An object of the invention comprehends a locking element adapted for insertion within thatportion of the handle within the tool head.

Another object of the invention contemplates a handle engaging portion carried by the locking element adapted for engagement with the handle to prevent displacement of the tool head therefrom.

More specifically stated, the tool head is provided with an opening within which the handle engaging portion is received.

With the above and other objects in view, the invention, further consists of the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described,

illustrated in the accompanying drawingsand pointed out in the appended claim.

Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates a well known type of adz having ahead 11 upon one end and a cutting blade 12 upon the other. The adz is provided with a tapered and depending sleeve portion 13 which is adapted to receive the enlarged tapered head 14 of a handle member 15.

In carrying out theiinvention, I provide a. locking element in the nature of a bolt 16 adapted to be passed through the sides of the sleeve portion 13 through registering openings. 1'2 and 18 and an elongated slotted portion 19 in .the enlarged head 14 of the'handle15..

The opening 18 being larger in circumference than the opening 17 to accommodate lock washers 20 adapted to engage the head 14 of the handle member 15gwithin the sleeve member 13 in the manner as best illustrated in Figures 2 and 3 of the drawings. As a matter of choice a disk member '21 may be employed instead of the lock washers 20.

In Figure 5 of the drawings, I have illustrated a modified form of locking element in the nature of a bolt member 16 which is provided with a rectangular shaped head 22 adapted to be received within a correspondingly shaped opening, not shown, in one side of the sleeve member 13. Obviously from the illustration in Figure 3 of the drawings, the customary fastening devices for the opposite ends of the bolts 16 and 16' are employed.

In Figures 6 and 7 of the drawings, I have illustrated an adz of a type similar to the adz 10 but which is not provided with a head. It is my purpose in this form of the invention to provide both a locking means for a handle member within the sleeve for the adz and in addition to provide a hammer head upon the locking element whereby new look ing elements could be replaced to secure a new hammer head without incurring the expense of buying an entire-adz. Such looking element is in the nature of a shank 23 adapted to be passed through the sleeve portion of the adz and to anchor the innermost threaded end thereof within a threaded socket24. A disk portion 25, carried by the shank 23, is adapted for reception within an enlarged opening 26in the "sleeve portion of the adz and which is adapted for engagement with the immediate portion of the handle therein. A tapered hammer head 27 being extended from a wrench engaging portion 28 in advance of the disk member 25.

It is to be noted that in each form of my invention, the primary object is to engage that portion of the handle member extended Within the sleeve portion of the adz whereby the usual occurrence of adz heads flying ofi will be overcome.

The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction, and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall Within the scope of the appended claim. Having described the invention, what is claimed is:
