GEORGE W. DIXON, OF GLOUCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN FISHING-LINE HAWSE-SWiVELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 75,949, dated April 11, 1876; application filed February 1, 1876.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEO. W. DIXON, of Gloucester, in the county ofEssex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Swivels for Fishing- Elawse and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will ,enable others skilled in the art to which-it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in swivels for hand-line gear; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, that will be more fully described hereinafter, whereby the snoods can be easily and securely fastened to the end of the hawse.
The accompanying drawings represent my invention.
a represents the weight to which the hand-line is attached, and to the lower end of which is secured the wooden llawse c. To the lower end of this hawse is secured the ferrule (Z, by means of screws, rivets, or other devices, and in the lower end of this ferrule is fastened the swivel e, by means of which the snoods can swing freely around in any direction without tangling the lines.
Heretofore there has always been a great deal of trouble found in swiveling the snoods to the hawse, owing to the fact that the pulling, jerking, and wear and tear on them is apt to pull them off or cut the lines by which they are tied. Various means have been resorted to to overcome this difficulty, but, so far as I know, without success until my present invention. By making the hawse of wood and making a ferrule on the swivel, as shown, the snoods can be attached to the weight firmly and securely, and much more cheaply than in any other manner.
I am aware of the patent to E. F. Decker, February 21, 1865, and J. R. Martin, July 31, 1866, and these I broadly disclaim.
Having thusdescribed my invention, I claim The combination of the weight a, hawse c, ferrule d, swivel e, and snoods, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 15th day of January, 1876.
