Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.-
BENTON J. FIELD, OF LEAKSVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA.
IMPROVEMENT N STYPTIC REMEDIES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 174,219, dated February 29, 1876 application filed November 3, 1875.
To all whom it may concern 1 Be it known that I, B. J. FIELD, of Leaksville, in the county of Rockingham and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Medical Oomponnds; and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description thereof:
My invention relates to medical compounds which are used as styptics, and it consists in a styptic composed of rosin, alcohol, tannin, and camphor, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth. These ingredients are used in about the following proportions: 1 gallon'alcoho]; 6 pounds rosin; 4 ounces tannin; 1 ounce camphor.
When the rosin, tannin, and camplior are thoroughly dissolved in the alcohol the styptic is ready for use. It is to be applied by saturating a pellet of cotton with the styptic and then applying the same to any external bleeding, where it will adhere so tightly that it is impossible for the blood to Work it off, and,
I as the blood cannot penetrate it, the bleeding must stop.
This may be applied to any external bleeding for stopping the same, and experiments have proven that it will even control the bleeding of the large arteries.
do not confine myself to the proportions of the ingredients herein mentioned, as they may, perhaps, be varied without impairing the efficiency of my styptic.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A styptic, composed of rosin in solution, tannin, and camphor, substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
BENTON JEREMY FIELD.
