Description

Feb. 4, 1930. L. F. WILLIAMSON OIL BURNER awn 5oz lJm/z'zz Filed NOV. 25, 1927 Patented Feb. 4, 1930 LEWIS I. WILLIAMSON, OF HARRISONVILLE, MISSOURI I 01 BURNER Application filed November 25, 1927. Serial No. 235,651.
This invention relates to an oil burner designed for use in stoves and furnaces, one of the objects being to providea simple and efficient device which will not become clogged 527117? carbon and can burn a low grade of A further object is to provide a burner which does not require the use of a blower or other mechanism likely'to get out of order 20 herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings, the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of the burner. Figure 2 is a side elevation thereof. Figure 3 is a section on'line 33, Figure 1, the supply pipe being shown in elevation.
Figure 4 is an enlarged section on line 4L1,Figure1. V I r eferring' to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates-the-base ofth'e burner which canbe of any desired contour provided with a central orifice 2 through which air is adaptedto'flow freely. Formed in the top face of the base 1 concentric with the opening2 is a gutter 3 into which opens a fuel supply pipe 1 extending from any suitable source. 1 I V Overlying the base 1 is a dome-like spreading plate 5 the marginal portion of whichis supported above the center of the gutter 3,,
there being radial wings 6 extending'from this plate and bearing on the base 1so as to support the marginal portion of the plate away from the walls of the gutter ,3. The wings-6 can be detachably held in position by any suitable means, such as bolts 7 ex-.
tending through the base. The gutter is provided with a wick 8 formed of loosely arranged asbestos fibers which partly fill the gutter but offer little if any resistance to the free flow of air under the marginal portion of the plate 5.
In practice it is designed to use a base 1 which will rest on the grate bars of the stove or furnace and practically close communication between the fire box and the ash pit except through theorifice 2. The fuel to be used is supplied to the gutter 3 from the pipe 4: and will spread along the gutter and be 'absorbed'by the wick 8. When this fuel is lighted combustion will be supported by the P NT. FIC
draft of air upwardly through the orifice '65 2 and radially under themarginal portion of thespreading plate, 5, the mixture of the 'air 7 with the fuelinsuring almost complete combustion. After the burner has been in use for a short time the metal portions thereof become heated to a high temperature and, consequently, the fuel will be vaporized in the wick and thus mix readily with the hot air deflected by the plate 5 and issuing under the margin of the plate. v
For the purpose of strengthening the burner it iswpreferred to provide the same with a rib 9 concentric with the outer edge of the gutter 3 and the wings 6 are formed with shoulders 10 on their lower faces for engaging the outer edges of these ribs, therebyto hold the'plate 5 against sliding movement on the base 1. This construction has been illustrated clearly in Figure 4:.
supply pipe opening upwardly through the base into the bottom of the gutter, a domelike spreading plateabove the base and ex- 1 tending over the opening, the marginal portion of said plate being supported above the center of the gutter, the inner portion of the gutter opening into'the space beneath this plate and the outer portion of the gutter opening beyond the margin of the plate, a Wick consisting of loosely arranged asbestos, fibres partly'filling the gutter and extending to the marginal portion of the spreading plate, said Wick permitting substantially free passage of air across the gutter, Wings radiating from the spreading plate and bearing on the base at points outside of the gutter, and means extending through the Wings and base for binding them together firmly.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature.
LEWIS F. WILLIAMSON.
