Description

UNITED STATES I PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN noconnon, or cnieneo. ILLINOIS, AssIe von Tow Ltreivrn. MINER, r,
CHAZY, uEwYonK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
ANTIFRICTION-IBEARING.
Patented Nov. 2,1192%.
Application filed September 5, 1919.' Serial No. 321 755.
of Illinois,.l1ave invented a certain new and.
usctul improvement. in Antifriction-Bearings, of which the followingis a fulh-clear, concise, and. exact description, reference .being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part ofthis specification.
This invention relates to improvements in. anti-friction bearings.
The object of theinvention is to provide a gravity controlled, self-centering antiiriction roller bearing adapted for use as a Sl(lQ.iJ8tllI1g Oll railway cars.
Invthe drawing formi11ga,part.0f this, specification, Figure l is a vertical sectional view. taken through body and truck bolsters ota, railway cartshowing my improved, bearing.in connection therewith. Fig. Q-is a bottom;,plan view of the side bearing v proper, pants being broken away. in order to accommodate the view on the sheet. And Fig, 3 is a vertical; sectional view takensubstantially on the line 33 'of l ig, 1.
Invsaid drawing, 10 denotes the upper portion of. a truck bolster and, 11. the under sideofa body bolster of; a railway car. I have sl1o\vn-my..impi.'oved hearing. as applied to the truck bolster and, as'shown, the .same comprises broadly, a housing or retaining casting. A, an anti-frictionelenient B, a retaining and wear plate C, and guide; blocksE.
The housing or base casting, as shownis .of substantially hollow box form and has upwardly extended. end walls l2 l2, spaced side walls 13-13, an d corner lugs; 1%14: perforated to accommodate the rivets or other securing means. Said housing A. is open atthe top and the end walls thereof are provided withslots 1515 to permit the insertionand removal of. theplate C. The latter is preferably made of case. hardened steel and is prevented from accidental re moval by. any suitable means such as the cotters l6.
The anti-.iriction element B, as shown, preferably comprises a solid cylindrical section. relierencedl'? adapted to have rolling bearing; contact with the plate 0 and the under side of thebody bolster or any suit able wear plate attachedthereto. Nithj this construction, it is evidentthat I have a true rolling action and, as war hereinafter appear, the same 1s self-centering under the influence of gravity andi withoutthe aid of; springs. or. other devices that would be likely to getoutof order. Said. anti-friction eleimentB is provided at each end. thereof with depending combined. counterweights and centering lugs 18. Eaclnoi lsaidlugs -18 is. more or less wedge-shaped on .its; upper. pole tion and has ia rounded-upper -enc;l.;19 and. diverging flat edges ;.20 .2Q, the latterebe}.
ing extended until the.width otgsaid lug in a direction transverse to the .axis ofpthe roller is substantially equaltothe width ot the guideway formedain the; guide. blocltE' hereinafter described in detail. Below this point, each lug l8 is provided. with a de-i pending seetion havingya moreor, less rounded edge indicated at; 21 The con tours of the lugs 1S are made such that the portions. of the edges thereof presented. to the vertical sides of;the guide, grooves in; the block B will: al vays either be closely adjacent thereto oiyin light contact therewith, without interfering with. the. ,true roll.-
ing movement of the element ;B,-, The soa called guide, block E is formed. .with upstanding; side' Walls-QQF TQZ adapted to be positioned between the endsof the roller sectionlT. and the'side walls. 13 of they base casting A. Said side walls 22 are connected by integral cross bars so located that, they come just beneath the plate C andso that the latter will hold the bloclc E in place when thepartsare assembled. The side walls22 ofthebloclrlfl re recessedas indicated It-p24: and provide v vertical side guides cooperable with the lugs 18 as hereinbefore described. Said recessesQlare clefined at tlieir-iuaper ends .byhsubstantially horizontally extending edges 25 so as to preventthe roller from; being withdrawn when p the parts are assembled.
The parts are assembledin thet'ollowing,
manner: The lugs 18 are introduced into. the recesses 24 by slipping. the anti-friction. element B upwardly through the opening in the bottom of the block E The block- Eand element B are then; inserted. within thehousing A, Then the pl at e C is; intro. duced through the slots 15 5 and. the cotter s applied. so that all parts are thus held, in assembled. relation and. in. condition for ap plication to the bolster. It will he hated; that the plate C bears on the. raised. bottom I) which is formed integral with the member A.
The operation of the side bearing is as follows. When the two bolsters approach each other in a vertical direction and radial movement therebetween occurs, pressure will be applied to the roller section 17 so as t0 roll toeither side of normal position as for instance to the position indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 1. During this rolling movement, the lugs 18 will be elevated within the recesses 24 but due to the configuration thereof, as above described, the-movements of the lugs 18 within the recesses 24L will'be unhampered until the final position indicated by the dotted lines is reached. Upon removal of the pressure from the antifriction element, the lugs 18 will perform their function as counterweights and swing "or roll the element B back to its normal position. By employing the lugs 18 and associated guiding recesses 24:, it is evident-that the anti-friction element can not be bodily displaced by jarring or vibration by an amount greater than the small clearance left between the edges of the lugs 18 and the vertical edges of the guiding recesses 24. In this manner, the bearing will always be in condition to perform its full travel and the anti-friction element is positively self-centering without the aid of any springs or like devices which easily get out of order. It will also be noted that I obtain the true rolling action but without the disadvantages usually attendant uponthe employment of so-called rockers.
By forming the parts as shown, it is evident that all of the same, with the exception of the plate 0, may be easily made in the form of castings, (preferably malleable castings. The plate will generally be made of case hardened steel from plate material. V Y
