This invention relates to a functionally and structurally improvedhair curler.

It is an object of the invention to provide a device of this character which will embody an extremely simple and rugged construction capable of being produced at a nominal figure and with a minimum of labor, the device furthermore operating over long periods of time with freedom from difficulty.

A further object is that of constructing a hair curler or .waver which will eliiciently form' or maintain a hair wave and which may be worn with practically no discomfort.

A still further object is that of providing such a-device which may be applied to, or removed from the hair with but little effort and which, when applied, will not become readily and accidentally detached and which, furthermore, when it is in applied position, will not shift out of such position.

With these and further objects in mind reference is had to the attached sheet of drawings in which there is illustrated two practical embodiments of the invention and in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a curler in closed position;

Figs. 2 and 3 are similar enlarged views of the end portion of the curler, and

Fig. 4C is a view similar to Fig. 1, but showing the curler in opened position and illustrating a slightly different constructlon than that shown in the first figure.

A curler of this nature may be constructed of any desired material such as, for example, strip metal embodying sufficient resiliency to meet the needs of the present device. This strip is bent in a forming operation which may be by means of dies, in order to conform, generally, to the curvature of the scalp and at the same time other portions are provided which will hereinafter be referred to.

generally, to the curvature of the scalp and with a view to preventing longitudinal displacement of the curler or waver, the upper? portion may, as in Figure l, be formed, at its time of manufacture, with indentations or bulged portionsl2 and, as in Figure 4, if desired, the lower portion 6 may be formed with similar andcomplementary parts 13.

in using a device of this character the hair is properly arranged, after which, with the outer end of the lower portion detached from the corresponding end of the upper portion the former is inserted below the tress of hair, after which the tongue is inserted through the opening 11, thus securing the device in posi tion. In such position it is obvious that no discomfort will be experienced by the wearer and accidental shifting of the device is precluded by virtue of the fact that a certain amount of the hair tresswill be engaged within or between the bulged portion or portions Figure 2, the lower portion 6 may, in'advance of the tongue, be formed with-an outwardly bulgedportion 14: which, in addition to serving to prevent the waver from shifting accidentally, will act as a finger hold whereby the tongue may readily be withdrawn from its position within the opening and the lower portion may be moved sidewise with respect to the upper portion so that the parts clear each other to permit of the readydetachment of the waver when this is desired.

Thus, among others, the several objects aforementioned are achieved, it being intended, however, that numerous'changes in construction might be resorted to without in the slightest departing from the spirit of the invention as defined by the claims.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A device of the character described including cooperatingup'per and lower portions, both curved in the same direct-ion, the

end of one of such portions terminating in a hook presenting anenlarged head and an inwardly and outwardly curved shank extending therefrom, a tongue at the free end of the other portion and being outwardly curved or and extendingthrough a slot formed in'the havin-g an inwardly and outwardly curved shank portion formed with an opening and an outwardly curved tongue at the "free end of the lower portion of said device and extending through said opening and bulged portions formed in the upper portion'of said device. v r
