MATTRESS COVER.
Application led November 30, 1922'.l Serial No. 236,785.
rlhis invention relates to a mattress cover, and one object of the invention is to provide a device 0f this character which,` will serve not only to keep the mattress clean but also sanitary.- i
Another object of the invention is to pro- .vide a mattress cover having its upper 'and lower walls of a duplicate construction so that it may be drawn upon a mattress without special care being exercised to present a certain wall uppermost and also permit a mat-` tressto be reversed with the. cover in place and still be rotected.
Another o ject of the invention is to connect the upper and lower walls of the cover with bordering strips constituting side and end walls for the cover and having portions overlapped at the corners of the cover so that the corner portions will be reinforced and prevented from'being quickly worn through or coming apart. y
Another object of the invention is to pro- 4vide a mattress cover of an envelope formation in which a mattress may be' fitted similar to the manner in which a pillow is placed within its case and the open end of the coverl closed by flaps releasably secured in overlapping relation toeach other.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a top plan viefw of the improved mattress cover;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1 and showing the cover applied to a mattress, and v Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective view of one corner portion of the cover applied to a mattress.
The improved mattress cover is provided with upper and lower walls 1 which are rectangular inform and each consists of inner and outer sheets 2 and 3 of yporous fabric, such as cotton or the like, and an'inner sheet 4 formed of absorbent material and preferably consisting of outing flannel, although any material of an absorbent nature may be substituted. These upper and lower walls 'and that these overlying portions" are stitched into jplace and constitute means to reinforce the 'adjacent corner portions of the cover. Atfthe open end of the cover, there has been provided cross strips 10 which are secured to the adjacent ends of the walls 1 and also secured in overlying relation to the side walls to reinforce the same. These strips 10 project from the endsof the side walls in order to provide flaps 11 which are intended to be folded toward each other, as shown in Fig. 2, after the `cover has beenv drawn upon a mattress and releasably secured by a suitable number of snap fasteners 12 spaced fromI each other across the flaps transversely of the cover.
When the mattress cover is in use, it is drawn upon the mattress from one endthereof toward the other until the mattress is entirely enclosed within the cover. The iaps 11 are then moved into overlying relation to each other and the snap fasteners pressed into engagement with each other. It will be obvious that, if desired, buttons and cooperating buttonholes or tapes to be tied together could be substituted for the snap fas teners. When the cover is in place, the entire mattress will be enclosed and prevent the mattress from being soiled by dust accumulating upon it. It should also be noted that, since the inner layers 4 of the upper and lower walls are of absorbent material, moisture may be absorbed and the mattress thus prevented from being discolored or rendered unsanitary. The mattress may be reversed with the cover in place and when necessary the cover may be easily removed and laundered in the usual manner.
Having thus described the invention, I claim:
1. A mattress cover open at one endand comprising upper and lower walls each consisting of inner and outer sheets and a sheet of absorbent material between the inner and outer sheets, side strips constituting the outer sheet being formed of porous material,l side walls for the cover and having upper and lower portions extending inwardly 'to overlap side portions of a mattress and secured along the side margins of the upper and lower walls, an end strip constituting an end wall for the closed end of the cover and having upper and lower portions extending inwardly and secured along the adjacent ends of the upper and lower walls with their end portion overlying adjacent ends of the side strips, and an end strip at the open end of said cover secured along the ends of the upper and lower walls and overlying the ends of the side strips and having extended portions constituting closure aps for the open end of the cover.
2. A mattress cover open at one end and comprising upper and lower walls, strips constituting side walls for the cover and having upper and lower portions extending inwardly to overlap the side portions of a mattress and secured along the ,side margins of the upper and lower walls, a strip constituting an end wall for the closed end of the cover and having upper and lower portions extending inwardly and secured along adjacent ends of the upper and lower walls, and a strip at the open end of said cover secured along the ends of the upper and lower walls and having extended portions constituting closure flaps for the open end of the cover.
In testimon. swhereof I aiix my signature.
