Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE EVERT, OF GALENA, ILLINOIS.
LINIMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 417,011, dated December 10, 1889.
Application filed May 6, 1889 Serial No. 309,792. (No specimens.)
T 0 all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE EVERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Galena, in the county of Jo Daviess and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Remedies for Rheumatism, &c., of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a compound for external application to rheumatism, swelled throats, sprains, swellings and bruises of all descriptions, and which when so applied will serve to cure and relieve such affections in a speedy and effectual 1n anner, as will more fully hereinafter be set forth.
The ingredients of the compound are combined in the following proportions: Three ounces of Malaga olive oil, one ounce of aquaammonia, one ounce of tincture of arnica, one ounce of spirits of camphor, one ounce of oil of origanum, one ounce of oil of red cedar, one ounce of concentrated ammonia. These ingredients are shaken well together, in about the proportions specified, and applied to the affected portion of the body by rubbing. The ammonia acts as a stimulant and irritant by heating the parts, while the arnica and camphor reduce the inflammation and pain and have a soothing and quieting effect. The red cedar also acts as an irritant. The oil of irritant.
sheathes the irritated surface from the action of the air.
I prefer to use the two kinds of ammonia in the proportions specified, as I have found by experiment that better results are ob tained thereby than by the use of concentrated ammonia diluted with water. It is evident, however, that I mayuse the concen-' trated ammonia diluted with a sufficient quantity of water instead of aqua-ammonia without departing from the invention in theleast. The ingredients when compounded in the proportions specified and thoroughly agitated intimately and chemically combine with each other and produce a permanent compound that will preserve its efficiency for an indefinite time;
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein-described medical compound, consisting of Malaga olive oil, aqua-ammonia, tincture of arnica, spirits of camphor, oil of origanum, and oil of red cedar, combined in the proportions named.
In testimony whereof I affix n1 ysignature in presence of two witnesses.
