IMPROVEMENT IN SHEET-METAL BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 150,929, dated May 12, 1874; application filed March 27, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE ZUGK- SGHWERDT, ofthe city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sheet-Metal Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawing, forming part of this specification, in which drawing- Figure l represents a longitudinal section of my box, when the same is closed. Fig. 2is a transverse section of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan or top view of the same when partly open.
Similar letters indicate correspondn g parts.
This invention consists in a box made in two parts, the lower part or body of the box being formed with two heads, and with overlappin g lianges on its sides, which form guides for lips projecting from the sides oi' the upper part or cover ofthe box, said cover being provided with a head at one and with a stop at its opposite end in such a manner that by means of the lips of the cover and the overlapping fianges of the body the two parts are made to slide in or out, the stop in the cover preventing the latter from being drawn out beyond the desired point, while the heads at the opposite ends of the body and of the cover impart to the box a good finish when the same is closed. The outer edges of the overlapping flanges on the body of the box form straight edges or rulers for drawing straight lines.
In the drawing, the letter A designates the body of my box, which is made of sheet metal, open at the top, and provided at one end with a head, a., while its other end is closed by head b. Both heads project above the body A, and the head a is provided with a ange, c, while the head b is finished to form the end of the box when the same is closed. On the sides of the body A are formed overlapping anges d, which form guide-grooves for lips c, projecting from the sides of the cover B. This cover is also formed of sheet metal, and it corresponds in form to the body A. It is opened at one end and closed at the other by a head, f, which corresponds in shape to the head b of the body A. In the open end ofthe cover B is secured a stop, g, Fig. 1, audit' the cover is drawn out the stop strikes the ange c of the head a, and prevents said cover from sliding out beyond the desired point. The flange c of the head a assists in steadyin g the cover B when the same is drawn out. The outer edges of the over lapping flanges d form straight edges, which serve as straight-edges or rulers, and if my box is used for carrying drawing materials or pens these straight-edges are a very convenient appendage.
My box can, however, be used for carrying cigars, or any other articles, and it can be made in any convenient forni or shape.
I ain aware that sheet-metal boxes have been constructed in which the cover and bottom, when placed together, formed, with their sides, top, and bottom, a box in cross-section, representing a truncated cone, there being no provision for limiting or steadying the sliding motion of the cover; and, further, thel sides of the cover being exposed are liable to be bent out of shape, not only distiguring the box, but causing the cover to become detached and impractical in operation.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
. A sheet-metal box, in which the body A is formed with the overlapping flange d on its side edges, forming retaining and guide grooves for the lips c c, projecting laterally from the cover B, said parts being combined and constructed with the heads a b f, steadying-flange c, and stop g, as herein shown, for the purpose specified.
