SIDE BEARING.
Application filed August 18, 1923. Serial No. 657,019,
This invention relates to improvements in side bearings ili'or railroad cars.
` One object of the invention is to provide a simple, practical and relatively inexpensive roller bearing, especially adapted for railroad car side bearings, and wherein is employed a 'friction roller that is self-centering: without the aid of springs or other parts likely to get out oit order.
More speciiically an object ot the inven tion is to provide an anti-friction roller side bearing' for railroad cars, et a true cylindrical anti-friction roller type wherein means 'including vertically movable weights is provided tor retin'ninfg,` the roller to central p0- sition.
A further object et the invention is to provide a novel construction of roller adapt-ed l'or use in connection with anti-fric tion bearings, comprising an outer portion :toi-ined et? a ksection oi steel tubing, and a cast center. e y y f A still lurther object of the invention is to provide a side beariine` of the type indi-y cated, including; a housing' provided `with a hardened steelY bottoni bearing plate, and` means for securing the plate within the housing.
Other objects and advantages of the in-y vention will'more clearly appear 'from `the f description and claims hereinafter tollowing'. y `v In the drawing, forming a part of this specification, Fig. 1, is a vertical, sectional view taken transversely through the ends of the body and truck holsters of a car showing my improvements in connection therewith. Fig. 2 is atop plan view oi the bearing shown in Fig. 1, said View being partly broken away to better accommodate the iig) ure to the sheet of the drawing. Fig. 3 is a vertical, sectional view taken substantially on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. And Fig. et, yis a detailed side elevational View oiE a. counter'- side bearing.
B; counter weights C-C; ya supporting stand D; and a `wear plate E.
The baser casting A isol substantially recweight used :inconnection with my improved tangular outline, and has parallel, spaced i side walls 12-12, end walls 12B- 13, and perforated corner 141- extending laterally at right angles from the lower ends of the side Walls by which the casting' is riveted or otherwise 'secured to the bolster. The opposite end walls 13 have their upper end portions outwardly oilset and the intermediate portions thereof curved outwardly and upwardly thereby presenting' inner concave surfaces 15 corresponding in curvature to the periphery. of the anti-friction element B,v The oiset portions of the Walls 13 are joined to the main portion ofthe casing A. by side Walls 1G, and the side walls 12 at the upper ends thereoir 'are provided with opposed inwardly extending'iianges 17 down`r wardlyv curved at opposite ends and mero;- ingg' with the webs 16, thereby deiiuing a reic- 'tangular opening 18 through which theupper portion of the anti-'friction element B is adaptedfto project. The end walls 13 are inwardly offset adjacent the opposite side walls 12, as clearly shown in Figs. r1 and 2,
thereby providing` vertical guideways 1S) at opposite sides oi" the casing' A adapted to accommodatel and guide thercounter weights C-C for vertical movement.V The upper ends ofthe guideways 19 are closed by the overhangino,` ilanges 17, which also function means for limiting the upward movement of the counter weights C. v
The anti-friction elementB vcomprises a true cylindrical port-'ion composed et a section of steel tubing' 2() and a core oit cast` metal 21. Depending counter weight wings i 22 are provided at fopp i sitesides oi the cylindrical 'portion oit the anti-friction element, the wings 22 beine,` cast integral with the core 21. The anti-'friction element is formed by casting the core and wings to the section o1 tubing, thereby 'forming' an integral bearing` member having a steel bearing surface',
It will be evident, 'that by thus 4forming;` the roller partly oi" steel and partly of cast metal, a very stron, durable and e'Hicient roller is provided which may be manufactured at a lower cost than the usual all steel 'rollers formed oit sections of steel bars.
` '.lhc'wingrs 22 are ot generally triangular outline, as clearly shown in Fig'. 1, having curved. lower ends 23, straight, upwardly converging side edges Qiand rounded upper end portions 25. The wings 22 are disposed with the centers of gravity thereof at a point considerably below the axis oirotan tion of the roiler, thereby acting` as cornbio raise theV latter when the anti-'tricii-r jment B is rolled'to 'either side ot itsy cenjtral position, the wings 22 acting as crank ber C. Each ot' the"openingIN 27 if w `l\ `rectangular cast metal blocks. c weights C, as best shown in Fig. 4vided with an opening; 27 ent wardly from the lower edge thereoi, t
curved upper `wail lug 26.v The4 slight clearance bet ter-balancing means to assist in returni .C the roller to' contrail position. As clearly shown in Fig. 3, the flanges i7 of the housing over-hang the wings 22 and are adapted to engage with the rounded uppeiI ids thereof to aid in retaining the roller anhin the casing' A. Each ot'ihe wings :22 is pro-V vided with laterally projecting cylindrical lug 26 adjaeent'its lower edge7 centrally disposed between the opposite side'edges there- The lugs 28 et the wings are in axial ,alineinent and are adapted to co-aet with the 'verticaliysnding weights C arms swinging the lugs upwardly.
The weights Care in the form `o Each i 'JI AL vltra-lily between .the opposedends or tore ineinlugs and the side walls et .the rece the Vplates Cris provided to permit si lateral movement oi' the ings during rollingaction ot the. anti-frictionelement i).
As .hereinjshowin two weights C ein-y ployed7 the same being arranged at ,opposite sides of the casting, one being disposed in each guideway 19. Each Voit the weights C is limited to vertical sliding movement by` the opposite end walls ofthe eorrespondingv guidewaty.v It will also be notedV that the overliangingl flanges 17 serve to retain the weights@ within the housing; and act as stops to limit 'their upward movement.
The plate E on which the anti-friction element B rolls, is otrectang'ular outline,
being of a width substantially equal to ,the
i width of the lower portion .of the relier and having its opposite ends beveled .as indicated at 29 and adapted to rest on correspondingly beveled surtaces oi transverse ribs 30 projecting inwardly Jiii-oni the end weilsv '13 and spaced troni the lower edges thereof. The plate also' rests on the supportingstand f B to which it is riveted.
to engage underneath the ribs 30. It wiilee seengthat when the parte are assembled, the plate E and the support D are'secureiy held withinV the casing by engagement or" the beveied ends oi' the plate and the iianges 3l 'with the ribs 30. As clearly shown in Fig. 2, the stand@ and piate E are disposed eentraliy, ero;t ase ofthe member A withi considerable clearance between the edges oi the plate E and the inner faces ot' the aejacent side walls i2 to accommodate the lower poi'- oi the'wings Q2 and the weights C. Furtheim re, the combined stand and plate ormedse as to present the upper bearing surface ot the Ulzite E erabie eievation above e proper of the nieinber if; and the uppern t `e truel; rois-ter,V so as to provide' te the cleaning out et' f ign metter, which may within the casing A, sY rre'ot may be cit away indicnteu In assenibiingv '1 seated The stand or stip position and rivet the rivets l. ir.- he body 'le y above ii anti-trie- .tion roller B. When the bearing is vbrought y action by a rradial movement and relative approach oi the body and truck'bolsters andthe eiement B is rolled to either side of central 'or normal position7` as for instance, tothe position indicated by the dotted lines in l, the lugs 26 will revolve about e axis oi' the roller, swinging upster is siiehily spaced f wardly and raising the weights C. At the same time, t ie integral counter weight wings 22 will also be swung upwardly raising the center' of gravity thereof vand displacing it rto one side of the axis Voi the anti-friction eiement. The limitY of movement of the ant-i-trictionk element B is obtained when the iatter against one of the correspondingiy curved inner surfaces l5 of the casingr A. TWhen the pressure on the bearing is re- 'inoved, the anti-friction element B willbe returned to normal position under the iniiuence ot gravity due to the counter-balarising action of the wings 22a-nd the actic-n et the weights C, which during their downward movement force the lugs 'Q6 to swing downwardly. As the sliding counter weights are limited to vertical movement in the guides i9 and tlie lugs are guided in loo carrying` out the invention, but the same merely illustrative and I #contemplate all changes and modifications that come Within the scope ofthe claims appended hereto.
I claim: y
