The present invention relates to cartons or containers formed by folding, and one object of the invention is to provide a carton formed by folding and havlng a protective structure for shipment therein of articles easily broken by rough usage. Another object of the invention is to provide a .one

carton and which also strengthens the cari ton against strains tending to bend or break .the carton either lengthwise or cross-wise.

Another object of the invention is to provide a foldably formed carton having cushioning means at the sides and ends of the body portion of the carton and a grid bed in the body portion protected at its sides and ends by this cushioning means, the grid bed being spaced away from the bottom and top of said body. portion for yieldably supporting the contents of the carton.

Another object of the invention is to provide afoldably formed grid bed for the purpose above stated.

A feature of the invention is the provision of a body portion of the carton having double side walls and double end walls, the inner walls of the double side walls and double end walls being spaced away from the outer walls so as to provide cushioning space between the inner and outer walls on four sides of the body portion.

Another feature is the provision of a body portion of the carton having double side walls and double end walls, the inner walls of the double side walls and double end walls being spaced away from the outer walls by a flat top edge face extending around the four sides of the contents space of the body portion and forming cushioning means on four sides of the body portion for protecting the contents of the carton and also for strengthening the carton against strain tending to bend or break it either lengthwise or cross-wise.

Another feature is the provision of a grid bed conformably engagingin the interior space of the body portion of the carton formed by the cushion walls of the body portion and having a grid surface for receiving articles thereon, this grid surface being supported by legs extending from the front and rear sides and the ends of the grid surface 1 21nd engaging the bottom of the body por- I attain the above objects and such other objects as may later appear herein, by the mvention, one of the possible embodiments of which is described in the subjoined specification' and shown in the'drawings accompanying the specification, and while herein details of the, invention are described the invention is not limited to these, since many and various changes may be made therein without departure from the spirit of the mvention or exceeding the scope of the appended claims.

The blank, Fig. 5, for forming the carton has the oblong main portion generally denoted by A, having on its sides about midway of its length the extensions generally denoted 13, the rear-wall section 14, the cover section 15, and the flap section 16.

face section 18, inner end wall section 19 and flap section 20 being foldably connected and collectively free-hanging at one end of the bottom section 10; the end closure tab 21 being free-hanging at one of the ends of the front wall section 11 and the end closure tab 22 being free-hanging at one of the-ends of therear wall section 14.

The side extension C includes the outer end wall section 23, the end top-face section 24, the inner end wall section 25, the retaining flap section 26 and the end closure tabs 27 and 28; the outer end wall section 23, top-face section 24, inner end wall section 25 and flap 26 bein foldably connected and collectively freean 'ng at the end of the bottom section 10 opposite the first mentioned end thereof; the end closure tab 27 being free-hanging at the end of the front wall'section 11 opposite the first mentioned end thereof and the end closure tab 28 being free-hanging at the end of the rear wall section 14 opposite the first mentioned end thereof.

The supporting top-face section 12 has therein the parallel cuts 29 and 30 extending longitudinally of the blank and connected at their ends by the parallel transverse score lines 31 and 32 whereby are formed the free hanging inner front wall 33 having the retaining flap 34 and the free-ban g inner rear wall 35 having the retainin ap 36 and also is formed the top face 37 w ich extends along the four sides of the sup orting topface section 12, the portion of t e blank between the free longitudinal edges of the retainin flaps 34 and 36 being removed so that these aps are separated by the opening 0.

Referring to Fig. 7, the blank for forming the grid bed has an oblong main portion constituting the grid bed section 38 having on the sides thereof the free-hanging leg sectlons 39 and 40 and on the ends thereof the freehanging leg sections 41 and 42. The grid bed section 38 has therein the transverse parallel openin s 43 whereby the parallel grid bars 44 are ormed.

Referring to Figs. 4 and 5, to form the carton the front wall section 11 is folded upwardly on the score line 45 and the rear wall section 14 is folded upwardly on the score line 46 to vertical positions; the su porting top-face section 12 is folded upwardly when said front wall 11 is flat on the score line 47 and carried over rearwardly when said wall 11 is raised and the flap section 13 folded downwardly on the score line 48 and di osed flat a aiiist the inner face of the rear we 1 14 and a hesively or otherwise suitably secured thereto; the end closure tabs 21 and .22 are folded inwardly on the score'lines 49 and 50 and into alinement between the front and rear wall sections and theend closure tabs 27 and 28 are folded inwardly on the score lines 51 and 52 and into alinement between the front and rear wall sections; the inner front wall section 33' is folded down-- wardly on the score line 31 to a vertical position and the retaining flap section 34 is folded on the score line 53 outwardly towards the front wall and engaged flat on the bottom section 10; the inner rear wall section 35 is folded downwardly on the score line 32 to a vertical position and the retaining flap section 36 is folded on the score line 54 outwardly towards the rear wall 14 and engaged flat on the bottom section 10, the carton thus being provided with outer and the supporting top-face 37, the top-face 3 and the outer and inner front and rear walls forming a protective and strengthening cushion at the front and rear sides of the carton.

The outer end wall section 17 is folded upwardly on the score line 55 to vertical position and the end top-face section 18 is folded on the score line 56 and carried over and disposed flat on the supporting top-face section 37, the inner end wall section 19 is folded downwardly on the score line 57 and the retaining flap section 20 is folded on the score line 58 and engaged fiat on the bottom section 10; the outer end wall section 23 is folded upwardly on the score line 59 to a vertical position and the end top-face section 24 is folded on the score line 60 and carried over and disposed flat on the supporting topface section 37 the inner end wall section 25 is folded downwardly on the score line 61 and the retaining flap section 26 is folded on the score line 62 and engaged flat on the bottom section 10, the carton thus being provided with outer and inner end walls spaced apart by the supporting top-face 37 which is reinforced b the end top- faces 18 and 24, the end topaces 18 and 24 and supporting top-" face 37 and the outer and inner end walls forming a protective and strengthening cushion at the ends of the carton, ofwhich cushion the alined end closure members 2128 form a part, the carton being in the assembled folded condition shown in Fig. 3, and being provided with an intra-marginal opening or space for reception of articles.

As a means for supporting and protecting the contents in this space on the bottom side thereof the grid bed is provided.

Referring to Fig. 7, the grid bed is formed from the blank by bending downwardly to vertical positions the side and end legs 39-42 on the score lines defining the main or bed section 38 of the blank; the grid bed is disposed in said intro-marginal space and conformably engaged therein, the bed section 38 being spaced away from the bottom 10 of the body portiog of the carton by the height'of the legs 3942; the contents of the carton, such as small glass vials or bottles, is disposed, Fig. 9, in the openings 43, rounded portions of the vials engaging these openings and the vials being resiliently or yieldably supported by the bed surface as hereinafter described and spaced away somewhat from the horizontal plane of the top face 37 and end top faces 18 and 24. For further protecting the contents of said carton at the bottom and top thereof a yieldable member, such as the strip 63 of corrugated paste board may be disposed under the grid bed and other yieldable matter indicated b 64 may be placed in the carton on top 0 the contents, pamphlets or other printed matter relating to the contents and which provide yieldable protection bein suitable for this purpose, the carton then eing sealed b securing the flap 16 of the cover in a suit-a 1e manner to the outer face of the outer front wall 11.

Having thus described my invention what I claim is:

1. A carton formed by folding and having a box portion including double end walls, the outer walls of said double 'end walls being spaced away. from the inner walls by an integral frame shaped supporting top-face extending over the top of said box and-encompassing the same and an integral outer topface disposed over the supporting top-face, said outer and inner walls and top-faces forming a protective cushion at each end of the box portion.

2. A carton formed by folding and having a box portion including double front and double rear walls and double end walls, the

outer walls of the double front and rear walls ,outer and inner end walls and the last mentioned top faces forming a protective cushion at each end of the box portion.

3. A carton formed by folding and having a box portion provided with a supporting top face, embodying a protective-cushion at the front and rear sides of the box portion and spaced from the sides and ends of the carton, a protective cushion at each end of the box portion, said cushions being integral with said sides and ends, there being space formed in the box portion between said front and rear cushions and end cushions, and a resilient bed disposed in said space for receiving articles thereon.

4. A carton formed by folding and having a box portion, provided with a sup orting top face, embodying a protective cus ion at the front and rear sides of the box portion and spaccdfrom the sides and ends of the carton, a protective cushion at each end of the box portion, said cushions being integral with said sides and ends, there being space formed in the box portion between said front and rear cushions and end cushions, and a strip of corrugated paste board, to form a resilient bed, disposed insaid space, for receiving thereon articles, which are thereby spaced away from the bottom of said box portion.

5. A carton formed by folding and having a box portion including double front and double rearwalls and double end walls, the

, the outer walls of the double end walls being spaced away from the inner walls by a supporting top-face and an'outer top-face disposed over the supporting top-face, said outer and inner end walls and the last mentioned top-faces forming a protective cushion at' each end of the box'portion, there being space formed in the box portion between said front and rear cushions and end cushions, and a foldably formed resilient bed for receiving articles thereon and engageable in said s ace and supported in position-spaced away rom the bottom of the box portion and from the top edges of said cushions by means engaging the bottom of the box portion.

6. In a foldably formed carton a protective cushion formed by outer and inner front, rear and end walls, an integral frame shaped supporting top face, extending inwardly from the front, rear and ends of the carton, and an outer top face, disposed over the supporting top face, said top faces being integral with said carton and spacing apart said inner and outer front, rear and end walls.

7 The blank for forming a carton by folding the blank on the score lines and cuts thereof, said blank having a rectangular main portion and side extensions about midway of the main portion, said main portion including a bottom section, outer front and rear wall sections, a supporting top-face section, a flap section thereon, a cover section, and a cover flap section, said extensions including freehanging end closure tabs on the ends of the outer front and rear wall sections, and combined free-hanging outer and inner end wall and top-face sections on the ends of the bottom section, said supporting top-face section having therein parallel cuts extending longitudinally of the blank connected at their ends by parallel transverse score lines and forming a free-hanging inner front wall having a retaining flap thereon and a free h'anginginner rear wall having a retaining" flap thereon, the flaps of said inner front and rear walls bein spaced a art by an open portion of the blan ,each 0* said combined free-hanging sections including an outer end wall section, an outer top-face section, an inner end wall 'section and a retaining flap on the inner end wall section.
