HINGE CONNECTION FOR WATER CLOSET SEATS AND COVERS Filed May 9, 1929 floward aliasliq Patented May 27, 1930 UNITED J STATES Bowen (1. LESLIE, or mm, MASSACHUSETT Assmomw an Mi mm nia 7 1m .00., or HYDE PARK, MASSACHUSETTS, A c ron rmn or MASSACHUSETTS HINGE connnc'rronroa WATER-CLOSET snarsnun covnns npplication' filed May .19,
This invention relates toWater closets and particularly to the means of connectingthe seat and cover to a hopper, the objectof the present invention being the production of a hinge connection tor both the 'seat and cover which may be connected thereto Without the use of screws or similarsecuring-devices. 4
This object is attained by'the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
I Forthepurpose of illustrating the invention,-onepreferredform thereof is illustrated in the drawings, this form having been found to give satisfactory and reliable results, al-
though it istobe understood that the various instrumental-it-ies of which the invention consists can be variously arranged and organized, and'the invention 1s not'lim'ited-to the precise arrangement and organization. of
these instrumentalities'as herein shown and described except as required :by the scopeof the appended claims.
iOfthe drawings I Figure l representsa planyofa. toilet seat and coversecured tothe hopperby hinge connections "embodying the principles of the a present invention.
"Figure2represents a side elevation of the same, and

Similar characters indicate I like; parts This. shelf .11 ha cy indr cal hole :12 Q tendingtherethrough to receivethethreaded k l3Q Q fiQQ P S l a .Qn the lower end ,of each shank 13 is ai Washer 15 of resilientmatenial and a nut l6 by, uhic n a dnertical postsimay be s cur y clampedztoitheshelf1:1;
Eachipost 14 ha's a laterally extending shelf-1'1these-sockets T7 are in-aIinementfam ingeachcther. I I r" 111' 1929. Serial No. 3611734.
I The seat 18 has a rear extension 19, the opv posite sides of which are fiatand parallel.
To these opposite flat sides-ofth'e extension 19 are secured metal plates 20. I
The inner face of each plate 20' has two separated cone-shaped projections 21 which {are adapted to be positioned in the extension 19-and'lock said plate in position. 7 l
Each plate 20 has an opening22 therein and the outer faceof each plate is providedjvith a cylindrical recess 23 concentric With the 1A tubularmember 25 projects through the extension 19 and each of the sleeves 24 and has 2 its opposite ends upset as indicated at 26 to form shoulders abuttin the outer ends of the sleeves 24: to retain them in the recesses 23.
The cover 27 also has a rear-extension 28 in the opposite fiat sides of which are (lb;-
posed the metal sockets 29 having flanges'QO thereon to accurately extension. i. V 1 Each metal plate 20 has pro ecting "from position them ;in said its inner face a cone-shaped lug '31 which is fitted to the metal socket29.
These lugs 31 are in actual alineinent anC .form a pivot about-Which the cover 271mg: be'moved when it is desired to raise it fron'i the seat 18. I
against the inner face of the metal plates 20 and prevent the woodencover- 27 from becoming Worn by the constant raising andlowering of saidcover. Each post 14 has a flat face '32surrounding the sleeve 24 and bearing against-the outer face of the metal plate 20.
As the'meta-l plates 20 are always in contact with the flat faces 32 of the posts '14: i
all lateral movement o'f-the seat is prevented.
This is also true of the cover 27 inasmuch as the outer ends of the flanged metal sockets 29 are alvvaysin contact With the inner fiat faces of the metalplates 20.
The seat When raised or lowered moves about'the axis of the tubular m'emher25-and 'when ralsed or lowered carries the cover 2'? therewith, though said cover 27 may be raised This gives a very rigid construction of j hinged connections 'for'the seat and cover of a water closet.
One particular advantage of the construction is that no screws of any kind arenecesj sary inthe connection between the seat and cover and between the vertical supporting post 14: I
is a great disadvantage.
Another advantage of the present construction is thatthe exposed surfacesof the post 14 and platesQO may be enameled orcovered V, in some other, manner to give a better finish ;to the: hinge connections than would otherwise be obtained.
It is believed that the operation and many advantagesofthe invention will be understood without further description.
Having thus de scribed my invention, I
claim; 7 W a 1. In a water closet, two separated vertical posts having sockets facingtoward each 7 other; a seat. having an extension between said posts; a metal end plate at each side of. said extension having a recess n the outer face thereof; a sleeve fitted to'each socket with one end extending into said recess; and
[a member extending through the seat and both sleeves with its opposite ends upset over the outer ends'of said: sleeves.
2. In a water closet, two separated vertical posts having sockets facing toward each other; a seat having an extension between. i said posts; a metal end plate at each side I of said extension having a recess in the outer face thereof; a sleeve fitted to each socket with one end extending into said recess; and a tubular member extending through the seat and both sleeves with'its opposite ends upset' over the outer ends of said sleeves.
In a water closet, two separated vertical,
posts having sockets facing toward each ends of said sleeve's.- V I other; a seat having an extension between said posts; a metal end plate at each side of said extension having a recess in the outer facethereof, said plates each having two projections anchored in said extension; a sleeve fitted to each socket with one end ex tending into said recess; and a meniber extending through the seat and both sleeves with its opposite ends upset over the outer said posts; a cover having a rear extension; a metal end plate at each side of said extension having a recess in the outer face thereof and a cylindrical lug projecting into; the
