roLnABLE TA LE,
. Application filed July 1,
This invention relates to foldable tables.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved foldable table having legsconnected with the top of the'table by hinges, and movable from folded positions against the under sideof the top of the table to upright supporting positions, in combination with elements for holding the legs in upright supporting positions and in folded position, and retaining devices for holding said elements in the adjustments required to retain the legs in said positions.
Other objects will appear from the following description, reference being made to the drawing in which Fig. 1 is a side elevation of my improved table.
Fig. 2 is an inverted plan view showing two legs folded against the under side of the table top, and two legs adjusted in position to support the table top.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional View on V the line 33 of Fig. 2.
The top 1 of thetable has a transverse strip 2 rigidly connected with the under side thereof near each end and terminating inwardly from the side edges of the table top. Transverse and longitudinal strips 3 functioning as reinforcing valances are secured to the under side of the table top, those crossing the ends being against the outer side edges of the strips 2 and those along the sides extending across the ends of the strips 2.
Astrip 4 is connected to the'inner' edge of each of the strips 2 by hinges 5 designed and arranged to permit the strips 4 to be folded flat against the under side of the table top with their side edges adjacent to the side edges of the strips 2; or turned downwardly to vertical positions, as desired. A pair of legs 6 are attached to the lower outer sides of each of the strips 4, one of the legs at one end of the table being against the adjacent side valance 3 and the diagonally opposite leg at the opposite end of the table being against the other side valance 3. The legs are constructed so that when they are in vertical position the upper ends of the legs abut squarely against the strips 2, thus rigidder side of the table top. A holding member 8 is connected to each side edge of the strip 7 by a hinge 9, said members 8 being arranged in such relationship to the strips 4 that abut against the inner sides 1925. Serial No. 40,773.
when said stri s 4 are flat against the under side of the ta le top the outer ends of the members 8 extend under the inner edges of said strips 4; and when the strips 4 are in vertical planes with the table legs in supporting position the ends of the members 8 of the strips 4 near the lower edges of the latter.
Elongated buttons 1O are pivoted to the lower side edges of the strips 4 and are capable of being turned to longitudinal positions to permit said strips 4 to befolded flat against the under side of the table top, or to be turned to transverse positions to support the outer ends of the members 8 when the table legs are vertical. When the table legs are folded the outer ends of the members 8 are supported firmly against the under sides of the strips 4 by buttons 11,
pivoted to the strips 2 and capable of being turned transversely to permit the strips 4 to turn downwardly and also: capable of being turned inwardly under the ends of the members 8. Thus the members 8 are retaining members for rigidly holding the table legs vertically and firmly holding the table legs against the under side of the table top structure.
A foldable table of this improved construction possesses the desirable characteristics of rigidity and convenience in handling, and obtains all of its intended objects in an entirely satisfactory manner.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination in a table, of a top, a pair of transverse strips attached to the under-face of the top adjacent to each end thereof, a second pair of transverse strips associated with said first named pair of transverse strips and having the same thickness therewith, hinges connecting the underfaces of each pair of strips, table legs connected. with said second named strips, a pair of supportingmembers hinged at their inner ends arranged to engage the vertical faces of said second named strips when the table legs are extended, and a retaining device pivoted to the free edge of substantially each of said second named strips arranged to support said retaining members when the table legs are extended. 7 j
. 2. The combination in a table, of a top, a pair of transverse strips attached to the underface of the top adjacent to each end thereof, a second pair of transverse strips associated with said first named pair of transverse strips and having substantially the same thickness therewith, hinges connecting the underfaces of each pair of strips, table legs connected with said second named strips, a pair of supporting members hinged at their inner ends arranged to engage the vertical faces of said second named strips when the table legs are extended, a retaining device pivoted to the 10 free edge of each of said second named strips arranged to support said retaining members when the table legs are extended, and a pivoted member connected with said first named strips arranged to hold said 15 second named strips fiat against the bottom of the table when the table legs are folded.
