FILING DEVICE.
Application filed June 11,
This invention relates to filing devices in bars may be suddenly moved apart with toov fast a motion, so that as a result the papers or correspondence contained in that particular pocket are moved upwardly and thrown out of the pocket, and become disarranged. Also, with this type of independentpocket, the bottom of the pocket 1s apt to bulge when the pocket is filled with papers of a very flexible nature w th the, result that the papers assume a semi-cylm drical shape, crowded up in the bottom of the pocket and in no condition for convenient reference.
An object of this invention is to provide a filing device of the class described in which the pockets are not independent but each pocket has a common dividing wall with the adjacent pocket, and the bottoms ofithe dividing walls are secured to a longitudinal strip of material.
knot-her object of the invention is to provide an improved filing device in which the separation of supporting; bars 1s nmited positively by chains or other devices.
A still further object of the invention is to provide pockets secured at'the bottom to prevent bulging when flexible papers are inserted therein; also to improve filing devices in other respects hereinafter specified and claimed. 1
Reference is to be had to the accompany ing drawingsforming a part of this speci-v fication, in wh ch,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view ofmy improved filing device.
Fig. 2 is a plan fragmentary view of one-end of the filing device.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view through the filing device. I Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view through one end portion of the filing de- Vice.

on a large-scale showingone of the pockets port bars. I 1 7 Referring to the drawings by numerals,
10 indicates a box or container having side walls 11 and end Walls12. These walls are Fig. 6 is an elevation ofone composed of an outer shell and an; inner lining 13 adapted to form an air space 14 therebetween. V This air space is for the pur-; pose of insulating the filing device incase of fire, the top of same being filled with any other kind of insulating material if desired. A pair. of parallel slide bars 15 are secured in a substantially. horizontal position in the box 10 in" any -suitable way such as by passing through the end walls 12 and being threaded on their'outer ends tofreceive nuts 16. In this way the. slide -bars 15 may be removed by axial displacement as to remove or insert pockets.
p The slidebars 15;support a plurality or series of support bars 17, having a loop or eye 18 at each end for slidably receiving said slide bars. in preferably attached one to another at their ends by chains 19 so that the distance that they may be separatedon .theslide bars 15 Arranged somewhat above the bottom of the box 10 1s a horizontally disposed strip oi material 21, this material being preferably of a flexible nature such as cloth, cardboard, or the like. A pocket separator 22 suspended from each of the support bars 17, the upper end of said separator being folded over the support bar and the loose end secured to the separator by any suitable means such as stitches 23, staples, or the like. The bottom of each pocket separator 22 has a horizontally disposed flap 01 fold 24: adapted to abut against the strip of material 21 and be secured thereto by stitches 2,5, staples, or the like.
In this way papers 26 may be inserted in the space between the separator walls 22, and the pockets thus formed are prevented from bulging at the bottom, due to the fact 1 that thebottom of the separator wall 22 is In order to facilitate reference tothe data These support bars'yare or correspondence 26 contained in the pockets, a label holder 27 is preferably secured a to each of the support bars 17 ,said label holder beingpreferably of a transparent material such as celluloid, so. that a label 28 containing index characters may he slipped between folds thereof, and be readily visible I through theiupper transparent fold. This same can be considerably varied without departing from thespirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
bottom strip member in said tray, a plural- "ity of separator members having correfmembers at the free ends and supporting What is claimed as new is:
1. A filing device, comprising astray, a
sponding ends secured to said bottom strip member in spaced relation, and means carried b the tray supporting the opposite ends 0 saidseparator members for relative movement, said bottom strip .meniber re- 'taining said separator members in spaced pocket-defining relation and preventing deformation of the pockets.
2. A filing device, comprising a tray, a
bottom strip member therein, a plurality of separator members having corresponding ends secured to said bottom strip member n spaced relation with each other and with theend separator members spaced similarly from theends of the tray, and means carried by the tray engaging said separator said members for relative movement, said means also supporting said separator members with the bottom strip spaced above the bottomoffsaid tray, and said bottom strip j retaining said separator members inspa'ced pocket-defining relation with each other and the ends of said tray.
3. A filing device, comprising a tray, an
inner lining in said tray mounted in spaced parallel relation to the side'and endiwalls of the tray and forming a closed insulating chamber ar'ound the sides and end thereof, a bottom strip member in the bottom portion of the tray,a plurality of separator members having corresponding ends secured to said bottom strip member in spaced relation relative to each other and the inner lining at the ends of the tray, and supporting means carried by the tray mounting the upper ends 0f said separator members for limited relative movement and supporting said separator members with the bottom strip member spaced above the bottom of the tray in sub-- stantially parallel relation, said bottom strip member retaining saidseparator members in pocket-defining relation with each other and the ends of the tray.
A. A filing device, comprising a series of support bars mounted for sliding movement in a substantially horizontal. plane, a strip member mounted in spaced parallel relation members secured at corresponding ends to said strip member and at the opposite ends to said support bar's adapted toxform a series of pockets for cards and the like, and connecting means between said support bars adapted to limit the separation of said bars.
