The invention relates to car roofs of the flexible all-metal type and has more particular reference to the construction applicable to cars which are provided with end doors. l With this type of car it is necessary to provide a full height dooropening whichv in turn necessitates an abnormal construction of end pla-te for the car roof fra-Ine. This end plate is in the form of an invert-ed channel beam which is sufiicientlyvelevated above the plane of the roof to give the necessary strength without trespassing on the required clearance for the door opening. Thus to apply the flexible roof to this type of car I have devised a construction as hereinafter set forth.

The usual construction of flexible all-metal car roofs comprises a skeleton roof frame composed of carlines and purlines upon which are laid rooting sheets having upstanding flanges at their sides and ridge end. Between these sheets are ridge caps, transverse caps and junction caps which serve to hold the sheets down upon the roof frame and to thoroughly weatherproof the same. At the end of the car it is usual to provide a. sheet having a down-turned flange which overlaps the end plate of the car roof frame. IVhere, however, the car is provided with an end door and a specially constructed end plate, the usual construction of roof is not applicable.
As shown in detail, A are the side plates of the roof frame and B is the specially constructed end plate for the end door opening. This end plate is of inverted channel cross section having'on its inner side a laterally extending flange C which conforms generally to the slope of the roof. Adjacent to this flange is an upwardly extending portion D which at the ridge extends only a slight distance above the roofing sheets but at the eaves and intermediate the eaves and the ridge is a greater distance above the plane of the sheets. The lower` edge of the wall E is also preferably reinforced by a Z-bar F which extends vinwardly therefrom. The laterally extending flange C on the inner side of the channel portion is slightly below the plane of the roofing sheet and extends to the sides of the car where it is attached to the `side plates A. VThis flange is preferably flared adJacent to the side, plates as indicated at C toform a gusset terminating in a down turned flange C2 which is riveted to the web of the sideplate A. The ridge vpole H is supported at its end upon the center portion of the flange C and vpurlines I are supported upon brackets I alsosecured to the flange C.
vAs has been stated, it is usual with flexible car roofs to have an end roofing sheet which is bent downward over the end plate of the roof frame. Inasmuch however, as the end plateB extends upward above the plane of the car roof, such a construction of end sheet can not be used and I have substituted therefor the following: J is a roofing sheetv which extends between the end plate B and the next adjacent carline K. This sheet is pref` erably supported upon the ridge pole H and the filler strips L on the purlines I, together with wooden supporting strips M Von the flange C.. The filler strips L are preferably inclined so as to pitch the sheet slightly down-` ward towardsthe end of the car. This is for thepurpose of directing the water shed Vfrom the sheet towards the end plate B where it is over the flange C and gusset C. The said sheet is preferably panned to form upstanding flanges J iat its sidesand at the ridge with a downturned eaves flange J 2. A portion of the latter overlies the downturned fiange C2 of the endplate while another portion J3 is Vprovided with a return bent flange the flange C prevents access by the water shed vfrom the other portion of the sheet.
For weatherproofing between the sheet J and the end plate B there is provided a cap N which embraces the channel portion of said end plate and is riveted or otherwisesecured thereto. On its inner side this cap has a depending flange N spaced from the portion D of the end plate and also from the upstanding flange J so as to permit limited freedom of movement of said sheet. A laterally extending flange N2 at the lower edge of the flange N bears on the sheet and serves to hold it down as well as to weatherproof the same. On its outer side the cap N has a downturned flange N3 which overlaps a facie O secured to the portion E. P is a ridge Acap which embraces the upstanding ridge flanges of the sheet J and the cap N and-fashioned to embrace this ridge cap P, being weatherproofed by a packing P formed of canvas. or other suitable material. The weatherprooff ing for the opposite .edge of the sheet J is of the usual construction comprising a cap Q for embracing the carline K.
With .the construction as vdescribed the sheet J will have the same degree of flexibility as the other roofing sheets and will form a weatherproof joint withtheend plate B. Due to the fact that the plate is inclined slightly toward this end plate the greater portion of the water shed by this plate will be directed over the flanges C and C thereby being prevented from finding access to the interior of the car. a
What I claim as my invention is:

The combination with a railway car having an end door, of anxarched end plate above said door having a portion extending above thel plane of the roofing sheets with a laterally extending flange on its inner side below the plane of said sheets, a carline, a roofing sheet between saidrcarline and end plate having a portion overlapping said flange with an upstanding flange adjacent to the upwardly extending portion Vof said. plate and a weatherproofing cap embracing the upstanding portion of said plate and said upstanding flange.
,2. The. combination with a railway car having an end door,of an arched end plate above said door having a portion extending upward above the plane of the roofing sheet-v with a laterally extending flange Yon its Ainner side below the plane of said sheet, said flange extending to the eaves of the car and secured to the side plate thereof, a carline and a roofing sheet intermediate said carline and end plate having an upstanding .flange adj acent to the upwardly extending portion of said end'plate and overlapping said laterallyextending flange,` said sheet being inclinedl longitudinally'of the car to direct ther water( shed therefrom over said flange, and aV weather-proofing cap embracing the upwardly extending portion of said end plate and upstanding flange of said sheet.
3. The combination with a railway car lhaving an end door, of an arched end plate above said door and having a portion of inverted channel cross section extending upward above the plane of the roofing sheet with a laterally extending flange on its inner side below the plane of said sheet, said flange extending to t-he side of the car and being enlarged in width adjacent to said side to form a gusset secured to the side plate of the car, a carline and a roofing sheet between Said carline and end plate provided with upstanding'flanges at its opposite sides, a portion of said sheet overlying the flange on said end plate and provided with a downturned eaves flange, a weatherproofing cap embracing said end plate and upstanding flange of the sheet and a support for said sheet inclined longitudinally of the car to direct the water shed therefrom over the flange of said end plate.
4. The combination with a railway car having an end door, of an arc-hed end plate above said door having a portion of inverted channel cross section extending upward above the plane of the roofing sheet with a laterally extending flange on its inner side below the plane of the sheet, said flange extending to the side plate of the car and being secured thereto, a carline and a roofing sheet between said carline and end plate, said sheet being panned to form upstanding flanges at its sides and at the ridge, a ridge cap for embracing the ridge flange of said sheet and transverse caps for embracing the side flanges of said sheet, one of said caps also embracing the upwardly extending portions of said end plate and the ridgeV cap;
