Description

c. A. MAYNARD.
Fire-Kindler. N0. 167,849. 7 Patented Sept.2l,l875;.
PETERS. FHOTO-LITMQGRAPHER: WASHINGTON. D C.
UNITED STATES "PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES A. MAYNARD, OF ST. LQUIS, MISSOURI. I
IMPROVEMENT IN FlRE-KINDLERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 167,849, dated September 21, 1875; application filed May 22, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GHAs. A. MAYNARD, of the city of St. Louis, county of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fire-Kindlers, of which the following is a specification: V
This invention relates to a new and proved means for kindling fires; and consists in a kindler composed of mineral coal, wood, rosin, and a paper bag, all combined.
In carrying out my invention I take sawdust and saturate it with rosin or coal-tar. 1 then place a small quantity of it in a conicalshaped paper bag. I then fill the bag with mineral coal, (cannel coal preferred,) granulated or broken into small pieces. This forms a kindler highly inflammable, easily ignited, and readily igniting coal or wood. The coal may be coated with rosin or coal-tar, or any inflammable substance to assist combustion.
Figure 1 in the drawing is a perspective view of-my kindler. view.
A represents the coal, coated with rosin. B represents the wood, saturated with rosin. 0 represents the paper bag. D is the point to apply the match. The kindler is to be placed perpendicularly in the grate, with the point 1) at the bottom; then, surrounded with the fuel, the match is applied at point D, igniting the saturated wood, which readily fires the prepared coal above.
'Having thus described my invention, Iclaim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent A fire-kindler composed of mineral coal, rosin, or its equivalent, wood, and a paper bag combined, substantially as described.
CHARLES A. MAYNARD.
