Description

the inwardly bent portionof the roon sheets Y Patented sept. 9, 1930 UNITED STATES 6F-Fife f EDWIN G. FRANCK, or DETROIT, MIcIIIGANgssIeNoR ToRUToiIINscARrROIiNG COMPANY, oF DETROIT, MIorIIGAN,5A ooRPoRATIoNoF IJIIII-JTWAIE4` i GAR Application iled lNtnreinber 21","192'1 This invention 'relates to car roofs andV more particularly to that type of roof in whichmetal roofing sheets are employed.
The invention relates more particularl to 5 the connection between the substructure o the car and the roofing sheets at the eaves and has as its objects to simplify, render more efficient and improve generally constructions ofthis character.
The several objects, advantages and novel details of construction of this invention will be mademore apparent as this description y proceeds, especially when considered in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein: Figure 1 isa fragmentary top plan vie of a car roof constructed in accordance with my invention, and
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken substantially on the plane indicated by line 2 2 iny Figure 1.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings wherein like reference characters indicate like parts it will be noted that there is illustrated a side plate 10 to which fascia plates 11 are connected by means of bolts 13 which also act tosecure in place side sheathing 14.` The sub-structure comprises `carlines 15 and purlines 16 and thecustomary ridge pole (not shown). The metal roofing sheets 17 are supported upon this sub-structure and are provided Awith upstanding side edge flanges 18, the joint between adjacent roofing sheets being covered and weather-proofed by transverse caps V19 secured in; place by `means of bolts 20. i v A The eaves end of each roofing sheet` is bent to Vform an inwardly .extending portion or flange 21 terminating in an upwardlyextending projection or flange 22. Extending under is a main lflashing strip 23. Thisv ashing strip is provided with a return-bent portion 24 which extends back over t-he inwardly extending portion 21 of the roofing sheets and terminates in a downwardly extending portion or flange 25. This downwardly extending flange 25 overlaps the upwardly extending flange 22 ofthe roofing sheet and acts as a stop to oppose and limit outward movementi of vthe roofing sheet."` `Thisl construction i permits of a freedom of movement "of the roof- 'ing sheets-while preventing the same form moving outwardly'away `from the` ridge of the! car. i The construction furtherf permits the; flashing strips tomove freely i'nmjah` outward direction in consequenceof-a-` Vbovvir'ig of theside plates;v The'referencecharacter 26 indicates dashing strips" arranged atthe joints ofth'e main flashingstrips 23. y l
1 The eaves `end of `each transverse" cap 19 is' provided with "an inwardly bent portion 2,7 which extends within the space 28 betweenthe inwardly bent portion i 21 of'tliefroofing rsheet andiiashing strip 23. 7 This construction "affords` means` for* satisfactorily weather-proofing the joint between adj acent* roofingfshets at'theeaves.` 'l l 1 .Whiletheinventionhas been illustratedias applied tosteel frame cars it will be immediately apparent to those skilled` in this-Fart that it'may be applied with equal "facility "to Vwood frame `cars "and furthermore that' obvious changes and modifications in the` specific details herein ill-ustratedinayfbe 'made as "come '-withini the purvew of the {accompany-ing claims. a.: 11. y

In a car roof, the combination with a sub-structure, of a Vroofing sheet arranged thereover, the eaves end of said roofing sheet being ent to form an vinturned portion terminating in an upstanding flange and a flashing str a return bent portion extending under and over said inturned portion, said return-bent portion terminating'in a downwardly ex-` tending flange engaging -said V upstanding flange to limit the outward movement of said roofing sheet. f l
.5. In a c r roof, the combination with a sub-structur of roofing sheets arranged thereover, thV eaves ends of said roofing sheets being fl med with inturned portions terminating in )standing flanges, a flashing strip having a r urn bent portion extending under said intur ed portionsin spaced relation thereto and over said inturned portions, said return-bent portion terminating in a downwardly extending flange engaging said upstandin g flanges and joint caps for the side edges of said roofing sheets having portions extending into thev space between said inturned portions and flashing strip.
6.*In a car roof, the combination with a sub-structure7 of a `.roofing sheet arranged thereover, the eaves end of said roofing sheet being provided with an upstanding substantially vertical flange and a flashing strip formed throughout its length with a downwardly extending substantially vertical flange having an extended area o'f engagement with said upstanding flange7 for the purpose described. y
7. In a car roof, the combination with a sub-structure, of a roofing sheet arranged thereover, a flashing strip, the eaves end of said roofing sheet and said flashing strip being provided respectively with substantially vertically extending parallel overlapping flanges adapted for Substantial surface engagement with one another, as and for the purpose set forth. i
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
