The mine car illustrated in the drawings is shown as having a bottom comprising a door 58 which extends from one end sill to the adjacent axle, a door 59 which extends between the two axles, and a door 60 which extends from the second axle to the adjacent or otherend sill." Each door comprises a plate dished slightly towards its longitudinal center and provided with upwardly projecting'flanges on all edges. The door 58 is pivotally connected to the end sill 2 by hinges 62 and, in closed position, has its hin e edge flange projecting in back of the. inclined portion 24 of the end sheet 18 an its free edge flange projecting in back of the offset flange 57 of the hood sheet 50. To support the door 58 in closed position, the free edge of the door is provided with a plurality of projecting lugs or fingers 64 secured thereto and engaging on shoulders 65 formed v on latches 66 pivotally mounted at their upper ends on pins 67 inserted in openings in the vertical portion 56 of hood sheet 50 and in straps or brackets'68 attached to the inclined portion 55 of hoodsheet 50. The latches 66 are connected for simultaneous operation by a link69 which extends between and is pivotally connected to both latches 66. Projecting'upwardly from the link 69 is a guide bracket 70 having an opening in which 71 whic bracket 72 attached to the vertical portion 56 of hood sheet '50. Surrounding the rod 71 and confined between the brackets 70 and i 72 is a spring 73 which holds the latches 66 the flanges at their hinge edges'extending in back of the offset flanges 57 of the hoodsheets 49. The flange atthe free edge of door 59 extends in back of the flange 57 of a hood sheet 50 while the flange at the free edge of-door 60 extends in back of the offset flange 28 on the end sheet 18. Y I
The door 59 is supported in closed position'by latches the same as described in con-- nection with door 58 supported from the hood sheet 50 and connected by a link 69 in the same manner while the latches 66 which support the door 60 are the same except for a difference in length in order to permit of attaching to the end plate 18 the brackets 68 which support one end of the pins 67 which carry the latches 66, the

In Figs. 8, 9 and,10,'there is shown an other type of car; in this instance a hopper car having a plurality of hoppers and comprising draft sills lQl-fwhich:extend to and are secured to the end slope sheets 103 by angles 105 and flanged side sills 107 to which are attached the hopper side sheets 109 and the Z-bar side osts 111. To the lower portions of the we s of the posts 111 and to the bottom flanges of the side sills 107 are attached transversely extending channels 113 positioned in oppositely arranged pairs with their flanges projecting outwardly and with the channels nearest the car ends or end channels connected to the draft sills 101 by flanged gussets 115. The channels 113 of each pair are spaced longitudinally of the car, the full extent of the hopper opening, and-to the outer channel of each pair is attached the lower edge of the adjacent end slo e sheet 103. The chan nels 113 and the liopper side sheets 109 define the hopper openings, the hopper side sheets being attached to the end slope sheets 103 by angles 117 and to the channels 113 by angles 119. The lower edges of the ho per side sheets are bent to extend vertical y downwardly and are attached to flanged plates 121 which extend'between the pairs of channels 113 and are secured thereto. Extending between-the hopper side sheets 109 and having flanges at their ends secured to thehopper side sheets are slope sheets 123 which have their upper edges secured together and their lower edges secured to the center channels 113, the slope sheets 123 forming a cross ridge extending between the hopper side sheets 109.
To the end channel of one pair of channels 113 and to the center channel of the other pair are attached hinge brackets 125 to which doors 127 similar to door 58 of Fig. 1, are pivotally connected. To the other channels 113 of each pair of channels are attached brackets 129 in which are pivotally mounted the latches 131, the latches13l engaging with lugs 133 on the doors 127 to retain the doors in closed position. The latches 131 on each channel 113 are joined for simultaneous operation by a link 135 pivotally connected to each latch 131. One latch 131 of each pair is connected by a link 137 to a crank arm 139 carried by a shaft 141 journaled in bearing 143 carried by the channels113, the links 137 being pivotally connected to the latches 131 and having pin and slot connections with the crank arms 139.
To operate the latches 131 to release the doors 127, the shaft 141 is provided with a crank arm 145 which projects through a guide slot 147 in a plate 149 carried by the side posts 111 and extends sufficiently beyond the car side to be engaged by a track ramp- (not shown). To insure the latches 131 being returned to door locking position, springs 151 are confined between brackets 153 carried by links 135 and brackets 155 carried by channels 113 and mounted upon pins 157 carried by the brackets 153 and 155.
The structure shown in Figs. 8 to 10 is operated in the same manner as the structure shown in the other figures, the arm 145 being raised by engagement with a track ramp as the car moves along and through arms 139 and links 137 operating the latches .131, against the resistance of the springs 151, to release the doors 127. When the arm 145 passes off the ramp, the springs 151 return thelatches to locking position. When the doors are raised to closed position, the lugs 133 will engage the inclined lower faces 159 of the latches 131, shifting the latches 131 to permit the lugs 133 to pass the latches whereupon the sprin s 151 return the latches to engaging position eneath the lugs 133. During the closin of the doors the pin and slot connections etween the links 137 and crank arms 139 permits movement of thelatches 131 inde endently of the arms 139 and shaft141.
