My improvement relates to mine or similar cars having a middle, longitudinal disside structures side of said longitudinal discharge opening,

The latch mechanism is arranged for automatic releasing by engagementwith a cam stationary beside the track at the tipple or other place at which the load is to be discharged. On the track, between the track rails is a cam positioned to successively engage the open doors and raise them into the closed position, than the closed position, during the forward movement of the car. The latch mechanism makes its engagement with the rear door automatically during the upward movement of that door for its closing. Then the doors are firmly held ready to receive a new load. In United States Patent, N 0. 1,512,059, granted to Hugh W. Sanford, October 21, 1924, a single door is substituted for the plurality of doors shown in the above-mentioned Patent N 0. 1,268,390.
In both the above-mentioned patents, body side walls rise from the side sills. These walls or a little higher are stationary and upright far enough to althese walls must --car body without limiting them to a slant which would allow the lading to slide into the space between the side sills or the space controlled by the bottom door or doors.
Accordingly my improvement includes-.- (1) a bottom door or doors constituting a main bottom and (2) body side sections or structures having auxiliary bottoms or floors too-low, when in the normal or lading positiou, to discharge lading' by sliding into the main bottom opening.
These body side structures are made shiftable to permit discharge their lading into the middle, longitudinal discharge opening bv' sliding. In the particular structure illustrated by the accompanying drawings, these side structures are hi need on lines parallel to the side lines of the discharge opening; and provision, is made for automatically turning these side strut tures on their hinges whenthe car arrives at or is passing the tipple or other discharge capacity. But,

The side sills are shown of channel form; but it is to be understood that they may be of any suitable form.
In the form shown in the drawings, the end structures, D1, comprise, as a main element, a. late metal member having an up: right or ack web, D2, a lower outward-directed flange, D3, and an upper outwarddirected flange, D4. Other members of said structure are similar to the structure of Figs. 1 2"and 11, inclusive, of United States Patent, No. 1,486,547, granted to Hugh W. Sanford, March 11, 1924. Attachment between the side sills and the end structure is made by means of angle members, D5, having one arm riveted to the inner face of the web, D2, and having its other arm resting between the flanges of the adjacent side sill and against the upright web of said sill and riveted to said web, as is described in said patent, No. 1,486,547.
The space between the side sills and the end structures is to be regarded as the discharge opening; and that opening is normally closed by the shiftable bottom. In the form shown by these drawings, three bottom doors, E, E1 and E2, are usedjto normally close said opening and those doors constitute the main or middle bottom of the car.
The rear. door, E, has its forward end hinged to the rear axle, C, by means of hinge straps, C2, surrounding the axle and suitably secured to the underfacc of the door. The second or middle door, E1, has lts forward end hinged to the forward axle, C, by means of hinge straps, C2, surrounding said axle and suitably joined to the lower face of said door. The forward door, E2, has its forward". edge hinged to a transverse horizontal hinge rod, C3, by means of hinge straps, C2, surrounding the hinge rod and suitably secured to the lower face of said door. The ends of the hinge rod rest in the side sills, D. At their side edges, the doors have upright flanges, E3, overlapping the inner faces of the adjacent side sills, D.
At each end of the car, two brackets, F rise from the upper flange, D4, of the end structure, at opposite sides distant from the upright middle longitudinal plane of the car. Each bracket has a lower horizontal flange, F1, resting on and riveted to the upper end structure flange, D4. And each bracket has at its upper end a zontal fla nge, F2, on which rests a horizontal frame end rail, G, extending outward to the rail are made uni-- tary, these rails being shown of channel of and equally horiform and the flanges of the channels being cut away where the rails are bent at the corners of the frame thus formed.
At each end of'the car an end wall plate,

Midway between the ends of e end rail, G, the joint in said rail is overlapped by a reinforcing plate, G2, and rivets or bolts extend through said plate and the rail, G, and the end rails, G, and the side rails, G1, constitute a second or upper frame.
From each side frame rail, G1, downward to the adjacent side sill, D, the inner face of the end wall plate, H, is overlapped by a reinforcing bar, H1, and riveted to said bar. A gusset plate, H2, overlaps the outer face of the plate, H, and is secured to said plate by a part of the rivets which extend through the bar, H1, and the wall plate, H. The gusset plate extends downward to the adjacent angle member, D5, and has a foot, H3, lean ing against the adjacent member and riveted thereto.
By the means last'above described, the end wall plates and the second frame formed by the end frame rails, G, and the side frame .rails, G1, are'rigidly supported.
, When the doors are free and the load has been discharged, the forward movement of the car brings the doors successively against the door-raising cam, A3, whereby the doors are raised into the closed position the rear' door being then latched, as next described.
As a part of the latch' mechanism for the rear door, a standard, I, rises from the up r face of the upper end structure, D1, the standard having a horizontal foot, I2,
of said flange and riveted or bolted thereto.
The upper end'ofsaid standard extends to-- ward'the ad acent end'wall plate, H, and then downward. An approximately horizontal latch arm, I2, rests in the space formed by thus folding thestandardJ. A pintle or bolt, I3, extends horizontally through the two parts of the standard and through said arm and the adjacent part of the end wall plate, H. Thus the arm, I2, may rock on said pintle. Said arm extends through a slot, F3, in the adjacent bracket, F, the slot being long enough in the up and down direction to allow said arm to move up and down. A hook, I4, extends downward from the arm, 12, in position to engage a wrist, E4, on the rear edge of the rear door, E, when the arm,

Thus, after pass- I ing the cam, I5, the arm will automatically move into its lower position. and'return the hook intoposition to again engage the wrist, E4, when the rear door is again raised.
The lower end of the hook, I4, has a slantingedge, I6, against which the wrist, E4, bears during its upward movement while the ath of said arm. The slot, F3, et, F, is preferably extended rear door is being raised. (Fig. 3a). Thus said wrist pushes the hook sidewise, until said wrist is above the point of the hook. Then the weight of the arm, I2, moves said arm downward, and that moves the hook toward and under the wrist, E4. The weight of the arm, I2, may be made sufiicient to effect this movement; but the drawings show a contracting coiled spring, I7, having one end attached to the hook and having its other end attached to the bracket, F, which-is the farther from the arm, 12.. The force of this spring is added to the gravity action on the arm, I2,to move said arm and the hook, I4, into rest position.
The body side structures or extensions are duplicates. Hence a description of one will serve for both. Each such structurehas a floor, J, resting on the upper flange of the adjacent side sill, D, and extending thence outward horizontally approximately to the plane of the inner face of the adj accnt second frame side rail, G1. From said floor approximately in said plane a wall, J1, extends upwardover the inner face of the side rail, G1. An
outward-directed flange, J2, formed on the upper edge of the wall, J1, normally rests on the upper edge of the frame side rail,'G1, whereby one support for the side extension of the car is formed. Hinges, J3, are atadjacent side sill, D, and the adjacent upper face of the extension floor, J, whereby the extension may turn or rock on the axial line of those hinges. The drawings show three such hinges applied to the extension.
When this extension is in normal oriworking condition, the flange, J2, restson the adjacent-second frame side rail, G 1. Then the only motion on said hinges may be a turning upward, the flange, J2, rising from the rail. G1.
Further support is given the side extension by engagement with the oblique reinforcing bar, H1, lreadv described as lying against the inner face of the end wall plates, H; For this a-reinforcing bar, J4, is applied to the outer'face of the. triangular end wall, J5,

Thus the body extension section has three supports (1) the hinges, J3; (2) G1; and (3) the reinforcing bar, H1. The car wheels, B, are hi her than the upper face'of the side sills, D. Hence the wheels extend through the plane of the body extension floor, J. That requires forming openings, J6, in the floor, J, to receive the wheels. A hood, J7, extends over each wheel and has flanges. J8, resting on and secured to the floor, J, and an upright flange, J9, resting against and secured to the inner face of the wall, J1.
To the lower face of the floor, J, approxib mately midway between its-ends, and near the upright wall, J1, is a downward-directed bracket, J10, which supports a roller, J 11, in position to ride upward on the cam, J 12, the side of'the track at the tipple or other place for discharge, said cam being in the path of said roller and said cam being twisted or deflected to keep in engagement with said roller while the roller is being carried upward and sidewise during the turning of the side extension.
By means of this cam said extension is to be tilted sufliciently floor, J, to an angle which will allow the coal or other lading resting thereon to slide from that fioor and into the discharge space between the side sills, D. I
It is to be understood that the cam, 15, is to the cam, I2, for the release of the bottom doors, E, E1 and E2, before the rollers, J 11, reach the cams, J 12, in order that the bottom doors may be discharging before the side structures or sections are lifted. It is also to be noted that the body side extensions are preferably independent of each other so that a cam, J12, is needed at each side of the rail track.
- As soon as the rollers, J11, are allowed to move downward from the cam, J 12, the side extensions can move downward bv the action of gravity, that movement being on the hinges, J3.
In Fig. 14, there is shown a modification, whereinthe side frame rail, G1, is placed higher than in the form illustrated by the preceding figures of the drawings. A metal plate or sheet, G3, is supported on the rail, G1, and extends downward from said rail. The upper edge of said plate is extended outward horizontally to rest on the upper edge of the rail. Said plate is secured to the rail Along its lower edge the plate.- G3, is turned inward to'form a flange, G4. The extension wall, J1, extends upward only far enough to allow its flange, J2, to normally overlap the flange, G4.

The fixed parts of the car may be regarded as the car body. Those parts are the side sills, D, and the end structures, D1, and the end wall plates, H, and the gusset plates, H2, and the upper end rails, G, and the upper side rails, G1, and other minor parts.

Thus it may be saidthat the side structures extend downward from the upper part and outward from the lower part of the car body into position to meet the cams, J 12, during the forward movement of the car. Or it may be said that the car body has at each side a lateral and'downward opening into which a side structure extends in position to meet the cam, J 12, during the travel of the car. Or it maybe said that the side structure is so supported on the car body as to be exposed for engagement with lifting means placed along the rail track. v

In mine cars it is advantageous to have the track wheels accessible for lubrication and for removal and replacing. In my improved car, although the side structures, when they are at rest, reach outward over the wheels and surround the upper parts of the wheels, the wheels are completely exposed and readily accessible when the side structures are turned upward. Thus, when the car is empty, access may be had to the wheels after turning the side structures upward.

In a railwav car of the kind described, a horizontal main frame comprising side members and end members, wheels and axles supporting said frame, the wheels being outside said side members, and a lading section supported substantially at the outer side of the upright plane of each main frame side memberand hinged adjacent said side member for tilting at the outer side of said plane for discharge of lading into the space etween said side members and said lading sections extendingover said, wheels when the lading sections are in normal position and exposing said wheels for accessibility when said sections are tilted upward.
24. In a railway car of the kind described, a horizontal main frame comprising side members and end members, wheels andaxles supporting said frame, side said side members, and a lading section supported substantially at the outer side of the upright plane of each main frame side member and hinged adjacent said side member for tilting at the outer side of said plane for discharge of lading into the space between said'side members and said lading the wheels being outsections hooded to extend over the upper r ing said frame,
' said lower frame and comprising parts of the wheels when the lading sections are in normal POSltlOIl and exposing said wheels for accessibility when said sections are tilted upward.

In a railway car of the lgind described, a horizontal frame comprising side members and end members, wheels and axles supporting said frame, the wheels being outside said side members, and a tiltable lading section at each side of and hinged to thev side members and extending over said Wheels when the lading sections are in normal position and exposing said wheels for accessibility when said sections are tilted upward. 26. In a railway car of the kind described,
a horizontal frame comprising side members i and end members, wheels and axles supportthe wheels being outside said and a tiltable lading section and hinged to the side memside members, at each slde of hers and hooded to extend over the upper parts of the wheels when the lading sections are in normal position and exposing said wheels for accessibility when said sections are tilted upward.

In a railway car of the kind described, the combination of axles, wheels supporting the axles, a horizontal rectangular rigid lower frame comprising side members and end members approximately in a horizontal plane cutting said wheels, a rigid second frame wider and from said lower frame and over-hanging side members and transverse end members, means in-. termediate the ends of said second frame and the corresponding ends of said lower frame for rigidly supporting the second frame on the lower and said second frame and said intermediate supporting means constitute a strong rigid structure adapted to support lading floors and lading walls, and lading'fioors and lading walls applied to. said rigid structure.
28. In a railway car of the kind described, the combination of a horizontal strong rectangular lower frame comprising side members and end members, axles supportingcthe lower frame, wheels located outside said lower frame and supporting said axles, a second strong frame wider than and supported by said lower frame and comprising side members and end members whereby said lower frame and said second frame constitute a strong rigid structure adapted to support lading floors and walls, and side ladingsupporting means each comprising a floor and an upright wall rising from the outer part of said floor and said floor being in a plane cutting the adjacent wheels and the inner edge of said side lading supporting means being supported by the adjacent side member of the lower frame and the outer part of said side lading supporting located higher than and spacedv means being supportedby the adjacent side member of the second frame.
