OIL-BURNER FOR STOVES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 13,1 914.
Application filed September 27, 1912. Serial No. 722,670.
To all (r71 0m it may concern.
lie it known that l, l nnmcmen E. SciL-mn, citizen of the United States, and a resident l tialeshurg. in the county ot Knox, State t illinois, have invented a new and useful tl-il iiurner 't'or Stoves oil which the tollowing is a specification.
f'srty invention relates to oil-burning apparatus which is adapted for placement in and which is removable. from an ordinary cook-stove or range firebox.
it is an object ot the invention to provide means oi the character described which may in its entirety be placed in the tire-box of the stove. without danger of an explosion of the oil-supply tank or reservoir and without drilling any holes in the stove.
that the elements constituting the means above recited be durable, strong simple but withal etleetivc, and economic of manufacture and purchase. is a prime requisite, and to provide such, means constitutes another object.
it a further object to generally improve the constrmation and incraise the utility and etliciency at the device over those prior ones of similar nature.
Ettore speciticall stated, these objects are: To so support the burner per se that itrests in close proximitw to the cooking utensil whereby a blue flame is produced; to avert danger oil an explosion, which I accomplish by providing an arrangement of walls attording an air space intermediate them; to direct the 'tlanic immediately beneath the cooking utensil. whereby (inasmuch as the latter is generallv (it such size as to snugly litthe cook-stove hole) the gases, smoke and other pr-talurts ot combustion will be con fined and not be permitted to pass into the room, to be breathed by the occupants thereof. but will pass out through the chimney; to provide a cool kitchen, because of the fact that no part oi. the stove is contacted by the tta me from the burner; to provide an apparatus which may instantly, in its entirety be removed from the stove tire-box, whereupon a coal or wood tire may be started therein; to provide an apparatus of such character that should the contents of a cooking-utensil heated by it boil over extinguishing the ice and pezmitting the oil to flow, there will be no resultant danger or injury. the oil lip downwardly to the ashpan ot' the stove; to provide novel means for automatically shutting ott the How of oil when the tank is lifted; and to provide a burner which is attachable to an ordinary coal or wood-burning cook stove or range without drilling openings into the latter for the admission of a fuel-supply pipe.
Further objects will appear hereinafter in setting forth in detail the advantages of my improvements.
For the purpose o't' illustrating the invention 1 have shown in the accompanying drawings the form which is at present pret'erred by me.
In said ;lrawings: Figure 1 is a perspective showing by dotted lines the placement of my improvements in the fire-box of a stove; Fig. 2, a longitudinal, central section, partly in elevation, of my improvements; Fig. 8, a transverse central section in Fig. 2; and Fig. 4, an enlarged perspective detail oi the support for the operating or burner parts of my improvements.
Coming now to a detailed description of the drawings. wherein the same part. uni formly indicated by a numeral, 2 (shown best in Fig. 4) designates a support comprising an elongated base 3, sides 4iand flanges 5, the latter adapted to rest on the ledges which support the center or division plate 6 (Fig. 1) oi the stove. Being preferably of thin sheet metal the flanges 5 will not interfere with the placement of said plate.
7 designates an oil-tank receptacle or shield. preferably of asbestos board or other material possessing heat and flame resisting properties and is provided with a lid or cover 8 of like material. The bottom of the shield rests on the base 3 and its sides are apertured for the passage of a teed-pipe 5) leading to a pair of burners 10, which are disposed immediately below the usual front stove-lid holes.
11, 11 are globe valves disposed in and embracing the pipe 9, and each is actuated by a valve stem 12.
Fitted within the shield T is an oil-tank 13 provided at: its top with a handle 14. and having in its bottom a centrally arranged conical opening or outlet 15 which commie nicates with a sub-tank 16 the bottom of which is aperturcd at 17 and communicates with an opening in the pipe 9.
18 indicates a gravity valve having a conical head adapted to tit snugly in the opening 15 to close it and shut ed the flow of oil therefrom when the tank 3 is lifted from its receptacle, which may be done by first removing the cover S. While in operative position the stem of the valve 18 rests on the bottom of the sub-tank and is of such length that the head thereof will be slightlv raised to permit a suitable quantity of oil to flow from the supply to the sub-tank.
19 is an air chamber afi'orded by the inner wall of each burner 10. As shown, these burners are annular and oi-shaped in cross section, their upper portions being flared outwardly to form an inner ledge 20 and an outer ledge 21 on which rest respectively inner and outer tubes or chimneys 2'2 and 23, affording an air space at.
represents an ordinary tubular wick.
26 is a guard comprising crossed wires for preventing escape of the gravity valve when the oil-tank is reversed as for filling or when for another purpose it is removed from operative position.
Having thus set forth the construction, purposes and advantages of my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent the following, namely 1. In combination with a cook stove of the type adapted to burn coal or wood, an oil-burner comprising an oil-supply tank, a fire and heat resisting shield within which it is contained, a removable lid for said shield, whereby said tank may be lifted bodily from said shield, a sub-tank com1nunicating with said tank and disposed within said shield, a valve in the main tank, adapted to automatically open when it is operatively positioned, to permit oil to flow from the main tank to the sub-tank, a burner proper in substantially the same horizontal plane with said tanks, means of communication between it and the sub-tank, and means for establishing or cutting off the oil supply from the sub-tank to the burner proper.
2. Combined with a cook-stove adapted to burn coal or wood, an oil-supply tank, a
sub-tank in communication therewith, a burner, means for connecting it with the sub-tank, and asupport for said tanks and burner, said support adapted to rest on a portion or" the stove top and all of said elements having placement within the fire-box of the stove, all of the last recited elements adapted to be operatively placed within or removed from the fire box of the stove and to be suspended from the top-plate thereof.
3. The combination with a stove adapted to burn coal or wood, of a substantially U- shaped support provided with flanges adapted to rest on the front divisionplate ledges thereof, and an oil burner adapted to rest on said support.
l. in oilburning atachment of the class described, adapted to be placed wholly in and to be removed from the firebox of an ordinary wood or coal-burning cook-stove or range, and comprising a fire and heat-resisting shield having an aperture in its side, an oil-tank disposed in said shield and provided with an outlet in its bottom, a sub-tank in communication with said outlet, a gravity valve adapted to rest in-said outlet and its stem on the bottom of said sub-tank to support it and to permit the flow of oil from the upper to the lower tank, said Valve adapted to fall by gravity when the upper tank is raised, whereby the flow of oil is shut off, a teed-pipe in communication with the sub tank and passing through said aperture in said shield, a burner connected with said pipe, and a plurality of walls, afiording an air-space, surmounting said burner and intermediate it and said shield.
In testimony whereof 1 hereto sign my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FREDERICK E. SCHAAL. lVitnesses FANNIE J. Sonsnrr, C. S. RICHARDS.
