UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARTIN S. KARPEN, OF MICHIGAN CITY, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO S. KARPEN & BROS., 0F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION 0F WEST VIRGINIA.
TABLE.
Application filed July 24,
This invention relates to improvements in tables and more especially to an extension gate-leg ldrop leaf table.
Among the features of my invention is the provision of such a table which is not split or divided in the center, but which nevertheless can be extended or lengthened. The table is provided with a drop leaf at each end supported when raised by a gate or swinging leg. The swinging legs can be used either when the table is extended or closed. When to be extended, the break or division in the table is made at the juncture of the dro leaf with the center portion of the table, t-iius eliminating any extra division in the top of the table and leaving the entire center' portion of the table one solid piece without any division line or crack. The table can be extended at either or both ends.
Another feature of the invention is the provision of' space in the table itself for storing or housing the extra leaves or boards when not in use, thus protecting them from dust and dispensing with the annoyance of having to find other storage space. e
Another feature of the invention is the provision of improved guides and slides, a portion of the guide being formed of a metal plate, thus making the guide more rigid and giving truer and freer action to the slide carried thereby.
Another feature of the invention is the provision 'of simple, effective, and easily operated locking means for securely holding the slides in any desired position.
Other features and advantages of my invention will appear more fully as I proceed with my specification.
In that form of device embodying the features of m invention, shown in the accompanying rawings, Fig. 1 is a top plan view of a table with one half of the top removed, showing the table extended at both ends, Fig. 2 is a view taken as indicated by the line 2 of Fig. l showing the table extended at only one end, Fig. 3 is a view taken as indicated by the line 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a view in side elevation, showing the table closed at both ends, Fig. 5 is a View taken as indicated by the line 5 of Fig. 2, Fig. 6
'is a bottom plan View of one of the extra boards or leaves, Fig. 7 is a View taken as indicated by the line 7 of Fig. 1, Fig. 8 is a view taken as indicated by the line 8 of Fig. 8, Fig. 9 il a view taken. as indicated 1926. Serial No. 124,630.
by the line 9 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 10 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view showing the hinge connection of one of the drop leaves, and also showing one of the gate-legs in closed position.
As shown in the drawings, the table comprises a center stationary top portion l0, supported upon a suitable rectangular frame l1 carried by four center or permanent legs 12, 12. 13, 13 indicate suitable horizontal braces near the bottoms of the legs i2, 12.
Since the construction and operation of the table at both ends is similar, and each end is independent of the-other, I will describe in detail but one end. Attached to the underside of the center portion 10 are two parallel longitudinally arranged bars, 111, 14, each having mounted on both sides two metallic guide or slide members 15, 15. The center portion of each bar 14 is thickened where the guides 15 are attached and the guides 15 are wider than such thickened portion in order to provide an overhang (see Fig. 3). Slidably mounted on each of the guides 15 is a wooden extension slide 16. The two slides 16, 16 shown in Fig. 3, each lying on the right hand side (as viewed in Fig. 3) of the bar 14 are joined at their outer ends by a connecting bar or strip 17, thus forming an extension U-shaped frame or drawer slidably mounted on the guides 15, 15. It is to be understood that each of the slides 16 is provided with two overlapping flanges lying under the overhanging edges of the strip 15, so that the slide 16 is firmly held in place on the guide except for sliding movement thereon. To the underside of the U-shaped frame or drawer formed by the two slides 16, 16, with the connecting bar or strip 17, there is attached a thin board 18, thus forming a bottom for the drawer just referred to. It is to be understood, that at the other end of the table there is a similar U-shaped extension frame or drawer, the slides of the same being similarly mounted on the guides 15, 15, lying on the left side as viewed in Fig. of the bars 14, 14. Suitable notches are provided in the cross members 11, 1l to accommodate the slides 16, 16.
To the outer side of the bar 17 there is hingedly attached the drop-leaf 19, by means of the hinges 20. 21 indicates a gate or swinging suppcrted by the upper' and lower cross membejs` Q2 and 23 respectively having their inner ends hinged to the members il and 13 respectively and joined by the vertical post member 2F'. Then the drop-leaf I9 is down, the gate-leg 2l. is swung' into position between the two legs l2, l2, at one end, as shown in Fig. 10. The upper end oi the 21 is cut away as indicated at 2d to form a recess for the cross member 11 when the gate-leg is swung in and its lower end is provided with a similar cut-away portion or recess to accommodate the cross member 18. The part 13 is provided with a cooperating recess or cutaway portion 27, so that when the gate-leg 21 .is closed it will lie substantially in line with the two end legs l2, l2.
W`hen the drop-leaf I9 is up, the gate-leg 2l is swung outwardly to support the same, there being` provided preferably on the under side oit said drop-leaf a short pin 28 adapted to engage in a suitable socket in the upper end of the gate-leg 2l. There are preferably provided on the underside of each drop-leaf two of such pinsdone `to accommodate the gate-leg when such end of the table is extended and the other for use when it is closed.
Vhen either end of the table is to be extended, the U-shaped frame or drawer7 is pulled out on the slides 15 and an extra board as indicated by 29 is laid in place. The extra board or leaf as shown in Fig.v G is preferably hinged in the center by hinges on the underside so that it may be folded together, as shown on the right hand side in Fig. 2 and stored or housed in the drawer under the top l() when such drawer is closed.
Each pair oi slides IG is adapted to be locked in anv desired position by means et' the two cams 230, 30, hinged to the cross meni-V ber ll. and provided with depending arms coniuufted by the bail Si., provided at one end with an merating handle or knob Endwise movement oi the bar 3l in one direction rocks the cams 30, SO, to clamp the slides 16 against the top portion 10 to hold the same Iirmly in position.
While I hare shown and described certain embodiments ol my invention, it is to be understood that it is capable ot many modifications. Changes, tl'ieretore, in the construction and arrangement may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as disclosed in the appended claims, in which it my intention to claim all novelty inherent in my invention as broadly as possible in view of the prior art.
Vhat I claim is new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. In a table of the character described, a main and secondary section slidably interconnected, said main section including a stationary top leaf and the secondary section including a hinged leaf, and means securec to the main section for supporting the leal of the secondary section when in horizontal raised position said means consisting of a gate leg` hinged to the adjacent side ot the main section for outward swinging position beneath the leaf of the secondary section when in horizontal raised position.
2. In a table of the character described, a central main stationary section and a pair ot secondary side sections mounted for outward slidingl movement with respect to the main section, said main section including a stationary top lea'tl and the secondary sections including hinged leaves, means secured to the sides oi the main sections for supporting the leaves of the secondary sections when in horizontal raised position, and insert eaves arranged between the adjacent edges of the stationary leaves and the hinged leaves.
3. In a table of Ithe character described,
a .central main stationary section and pair,
of secondary side sections mounted for outward sliding movement with respecit to the main section, said main section including a stationary top leaf and the secondary sections including hinged leaves, means secured to the sides oi the main sections for supporting the leaves oit the secondary sections when in horizontal. raised position, said means in (finding hinged legs secured to the sides ot the main section for outward swinntincr position beneath the hinged leaves of the secondary section, and insert leaves arranged between the adjacent edges of the stationary leaves and the hinged leaves.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 16th day of July, A. D. 1926.
MARTIN S. KARPEN.
