Patented Dec. 31, 1929 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE THEODORE A. FEDERWITZ, 0F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO STOKES AND SMITH COMPANY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA SHEET FEEDER AND CONVEYER Application filed January 28, 1925. Serial No. 5,225.
ple, as is utilized for feeding sheets to adhesiveor coating-applying mechanism.
Further in accordance with my invention, there is carried upon the aforesaid support for the conveyer-driving means guide plate structure of the sheet-feeding mechanism. Further in accordance with my invention, there is carried by the aforesaid movable support a roller of a pair utilized for feeding the sheets.
Further in accordance with my invention, there is carried by the aforesaid movable support a roller for guiding and feeding a sheet in contacting relation with the coating-distributing surface.
My invention resides in apparatus of the character hereinafter described and claimed.
For an illustration of one of the various forms my invention may take, reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational View, partly in vertical section, of structure embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a View similar to Fig. 1, with the movable support thrown back.
Fig. 3 is an end elevational .view, partly in vertical section, on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings. upon the main frame or support 1 of the machine is mounted the driven feed roller 2, with which co-acts the idler feed roller 3 movable toward and away from the roller 2 by mechanism not. shown.
livered by the roller 7 immersed in the coating material held in the receptacle 8.
Pivoted to the frame 1 upon the studs 9 are the support or frame members 10 united by the bar 11, the latter serving as a handle for moving the frame 10 about its pivots 9 from the operative position indicated in Fig. 1 to the throw-back or inoperative position indicated in Fig. 2 for effecting accessibility to the feeding mechanism.
Carried by the movable support or frame 10 is the roller 12 driven by the forked clutch member 13, between whose ends is received the tongue 14 upon the shaft of the roller 12 and the driving pin 15 secured to the rotating sleeve member 16 driven by the pinion 17 through the longitudinally movable clutch member 18. Threaded into the sleeve member 16,is the sleeve 19, upon which is secured the hand wheel 20 and through which extends the extension 21 on the clutch member 13. Upon rotation of the hand wheel 20 the clutch member 13 is withdrawn toward the left, disengaging the shaft of the roller 12 from its drivin means. The member 13 when in the driving position indicated in Fig. 3 serves. in addition to driving the roller, v
12. to lock the frame IOagainst pivotal movement with respect to the main support or frame 1. I
Upon the shaft of the roller 12 is a gear 22 driving the gear 23 secured upon the shaft of the co-operating roller 24, which with the roller 12 drives the conveyer band or belt 25, which passes between the rollers 12 and 24 and over the idler roller 26 carried upon the frame 10.
Carried upon the frame 10 isthe guide plate structure 27, which co-acts with the guide plate stucture 5 to form a guide passage between which the shects are fed by the feed rollers 2, 3 and 4, 28, the latter carried upon the frame 10.
Carried by the frame 10 is the driven guide or feed roller 29, upon whose shaft is a gear, not shown, which, when the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 1, meshes with and is driven by a driving gear carried by the frame 1. f
55 engaging rolls, of a movable support carrythereafter deflected from the roller 6 by the stripper plates 30 around the idler roller 26 on to the upper side of the conveyer belt 25, which carries it off from left toward the right, Fig. 1.
In the operation described, it frequently occurs that a sheet becomes crumpled or otherwise leformed, or becomes jammed or clogged within that portion of its travel from the feed rolls 2 and 3 to and beyond the coacting rollers 6 and 29. To remove the obstructions and damaged sheet. the operator first actuates the hand wheel 20, disconnecting the shaft of the feed roll 12* and unlocking the frame 10 from the main frame 1, and
thereafter rotates the bar 11 in clockwise direction, as viewed in Fig. '1, rotating in the same direction about the pivots 9 the rolls 12, 24, 26, 28, 29 and the guide plate structure 27, to position indicated in Fig. 2, from which it is apparent that there is ready access to the region above the guide plate structure 5 and adjacent the rolls 2. 3, 4 and 6.
Upon removal of the obstruction, the frame 10 is restored to the position indicated in Fig. 1, the hand wheel 20 operated in reverse direction to effect coupling of the shaft of the roller 12 to its driving means and to lock the frame 10 to the main frame 1.
