' and useful Improvement in Tooth-Powder 0f the brush for which it is designed.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OSCAR TWITOHELL, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN TOOTH-POWDER BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No- 179,433, dated July 4, 1876; application filed April 22, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, OSCAR TWITOHELL, of the city of Philadelphia, Philadelphia county, State of Pennsylvania, have. invented a new Boxes, of which the following is a full description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation; Fig. 2, a vertical longitudinal section; Fig. 3, a vertical transverse section.
It is customary to put up tooth-powder in a bottle or box the mouth of which is not large enough to receive the whole of a tooth-brush proper, and access to the powder in such packages is not convenient.
My invention consists in providing a box having a month or opening adapted to receive the whole of the face of a tooth-brush, with a shelf or receptacle adapted to receive and hold a small portion of the powder, and located a short distance below the month.
In the drawings, A represents a box, which may be made of metal, glass, or other suitable material. The top, as shown, is contracted both from the sides a and ends I). The opening 0 in the top is a trifle longer and a trifle wider than the length and width of the face d is a shelf or receptacle, located at a convenient distance below the mouth 0. Around its edges it is provided with the raised ledge e, and there is an open space between its edges and the box A. This shelf d, as shown, is supported on the part B, which is permanently secured to the bottom of the box A, and is so arranged that there is a space, f, all around and between it and the sides of the box A for the tooth-powder; but the powder is excluded from the space beneath the shelf (1. G is a cork or stopper for the opening 0. A suitable cover may be provided for this opening, if desired.
When the box, constructed as described, is first filled, the powder will occupy the spacef around B, and, ifasnfficient quantity be used, it will also till the space, ora portion of it, above the shelf d. After that portion upon the shelf has been used, by tipping the box bottom side up and quickly reversing its position, a portion of the powder can be brought upon the shelf d, so that access can conveniently be had to it with the brush, and this can be done so long as any powder remains in the box.
It is not necessary that the powder should be excluded from the space beneath the shelf 41, as the shelf might be supported upon one or more standards, or in some other suitable manner.
I do not limit myself to the exact form of shelfor receptacle shown. Its bottom may be circular or triangular, or ofsome other form.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:
In a tooth-powder box, the shelf or table (1, in combination with an outer case, A, leaving a space or spaces around the shelf, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
