.a This invention relates to a tongne andteeth sethfondollsand the like, and an obj ect'ofthe; invention is to iprovidea set which may" be easily and cheaply manufactured and which may be readily attached in position within the mouthpopening ofa doll head. t i a A more detailedlobje'ctis to provide a set which may be-made of sheet metal or other appropriate sheet material and embodying 'attachingmeans by which the setmay'be' attachedwithirithe'doll head. i a c i A further object is'to provide a set comprising improved means wherebyjthe teeth member y or ;members thereof are" retained or VA I orespecifici ob jectisto proyide in which the-teeth member is formed 'scpai rately from the remainder of the structure and in which clamp" means is provided for retaining the teeth member-conne te in posi tion as a part;ofthestructure. a V
A further specific object is to'proyide a set in which the teeth niemb'er may be formed as an integral part'of the structure.
' n3 Other objects andl'aims of the invention,
moreior less specificithan those referred to above, will be in part obvious and in part pointed outin the course of the following description ofthe elements, combinations, ar-
mrangementsugof'partsfand applications of principles constituting the inventions; and the scope -;of protection contemplated will be indicated in the appended claims... a p f i In the accompanying drawings which are i to be. taken as a part ofthis specification, and in "whichlhave shown merely a preferred form of embodiment of theinventionzy Fig. 1 is a sideelevationa'lyiew of atongne and teeth set constructed in accordance with this invention and showing the same as it appears in position-withinadoll head, a portionof the doll head being shown invertical section, i i e 11 g FigL-2 is a horizontal s'ectional yiew taken substantially upon the plane of'line IIII ofFig'. 1.1 a, i
Fig. 3 isga front elevational View: of the tongue and teeth set appearing in Fig. 1, the relative position oftheniouth opening of the doll head beingshown by heavy dotted lines.
' Figie is ayert-ical sectional View substantially upon the plane of line IV.IV
providing the teeth. V t o Fig,;7 is a side elevational iew of; the
. structure seen in Fig. 6,'a;part beingshown in vertical section substantially upon the plane of line VIL VII of F ig. ;6,and w Figs. 8 and 9 are views similar to Figshti and 7 but illustrating, a further modification ofthe manner of providingthejteeth. 1
Referring to the drawings for describing in detail the structures illustrated therein, and referring specificallyfirst to the structure illustrated in Figs. 1 to4, the reference character L indicates a part of the frontportion of a dollhead, the mouth opening being shown at 1. i
g The tongue; and teeth set with which this invention is concerned is indicated generally by the reference character Gr, said set" com-1 prising broadly a base or mouth representing portion as 2, a tongue representing portion 3 centrally of thebase2,and ateeth represent i ing portion 4:, all held together; asla single entity andadapted to be inserted into and, 5 f.
fastened in position within the mouth open it ingi l of the head in approximately the relation as clearly indicated in Figs. lito 3 of the drawing. f a a In the structureas disclosed in Figs, 1,,to 4 the teeth portion 4: is formed] as a separate .piece of material, suchas sheet metal, celluloid, or otherwise suitably colored andshaped to represent human teeth, the remainder of the structure being llkewlse formed of suit able material either 1 sheet metal, celluloid,
or otherwise, and having an extending portion as 5 bent over :upon itself as at 6 to provide a clamp within which the teeth member is gripped and held in appropriate relation to the tongue 3. a
The material from which thetbase and tongue portions are formed would of course 1 i be colored, at least upon itsontwardly facing ini viewed throu h the mouth aenin 1 of the o doll head onl i the tongue 8 the lower mara'in of the teeth. memoer 4, and the central. part of the base 2 will be visible, as will be apparent from an inspection of Fig. 3 wherein the dotted line 7 represents the relative size and position of the mouth opening.
When the set is placed within the doll head the extension part thereof may rest against an interior surface part as 8 of the head above the mouth opening while a lower marginally projectin part as 9 may rest against an interior surface as 10 of the head below the mouth opening. The opposite end marginal parts as 11 and 12 may rest against adjacent interior surface parts as 13 and 14: respectively. The position of the set with respect to the mouth opening may thus be positively defined, and when the set has been once thus positioned, or as nearly thereto as is practicable considering the surface contour of the head, then the set is attached rigidly in that position. a
The operation of attaching the set may be effected in any appropriate manner either by the use of cement, separate or integral. fastening devices, or otherwise. In the instance illustrated however integral fastening devices are employed. These consist of a pair of tangs as 15 and 16 continuing as integral extensions from the opposite ends of the base 2. At the time when the set is being inserted into position within the head these tangs extend normally backwardly beyond the plane of the surfaces 13 and 14;, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 2, so as not to interfere with the bringing of said surfaces into engagement with the opposing parts of the doll head. They however are bendable and are intended to be bent forwardly to drive the pointed ends of the tangs into the material of the head after the final desired position of the set has been reached, as indicated by the full lines in Fig. 2.
Any appropriate tool or other device may be employed for carrying the set into the head and for bending the tangs to effect attachment of the set, such for instance as the tool shown and described in the application Serial No. 228,941, filed October l-th, 1927, which is being filed concurrently here with.
In Fig. 5 is shown a modification in which more than one teeth member is present. In this instance the lower marginal edge of the base 2 is provided with an extension as 17 which is turned over upon itself as at 18 to provide a clamp within which is received and held the second teeth member as 19, all in the same manner as heretofore described wit respect to the manner of forming and supporting the teeth member 4.
In this same manner any number of teeth members may be employed, and likewise their position with respect to the tongue 3 may vary in accordance with the artistic dictates of the designer or manufacturer since obviously the extensions 5-1:- may be placed at substantially any selected locality about the margin of the base 2, and likewise the teeth members may be of any form either representing a single tooth, a plurality of uniform teeth, a plurality of teeth of uneven or grotesque appearance, or otherwise.
In the modification Figs. 6 and 7 a structure is proposed in which the teeth forming portion is integral with the remainder of the structure. In this instance the teeth forming portion consists merely of a turned over extension as 20 of a marginal part of the base. This turned over extension may be provided at any selected point about the margin of the base, either above or below the tongue 3, and it may be given any desired shape according to the artistic dictates of the designer so that, as in the previous structure, any form or number of teeth may be represented and in any selected relation to the mouth openin It will be understood of course that the base and tongue portions should be properly colored for instance reddish color as in the previous structure while the teeth should be of appropriate teeth color. Such coloring may be applied or effected in any appropriate manner either before or after the shaping of the sheet material into set form, but it is herein suggested that as an inexpensive and satisfactory manner of producing the desired result the piece of sheet material from which the set is tobe formed shall be previously coated with an appropriate reddish coloring material as 22 on one surface and an appropriate whitish coloring material as 23 on the opposite surface so that when the set is completed the turning in of the extension 20 will expose the whitish color upon the outer surface of the teeth portion, as clearly shown in the sectional portion of the illustration Fig. 7
In Figs. 8 and 9 is suggested a further modified manner in which the set may be economically produced. In this instance it is proposed that the blanlr from which the set is to be formed shall be lithographed on one surface in such manner that when the set is formed a portion of the set of suitable whitish color shall be raised and suitably formed upon the base 2 so as to represent the teeth, as at 21, in said Figs. 8 and 9.
In other respects the'structures Figs. 6 to raised tooth forming portion 21 ofthe structure Figs. 8 and 9 may be produced at any selected locality upon the base and may be;
9correspond with the arrangement and man-. ner of use as described with respect to the structures Figs. 1"to 5, and obviously the of any form etc. to satisfy the desires of the o manufacturer for artistic results, novelty or grotesqueness, as in the other structures,
Although it a featureof the present invention to providemeans as hereinabove referred to for representingteeth asfparts of the set, it will nevertheless be understood cial termgenerally employed with reference terpreted as illustrative only and notina limiting sense.
" Patent is:
that in some instances the mouth and tongue portions may be employed, the teeth being wholly omitted and on this account it isdesired to mention that the term tongue and teeth set as hereinused is merely a commerto sets of this type, and that said term is. herein intended to comprehend any form of 7 device arranged within the mouth or similar opening of the doll head where teeth are actually present as a part of the structure or not. As many changes could be made. in this construction without departing from the scope of theinvention .as defined in thefollowing claims, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description, or shown in the accompanying drawings, shall be inmember formed separatelyfrom the tongue member, and an integral part of said sheet theteeth member. p p i 5. An attachment for a doll head havinga mouth opening, saidattachment comprising a .materialcontinuing from the margin thereof V i being bentto constitute holding means for tongue member having a portion shaped to represent a humanjtongue intended to be 550- 011 sitioned within'the mouth opening of the head, said member havingother portions disposed toengage against parts of thehead adjacent the mouth opening .co-operative withsaid parts to define theposition of the tongue with respect to the mouth opening preparatoryto fastening the member within the head, and fastening means for said member comprising bendable tangs formed inte- H gral with said member bendable into impaled relation within the material of the head said tangs being disposed with respect tothe remainder ofsaid member so asto stand out of engagement with the head during the prelini-inary engagement -.of the last "mentioned I portions of the member against the head. 1
In testimony whereof IafiiX my signature. X SAMUEL MARCUS.
