6 Claims. (01. 30-340) This invention relates to knives, particularly to hunting, fighting, and similar knives, provided with a guard or protector for the hands of the user, and it has for its main object to provide such a guard or protector of a novel, simple, and efficient construction.

Another object of my invention is to provide a guard or protector of the mentioned character, which may be easily applied to any existing knives of the mentioned type.

Still other objects of this invention will be apparent as the specification of the same proceeds, and, among others, I may mention, to provide a protector or guard for knives, as indicated, which will be inexpensive but still attractive in appearance and reliable in use, and which may be combined with means to provide a better grip on the handle of the knife.

Figs. 5 and 6 are fragmentary views to illustrate a modified form of my protector or guard.

Referring now to the drawing more in detail, by characters of reference, the numeral ID indicates a knife in general, having the blade portion II and the handle portion, generally indicated by the numeral l2, and being composed in this embodiment of similar but oppositely arranged left hand and right hand halves l3 and M, respectively, a shank portion l5 of the blade Il may be extended along the handle 12 and the two halves of the handle may be secured thereon, as by the means Hi.

In practising my invention, I provide a plate like member I! of any appropriate material, preferably metal, and of any appropriate shape, an elliptical form for the same being shown in the drawing, and I provide an axial slot [8 therein of the same size and shape as the bottom portion [9 of the blade ll, right at the top end of the handle.

The top end of the handle is formed into a plane, generally indicated by the numeral 20, and having the two halves a and 20b on the respective left hand and right hand members of the handle. Guard plate I! also will have two apertures 2|, preferably with conical walls, for the purpose to be described presently.

When a knife, having the handle of the described construction, is to be provided with my novel, simple guard or protector, the guard plate I! will he slid down over the blade II from the .top Ila therefrom, downwardly, as indicated by the arrow I Id.

The blade riding in the slot l8 until the plate I! will arrive to the bottom of the blade and will rest on the surface 20 at the top of the handle.

The handle usually is formed of wood, bone, or plastic material, while metal may sometimes be used for it.

In each half of the handle a screw threaded hole 22 may be provided into which a securing screw 23 may be threaded through the apertures or holes 2| in the guard plate ll, a head 23a of the screw resting on the conical sides of the aperture 2|.

It will be seen that in this manner any knife may be provided with a reliable, attractive guard, in a simple, inexpensive manner, easily and expeditiously.

Blade II and the shank l5, both may have inclined side surfaces each being heavier in the rear, indicated by the numerals Ho and I51), and narrower in the front, coming to a sharp cutting edge in the blade I I, as indicated at I I0, and the slot I8 may be shaped accordingly, having a wider back [81) and a narrow front I80.

In combination with, and to aid in the purpose of the guard I1, I may also provide a plurality of indentations 24 in the front ends of the two handle halves l3 and I4, and an indentation 25 right under the guard I! in the back ends of the two halves as well as of the shank I 5, said indentation 24 giving the fingers of the user a better grip, while the indentation 25 is for the thumb of the user, partly resting against the guard plate I!.

In the fragmentary Figs. 5 and 6, I illustrate a modified form of my guard plate Ila. wherein the same is bent along the axis of the slot l8 forming two sides llb and H0, at a desired angle to one another. The handle halves l3 and M will have similarly inclined top surfaces I30. and Mia and each securing screw 23, of course, will also be inserted into the handle in an inclined position, as indicated in Fig. 6.

While I have shown and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that changes and variations may be resorted to in the details of construction and in the combinations of parts, and I want to reserve my rights to all such changes and variations which are within the spirit of the herein specification and in the scop of the claims hereunto appended.

What I claim as new, is:

1. In a knife, having a comparatively heavy handle and a blade projecting therefrom, a guard comprising a substantially rigid, resisting plate member having a slot therein by which the same may be caused to slide down on the blade, an appropriate surface provided on the top of the handle at the two sides of the blade to rest said plate member thereon, and means to secure said plate to said handle when resting on said top surface thereof.

2. In a knife, having a comparatively heavy handle and a blade projecting therefrom, a guard comprising a plate member having a slot therein by which the same may be caused to slide down on the blade, an appropriate surface provided on the top of the handle at the two sides of the blade to rest said plate member thereon, and means to secure said plate to said handle when resting on said top surface thereof, said means tosecure the plate on said handle comprising apertures in 'said plate and securing elements passing through said apertures into the material of the handle.

In a knife, having a comparatively heavy handle and a blade projecting therefrom, a guard comprising a plate member having a slot therein by which the same may be caused to slide down on the blade, an appropriate surface provided on the top of the handle at the two sides of the blade to rest said plate member thereon and means to secure the same on said surface, said plate being bent along th axis of said blade slot to form inclined sides for the same, and said surfaces on the top of the handle also being formed with two sides of identical inclinations.

4. In a combination guard and grip for a knife, having a comparatively heavy handle and a blade projecting therefrom, a substantially rigid, resisting plate member having a slot therein by which the same may be caused to slide down on the blade, an appropriate surface provided on the top of the handle at the two sides of the blade to rest said plate member thereon, and means to secure said plate to said handle when resting on said top surface thereof, a plurality of indentations in the front side of the handle for the fingers of the user, and an indentation in the rear side of the handle adjacent to said guard plate for the thumb of the user.

5. A combined guard and grip for a knife, having a comparatively heavy handle and a blade projecting therefrom, and a transverse substantially rigid, resisting guard member on the top of the handle, a plurality of indentations in the front side of the handle for the fingers of the user, and an indentation in the rear side of the handle adjacent to said guard for the thumb of the user.

6. In a knife, as set forth in claim 2, said securing elements being in the form of screws threaded into the material of the handle.
