To all whom it may concern vBe it known that I, JAMES E. MGOARTY,

ot' Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improved Fire-Kindler, of which the'following is a specication:

\ The object of my invention is -to makea cheap `and convenient package for readily kindling fires 5 and this object I attain in the following manner,`reference' being had to the accompanying drawing, in which--l Figure lis a vertical section of my improved kindling-package, and Fig. 2 an inverted plan vleW..

The outer `casing A of the `package is lanordinary bag of coarse andcheap paper, the

cotents consistingf'a small quantity of paper or other iibrous or absorbent material, a, saturated with pitch or other inflammable 'l substance, this being placed in a central position at the bottom of the package, as shown. Over this iniiammable material is placed a quantity, b, ot'shavil`1gs, chips, or other readi ly-ignitible particles of Wood, which may be also more or less saturated with inflammable substances. .The remainder d of thecontents of the package is made up ofthe wastegranulated coke which can be found at all gas-works, and which is' considered of little or no value.

0n the bottom of the package there is a mark, to indicate the point where the outer paper casing ot' the package should be torn,

. afterwhich it may be placed on the grate of a lire-place, and the usual coal placed on above.

By the application of a iiame to the torn portion of the 4package the paper will first be lighted, and owing to the intlammable ma-` '4 terial, with which it is saturated, the mass of tively short time the fuel in the fire-place will be thoroughly kindled.

I Vwish it to be understood'that Ido not de-y sire to claim,- broadly, a kindling-package, coinposed of iniiammable material inclosed in 'a paper bag.; but

v I claim 'as-my invention, and as a new manufacture-f The within-described tire-kindling package, consisting of an outerv bag or casing ot' paper, a mass ot' granulated coke, and a quantity of shavin'gs or chips saturated with iniiammable material andv embedded in the said mass of granulated coke, all being combined as set forth.
