to folding boxes and in particular to a box which, when unfolded, will assume an unfolded condition with the end walls and side walls of equal height.
e Heretofore, it has been regarded as im.-
possible and as being unknown in the trade to have a box which may be moved from a partially folded condition in fiat sha e to a fully folded and assembled condit1on, in 1o which the side walls of the box are of the same height as the end walls.
lt is my object to provide a box which may be ship ed in semi-folded condition in dat form and which can be easily assembled le into fully assembled condition by simple movements of any unskilled person.
Feferring to the drawings:
Figure l is a plan view of the to of the box in semi-folded condition ready or shipment in its dat form;
Figure 2 is a similar view showing the side wall Haps in unfolded position for the purpose of illustration;
Figure 3 is a section on at Figure l;
Figure Il is a side elevation of the box just as it is being assembled into its fully unfolded and assembled condition;
Figure 5 is a section on the line 5--5 of Figure l; Figure 6 is a side elevation of the box in fully assembled and unfolded condition;
Fig. l is a view of the blank;
Fig. e is a perspective view of assembled expanded position.
Referring to the designates the bottom of the box which is provided with end walls 2 and 3 and side walls l and 5.. The end walls are turned over at their outer ends into flaps 6. The end the line 3-3 of the box in walls are turned over at their sides so that there is an overlapping side liap 7, which lies beneath the end flap 6. Staples 8 are placed therethrough. There are similar overlapping side flaps 7 which overlap each otherat their inner corners 7a. .These side flaps are connected integrally with intermediate Haps 9 which are substantially triangular inshape. These intermediate .flaps are plonnected to theside iaps 7 along a score inge a onal edges 11 which form the second side gle while the third or vertical o the trian side of the triangle is formed by .the score l2 te along which line the intermediate iap is drawings in detail, .l
joined to the respective side walls 4 or 5. The side walls or 5 are formed with an inwardly folding side wall flap i3 which is folded along the scored line le which proceeds parallel to the top edge 15 of the side wall crossing the scores l2 and across the upper parts of the intermediate flaps, terminating at the edges 11 of the intermediate naps. Thus, the side wall flap and the top of the intermediate flaps are ada ted to fold inwardl This permits of the side walls being folde as usual, but, when in unfolded condition permits of their full vexpansion and the side walls being of the same height as the end walls and the bottom width. .When the box is expanded and opened up into its folded form to make a box complete, it will be noted that the overlapping intermediate naps gradually assume a vertical position parallel to the inside of the endwalls 2 and 3, while the side walls assume a vertical position and the daps are unfolded, as in Figure 5 and Figure 6.
lt will be understood that I desire to comprehend within my invention such modifications as may be necessary to adapt it to varying conditions and uses.
llavin thus fully described my invention, what l c aim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. ln a collapsible box adapted to be erranged in semi-folded'at form and to be moved from that form into fully assembled form, the combination of a bottom, end walls and side walls, said end walls and side walls when in fully assembled form being of the same height, equal to the width of the bottom, said side walls being folded upon themselves when the box is in collapsed condition.
Q. In combination in a box, of a bottom, end walls and side walls, said side walls when in collapsed condition having upper portions folded upon each other and so arranged that the box may be assembled in flat form and may be automatically unfolded from the assembled flat form to the assembled set-up condition with the side walls and end walls of the same height, equal d to the width of the bottom. l0., They are provided with free di- 3. In combination in a box, a bottom, end walls and side walls, side aps attached to the end walls and intermediate a s connected to the side walls and to the si e flaps, said side walls being creased and the outer portions folded back onto the main portions thereof when the box is arranged in semifolded fiat form.
4. In combination in a box of a bottom portion, end Wall portions, end liaps on the end wall portions, side Wall portions composed of main side wall portions, intermediate liap portions and side flap portions, said side `flap portions being adapted to fold over each otherbeneath the end aps of the end walls, means to fasten said end aps to the side aps and end walls, said parts being so arran ed that they may be folded in a collapse position flat and moved from the collapsed position to a full expanded osition with the intermediate aps paralle to the end Wall portions and at right angles to the main side wall portions, said side Walls having portions ada tedto be folded when the box is in semi-folded collapsed position and extended in line with the main side Wall portions When the box is in expanded position, the height of the end walls and side walls being equal to the width of the bottom.
5. In combination ina box adapted to be arranged in fiat form in semi-assembled condition and moved from thatcondition to fully assembled condition automatically, a box blank having an integral bottom, hinged end walls, end aps hinged on the end Walls, hinged side walls consisting of main side wal ortions, intermediate flap portions and side ap portions so arranged that when the box is 1n semi-folded flat condition the side flaps and side wall portions will be folded parallel to the bottom and end wall portions, the side flaps will be overlapping and the end aps overlapping the side flaps, While the intermediate flaps Will overlap each other and the outer portions of the main side wall portions overlap each other, said main side wall portions having inwardly turned flaps along the upper edges adapted to be inwardly folded when the box is in flat condition and when said box is moved to an o en condition, the main side Wall flaps Wi l be extended to form parts of the side Walls.
6. In a one piece box, la blank having a bottom portion, end wall portions hinged thereto, end lap portions hinged to the end Wall portions, side Hap portions hinged to the sides of the end Wall portions and hinged on their inner edges diagonally to intermediate aps, intermediate iaps substantially triangular in shape having a free edge, main side Wall portions having sides thereof hinged to the adjacent intermediate flaps and the bottom thereof hinged to the bottom portion of the blank, said intermediate por'tlons and main side wall portions being creased parallel to the hinged line of the main side Wall portion with the bottom portion to form a flap which is folded back against the intermediate and main side wall portions when the'box is partially folded for shipment and extended when the box is set up ready for use.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
