IMPROVEMENT lN PROCESSES FOR CLEANING AND EXTRACTING OIL FROM LEATHER.
Specification @orming part of Letters Patent Nol74,76l, dated March 14, 1876; application filed September 23, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, ISRAEL BENT, of Lowell, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Process of Cleaning and Extracting Oil from Leather, which process is fully set This process is intended to be applied principally to card leather, as used in woolen mills. The leather in the cards comes to be completely saturated with oil from the wool, and it is the object of this invention to extract the oil from the leather, so that both can be of use in the future. Old belting, 850., can also be cleaned by the same process.
The cleaned leather is of use to shoe-manufacturers principally, and the oil can be utilized wherever it is desired.
My process is to first warm the leather somewhat, so as to soften and render somewhat in vessels of proper size, then turn a sutficient quantity of naphtha over the leather in the vessels to thoroughly saturate it. I claim as myinvention- The process of extracting oil from leather, consisting first of warming it,- then immers ing it in naphtha, and lastly in submitting it to pressure, all substantially as described.
