This invention relates to headed tools, such as hatchets and the like, and has for an ob ject to provide an improved tool of this type which will have an improved and simpli- 'lied construction which is much stronger than the usual construction of these types of tools, but still will be as well balanced and desirable to use.

Vith the foregoing and other objects in View, I have devised the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, similar reference characters being employed throughout the various figures to indicate corresponding elements. In this drawing Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a hatchet constructed according to my invent-ion.

In the construction shown the hatchet head 10 includes the cutting edge 11 on one end and the hammer 12 provided with a claw 13 on the other end. Forged integra-l with the head is a shank 14 for the handle. This shank extends throughout the entire length of the handle and is substantially Lshaped in cross section with a central plate or web 15 and flanges 16 extending laterally from the opposite edges thereof and from both sides of the web, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4.. For the outer portion of the length of this shank the space between the flanges is filled with a pair of cheek pieces 17, preferably of wood or a suitable non-metallic material. rlhese cheek pieces are of a length to form a good grip and they fit snugly between the flanges against the web of the shank. On their outer surfaces they are rounded as indicated in Fig. 4, to form a continuation of the outer rounded surfaces of the flanges 16, and to give a general oval shape to the grip so that it will fit properly in the hand. shank by suitable rivets 18, giving a rigid, substantially unitary structure. At their free ends the cheek pieces and shank are preferably projected outwardly somewhat as shown at 19 to give a sort of rounded enlargement or flange at the end to further improve the grip and prevent the tool flying from the users hand.

It will be apparent from this description that I have produced a tool of this character which is of a very strong and rigid construction. The specific shape of the shank gives it great strength in all directions and particularly in the plane of the head where it is most needed without interfering with its attractive appearance, and as it is forged in one piece with the head there is absolutely no chance of the handle working loose either by drying out or for any other reason, and there is, therefore, no chance of the head flying off. Furthermore, as the shank with its I-shaped cross section extends throughout the entire length'of the handle there is no weak point whatever in the handle, while the cheek pieces fill out the sides and provide as desirable a grip and as easy a grip on the hand as if the handle were made entirely of wood.

Having thus set forth the invention, what I claim is 1. A tool comprising a striking head and a shank including a handle portion forged in one piece with the head, the shank including the handle portion being of substantially I-shape in cross section throughout substantially its entire length with a web plate extending in the plane of the head and flanges projecting laterally in opposite directions from the side edges of the plate, cheek pieces fitting between the flanges on opposite sides of the plate to form a grip with the handle portion of the shank, and means for securing the cheek pieces to said handle portion of the shank.
