Description

I May 6, 1930. A. J. CARMICHAEL LAMP SHADE HOLDER Filed Aug. 20, 1928 Patented May 6, 1930 ter ANDREW J. CARMICI-IAEL, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE GREIST MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF NEYV HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION OF CONNECTICUT Application filed. August 20, 1928.
This invention relates to devices for holding lamp shades to facilitate their support from a suitable stem or standard.
The device is characterized by a two-part clamp, the members whereof are constructed and arranged to embrace the shade surrounding the opening in the top of the shade and to provide for receiving a supporting standard, to which the holder may be clamped.
The various features of the invention will be best understood from the following detailed description thereof, when considered in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which I F ig; 1 is a sectional view through the holder and a portion of a lamp shade;
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2, Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the holder;
Fig. 4- is a sectional view of the holder taken on the line 44l, Fig. 3; and
Fig. 5 is an inverted plan view of the holder.
The holder comprises a cup-shaped member 2 having a central aperture 5 and'a downwardly inclined wide flange 1, the cup-shaped member being adapted to fit snugly within the central hole in the shade S, while the flange 1, which is herein shown as inclined to about an angle of 5 .5 degrees, fits upon the exterior of the shade. An inner ring 3, of truncated cone formation, has a central aperture which receives the member 2, and slides freely thereon in assembling parts of the holder, said ring having the same inclination as the flange 1, and when properly positioned being arranged to fit beneath the shade, and cooperate with the flange 1 to embrace the shade adjacent the opening through the latter.
At suitable intervals in the side wall of the cup-shaped member 2, tongues 7 are formed by cutting away the metal of the member 2 upon three sides of a rectangle, so asto leave each tongue free to be easily bent outwardly, as shown in Fig. 2, and caused to press against the inner face of the ring 3, thereby providing a clamping means, in connection with said ring, for holding the shade S tightly gripped between the flange 1 and the ring 3. The tongues 7 are pressed out LAMP-SHADE HOLDER Serial No. 300,735.
wardly so as to firmly bind the ring 3 into engagement with the inner surface of the shade S surrounding its central aperture, after the ring has been slid into place as shown in the drawings. l/Vhen the holder has thus been securely clamped to the shade, the aperture 5 is placed over a threaded extension of the lamp standard, and a clamping nut, or equivalent means, is screwed or otherwise attached to the end of the standard for firmly maintaining the cup-shaped member of the holder on the standard.
It will be seen accordingly that the member 2 not only constitutes a part of the clamp or holder for the shade, but additionally has provision for forming a connection with the lamp standard when the end of the same is passed through the aperture 5. The member 2 thus performs the two-fold function of providing part of the shade holder means and of forming an element for supporting the shade from its standard.
The right is reserved to make such changes in the details of construction, or of the arrangement of the elements shown as are within the spiritof the invention, provided such changes fall within the scope of the claim.
I claim as my invention:
A shade holder, comprising a cupshaped body member provided with a central aperture'in its bottom to receive a lamp standard, and an inclined flange extending downwardly from its upper edge to overlay a lamp shade about the central opening thereof, of a slidable, downwardly inclined ring arranged parallel to said flange, to fit over said body and engage the shade within the opening thereof, and bendable tongues extending down from the upper portion of the side of the body member to a point above the bot-tom thereof, and arranged to be pressed outwardly against said ring for clamping the parts together.
In testimony whereof i have hereunto set my hand this 16th day of August A. D. 1928.
ANDREW J. CARMICHAEL.
