It is therefore the prlncipal ob ect of the present invention to provide a means for detachably connecting the sections of a sectional furniture covering pad, which, in addition to securely locking the sections in co-related or adjusted position, includes means for readily effecting the release and separation of the sections. j i

The invention furthermore comprehends in a sectional furniture covering pad, interengaging means for locking any combination of two or more pad sections and releasing means therefor.

Uther objects reside in the simplielty and compactness of the locking and releasing means, the economy with which a pad ineluding said means may beproduced, and the general efiicie'ncy and utility derived therefrom.

Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, 10, 11 and 12 designate, respectively, the outer and intermediate sections of table pad, eachsection of which in the present instance is provided with an intermediate layer or ply l3 and outer covering plies 14 and 15, which are suitably secured in place and the outer tree edges of which are bound by a binding element 16. The intermediate ply 13 is composedoi two superimposed plies of relatively different thicknesses, namely, a thick ply 13 and a thin covering ply 13". The thick ply 13 is rabbeted or recessed at 17to accommodate thelocking and releasing elements oi the connecting device. The outer section 11 has mounted in the recessed portion 17', an element 18 for sliding movement, the element 18 being formed with laterally spaced arms 19 having notched or hooked terminals 20 which arenormally re tracted within the confines of the section 11 by springs or other equivalent retracting means 21. The ply 13 has arranged in the recessed portion 17, suitable guide elements 22 in which the arms are slidableand the element 18 is further provided with a central guide projection 23 which is slidable in a guide tunnel 24. The element 18 is provided with a stem 25 having a head. 26 which, when the terminals 20 are normally retracted within the confines of the section 11, isdisposed adjacent the opposite edge in a convenient position for manipulation.

The end or outer section 10 is formedwith laterally spaced keeper tunnels 27 correspending in spacing to the the arms 19 and terminals 20, and said keeper tunnels have associated therewith and laterally projectable thercthrough, retaining bolts 28 normally urged to a retaining position by a spring 29 to interengage with the hooked .or notched terminals 20 to lock the sections in co-related or adjusted positions. The in termediate section is similarly provided adjacent one side ed go, with the laterally spaced lateral. spacing of a releasing, member having laterally spaced longitudinally extending arms 31 provided with cam terminals32, which are designed'to co-operate with cam pins 33 on the retainingbolts 28. Springs 34 normally retract the element 30 and its arms 31 to permit the springs 29 to function to dispose the retaining bolts in their active position. The releasing element 30 is further provided with a stem 35 having a manipulating head 36 which is" normally disposed adjacent the oppos'ite edg'e of the padsection in a convenient position for manipulation. Upon inward pressure exertedon the head 36, the'releasing element 30 and its arms 31 will be movedto cause the cam faces 32 to retract the retaining bolts 28. The intermediate section 12 is also provided with a releasing element of precisely the same construction as the releasing. element in the'section 10.

v In use, when'the sections are to be co relatedand locked in juxtaposition, the locking elements 18 are manipulated by means of the heads 26 to project the hooked or notched terminals 20 beyond the confines or edges of the sections, andat the same time said termirials are inserted in the keeper tunnels 27 of an adjacent section to cause the springpres'sed retaining bolts 28 to engage the same and lock the sections together. \Vhen it is desired toseparate the sections the releasing i. elements 30 are manipulated as heretofore described.

Usually the pad sections include 'foldable portionsand in the present instance the lockving and releasing elements are disposed within fthe intermediate foldable portion of each section. 'Inorder to hold the edges of the outer portion in alinement, in some instances it may be iou'nd desirable to employ .means for this purpose, in which case a member including hingedly connected leaves 37 is employed. Eachleaf 37. has adjacent its freeend a hooked'or notched terminal member 38 corresponding to the terminals 200i the arms 19f 'and the outer portion of the outer section of the pad isprovided' with a keeper tunnel ,39 hav1ng a spring-pressed retaining bolt 40 corresponding to theretaining bolts 28, which bolt-4O is normally moved to an active position by aj'spring 41. The bolts 40 are-provided with cam pins 42 and the extremity of the'leaf 37 isprovided with a spring retracted button 43 having a cam terminal 44 operable upon inward movement by pressure upon the button, to engage the cam pin 42 to retract cluding internally disposed means for rigidly locking the sections in juxtaposition comprisi'ng normally retracted manually projectable hooked elements within the confines of one section and keeper elements within the confines of an adjacent section, said keeper elements including manually operable means for releasing the same.

A sectional furniture covering pad ineluding internally disposed means for rigidly locking adjacent pad sections in juxtaposition, said means consisting of normally retracted manually projectable hooked elements within the confines of one section and keeper elements within the confines of an adjacent section including spring ressed bolts engageable with the hooked e ements and means for releasing the bolts of the keeper elements.

The combination with a sectional furniture covering ad, of internally disposed means for rigir ly locking adjacent sections thereof in juxtaposition comprising normally retracted manually projectable hooked elements dis )osed when retracted within the confines 0 one section and keeper elements disposed within the confines of an adjacent section, the said keeper elements including spring pressed bolts adapted to engage with .f

the manually projected hooked elements and means for releasing the locking means for the padsections including manually operable keeper bolt retracting devices.

1. A furnitnre pad including a plurality of sections, means within the confines of one section adapted to be manually projected into an adjacent section and means in said adjacent section adapted to receive and lock the first means to rigidly hold. the said sections in abutting juxtaposition.

5. A furniture pad including a plurality of sections, means within the confines of one section adapted to be manually projected into an adjacent section, means in said adjacent section adapted to receive and lock the first means to rigidly hold the said sections in abutting juxtaposition and means in the receivin section for releasing the first means whei-eli to disconnect the pad sections.
