DISPLAYING SHELF BRACKET Filed June 20, 1927 INVENTOF ATTORNEY Patented Feb. 4, 1930 IUNII'TED sTATss rail"ENT: o F cs L320 1'. HUNSTIGER, F CHICAGQ; ILLINOIS DISPLAYING-SHELF. Emmi J 7 Application filed June 20, 1927. Serial lilo." 206,251.
" The invention consists in the novel com- :bination and arrangement of parts to be here inafter described and claimed c The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings.
- .showing the preferred form of construction and in which:
Fig. l'is a front elevational view of two shelves supported by my improved brackets;
, Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken substantially in the plane of the linef2.2 on Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an elevational view of one embodiment of a bracket employed in the construction depicted in Figs. 1 and 2; and
, Fig. 4 is an elevational detail view of a modified form of bracket construction.
' In the construction of store fronts it frequently occurs that a portion of the show win-.
dow is comparativelvnarrow and merchants in displaying goods in these narrow portions 330 have found it advantageous to provide shelves in these spaces and to mount the goods to be displayed on theseshelves. Further,
. in displaying certain kinds'of merchandise it hasbeen found" advantageous to employ V R shelves in the show windows inorder to support the merchandise. Especially in the case of the. narrow show window it has been found difiicult to properly locate the goods on the shelves in order to advantageously dis- 49 play them. The shelves used are usually constandards occupied space which might be used for displayingpurposes and they also added to the difficulty of placing articles upon the shelves when said shelves were'located in the-described narrow points of the show window. 7
other sui'table supporting elements might be mentioned.
In view of the foregoing disadvantages I have provided a method whereby the shelves may'abe suspended from the top of the show window by meansof chains. In order to ac complish this I provide a bracket 10 which embdies upwardly extending lugs such as 11 and 12 on the ends thereof. The shelf 13 is mounted on the bracket-10 and thelugs 11 v d and 12 serve to' preventdisplacement of the shelf. Suitable openings such as 14 are proivided in the upwardly extending lugs and suitable chains 15 are positioned so as to have links thereof retained in the openings 14 and the chains 15 are then attached to suitable supporting members (not shown) provided on the topof the showwindow or other point whereit is desired to mount the shelves. Theforegoing construction'serves to -support only one shelf and I have found it advantageous to support more than one and in order toaccomplish this I provide on the lower side of the bracket 10 so as tobe disposed opposite 7 the lugs 11 and 12 suitable supporting elements such" as'16. Suitable chains such as 15 are then-secured in the supportingele- .75 ments16 and'the lower ends of the chains 15 are'attached to other brackets 10 in the manner thathas been described. In this way I am enabled to support any desired number of shelves. from a singl-e po'int. v
In Fig. 3 .I'have illustratedone form of the securing elements 16 and I show herein an eye which is I adapted I to be secured to .the
stituted' for the eyes and still not depart from the spirit and scope of my invention and as will he -apparent to anyone skilled inthe art substituted for; the eyes shown and. hooks V In, Fig. 4 amodified formpf bracket con ing lug 18 and at the connection between the horizontal portion 17 and the vertical portion 18 the member 17 is bent downwardly so as to form a recess 19. The link 20 of the chain 15 is then inserted over the vertically extending portion 18 and is disposedso as to rest in the recess 19 substantially as shown in Fig. 4. This modified form of bracket embodies numerous advantages over the one'disclosed in Fig. 3 for it may be formed of a single piece of metal that may be stamped so as to embody the desired configuration.
It is to be understood that while I have shown herein the vertically extending lugs as being formed as part of the bracket angle clips may be substituted therefor and be suitably secured to the horizontal portion'of the bracket 10. Further, if desired the supportelements may be secured to support said strip, said strip having openings provided therein adjacent said up-turned portions, and elements including stem portions adapted to be secured in said last named openings, said elements comprising substantially loop shaped portions. adapted to be disposed to depend be low said strip.
In testimony WhereOf I afiix my signature.
LEO T. HUNSTIGER.
It is to be understood that while I have shown herein but two modifications of my invention that this may be varied in many ways and still not depart from the purview of my invention. e
As is clearly shown in Fig. 2 it is frequently desirable that the shelves 13 be of different then the succeeding widths are mounted in this manner. It is apparent from this that the brackets 10 will be provided of a plurality of sizes so as to accommodate shelves of varied widths; However, it is to be distinctly understood that shelves of the same widthmight be mounted in the foregoing manner and still not depart fromv the spirit and scope of my invention.
While I have illustrated and described the riation and modificatiomwithout departing I from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore,
do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within claim.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is: v V
A shelf supporting bracket member comprising a flat strip having up-turned portions preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into eifect,'th1s 1s capable of Vathe scope of the appended at the ends thereof, said up-turned portions having openings provided thereinadjacent the upper ends thereof in which supporting
