V\! J. PANNIER, JR., ET AL I HAMMER STAMP Filed April 15, 1929 Patented Jan. 20, 193 1 UNITED ,SOTATESPATENT OFFICE WILLIAM J. PANNIER, JR., OF BELLEVUE, AND OSCARzM. PANNI'ER, 0F KILBUCK'TOWN: SHIP, ALLEGHENY COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNORS TO PANNIER BROTHERS STAMP COMPANY, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF PENN- SYLVAN IA HAMMER STAMP Application 'filed April 7 15,
resiliency adapting the face of the stamp to' effect good contact, independent of variationsin exact parallelism between the surface to'be stamped and the stamping surface, when used. A
Thedevice consists generally of a stamp, in either single or double form, havin g an operating handle so connected as to permit of a limited degree of flexibility whereby vto compensate for any lackof accuracy in de- 7 livering the blow so as to allow the stamping face to automatically adjust itself, under the impulse of the blow.
'In' its construction, our stamp is composed of asingle orv double head portion composed ofrubber or other suitable resilient or flexible material,- a'handle and means connecting it with the stamping member or members, together with thereinforci ng ele ment imbedded in'the stamping head adjacent to the stampingcharacters for-stiffening and reinforcement ofthe active face of the tool, together with certain'other features of constructionand advantage, as shall be more fully hereinafter described. i
Referring tothe drawings showing preferred constructions: I
Fig. 1 isa view in side elevation, showing the doublelhead form-of stamp complete;
1 Fig. 2 is a plan view of the upper stamping face thereof Fig.'3 is a similar view'iof" the opposite stamping face on the line IFV-IVof Fig, .1; V
Fig. 5 is a cross sectional detail view on the line V-V of Fig. 4:;
Fig." 6 is-a View similarto 1' showing a singlehead stamp.
'In the drawings, the main hammer head 1929. Serial No. 355,123.
2 comprising one of the stamping members is made of rubber or the like having an enlarged outer body of circular or other form adapting it to provide for any suitable printin'g'letters, figures or characters, as indicated on the face view, Fig. 3. Such characters are ordinarily molded in the rubber, as at 3, or may be'in the form of detachable inserted type a, all mounted on a commonplane;
For the purpose of reinforcing the head! closely adjacent to the area em'b'odyingsuch characters, the head is providedf with a .thin reinforcing reticulated" or perforated plate 5 imbedded in and preferably vulcanized'to the rubber body of the head.
Plate 5 maybe of copper, brass,or other suitable 'material, having a series'of closely" adjacentopenings throughout itsjarea, into and through which the rubber is invested in v the process of manufacture whereby to intimately connect and ama'lgamate the head and itsplate. "When thus inserted, plate'j5, which, extendsacross the main middle portion of the head terminating slightly within its edge asjshown in Fig.';4, stiifensand reinforces its-entire outer body portion so as to effect sufficientstiffening and impart a desired-degree of rigidity for thepurposes statecL r The body portion of the head 2 may be of any suitable form, andis provided with an inner diminishing or narrowed neclr6 hav ing a flat opposing face for attachment to and connection with the end 7 of an operating handle-=8. A central connecting bolt-9 is inibed'ded by its head and shank portionan-d vulcanized within the middle of the head .2, and projects sufficiently far beyond .itssmaller attaching face ztO 'extendthrough a registering-hole inthe end of the handle and therebeyond, 'for'attachmentto a companioi'i stamp in the doublesided-form as in'Fig-a, v .or for connection withsecuringnuts10-1.1
Fig. 4 -is;an enlarged cross sectional view in the single head; form,;as inF 6. A
In the double construction, the opposite head 2a is .fgenerally'similar to. head 2 above described, being proviidedwith the reinforcnoritself, or separately attached as by the stamping characters tea. The latter, shown in detail in Fig. 5, may be of the split wedge type like that shown in prior patent of W 5. Pan-V nier, Jix, No. 1,191,820. In such case their divided bases bear against the inner socketed surface of the head, closely adjacent to plate 5a, providing a sutliciently firm and comparatively rigid opposing bearing.
The companion head 2a of suitable form and design, is also preferably proviced with a reduced neck 6a in the center of which is imbedded and vulcanized a sleeve nut 12 of any suitable form.
The nut 11 makes screw engagement with the threaded outer end of bolt 9 by turning and tightening thereon, by which the two heads are tightly clamped together and against the opposite side faces of the handle terminal 7.
By such construction head 2a may be readily connected to or disconnected from the other head 2, for substitution as to one or both, of other similar heads having different.
marking or stamping characters, or for any other purpose.
lVith either form of construction, the ,com-
paratively soft rubber body of the heads surrounding bolt 9 and nut 12 provides ample flexibility to adapt the face of either head to make a good stamping impression, whether brought fairly and evenly against the surface to be stamped, or at a considerable angle thereto by theoperator. When there is any such variation, as is indicated by the dotted lines in Fig.1, and the face of either head is brought against'a surface with which it would not ordinarily register, due to any angular relation, the flexibility of the head connection with the handle permits of automatic adj ustment and good stamping results, under impact of the blow. V
The construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood and appreciated by all those familiar 'with .hand operated stamping devices. It iscomparatively simple in construction capable of easy and rapid change or substitution, and may be used at considerable speed by alternately striking upon an inking pad and then upon a surface to be marked, withou't'the necessity for any special skill.
The device is extremely useful, .very durable, and may be made in different shapes, designs, sizes, weights, or otherwise changed or varied by the skilled mechanic, but all such changes are to be understood as within the scope of the following claims.
