This invention relates toWater closets and particularly to the means of connectingthe seat and cover to a hopper, the objectof the present invention being the production of a hinge connection tor both the 'seat and cover which may be connected thereto Without the use of screws or similarsecuring-devices. 4

This object is attained by'the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

This is also true of the cover 27 inasmuch as the outer ends of the flanged metal sockets 29 are alvvaysin contact With the inner fiat faces of the metalplates 20.

The seat When raised or lowered moves about'the axis of the tubular m'emher25-and 'when ralsed or lowered carries the cover 2'? therewith, though said cover 27 may be raised This gives a very rigid construction of j hinged connections 'for'the seat and cover of a water closet.

One particular advantage of the construction is that no screws of any kind arenecesj sary inthe connection between the seat and cover and between the vertical supporting post 14: I

is a great disadvantage.

Another advantage of the present construction is thatthe exposed surfacesof the post 14 and platesQO may be enameled orcovered V, in some other, manner to give a better finish ;to the: hinge connections than would otherwise be obtained.

It is believed that the operation and many advantagesofthe invention will be understood without further description.

Having thus de scribed my invention, I

claim; 7 W a 1. In a water closet, two separated vertical posts having sockets facingtoward each 7 other; a seat. having an extension between said posts; a metal end plate at each side of. said extension having a recess n the outer face thereof; a sleeve fitted to'each socket with one end extending into said recess; and

[a member extending through the seat and both sleeves with its opposite ends upset over the outer ends'of said: sleeves.

cylindrical element surrounding eachprojecting end between the outer face of each end plate and one of said shoulders.

11. In a water closet, two separated vertical posts having sockets facing toward each other; a seat having an extension between said posts; a cover having a rear extension; a metal end plate at each side of said extension having formed integral therewith a cylindrical lug extending into the cover extension; a cylindrical element projecting from each end plate and fitted to each socket; said elements being in alinement and a member extending through the seat extension and both cylindrical elements with its opposite ends upset over the outer ends of said cylindrical elements.

12. In a water closet, two separated vertical posts having sockets facing toward each other; a seat having an extension between said posts; a cover having a rear extension; a metal end plate anchored to each side of said seat extension having a cylindrical lug extending into the cover extension and an outwardly extending cylindrical projection fitted to each socket, the projection on one plate being in alinement with the projection on the other plate; and a member extending through the seat extension and both cylindrical projections with its opposite ends upset over the A outer ends of said projections.
