In paper folding machines and more articularly in machines employing bucking plates'or uides for effecting one or more parallel folds in the paper sheet by the well known buckling process the sheets are fed either manually or on conveyor bands or tapes to the rollers which convey the same to the buckling plates. Before the sheets are seized by the rotating feed rollers the stack of sheets is usually brought up against a lateral guide to the folding mechanism in the correct position relatively to the longtudinal axis of the machine. This disadvantage is obviated according to the present invention by mounting one or both of the lateral guides in such a manner that it or they are moved away out of contact with the stack at the moment that a sheet is fed forward and are returned to their normal position only when the sheet has travelled clear of the lateral guides.
In order however that the nature of the invention may be readily understood one method of carrying the same into effect is shown by way of example in the accompanying drawings in which similar reference characters relate to like parts throughout the several figures, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a folding machine of the type previously referred to.

According to the present invention means are provided for moving either the lateral guide cl or both lateral guides d d out of contact with the stack a. For this purpose the guide d is mounted on the three bars or rails Z, m and n that are adapted to slide in grooves 0 provided on the upper surface of the table 6 and the guide 01 is similarly mounted on thejthree bars or rails Z m n. It will be clear that due to the rotation of the cam w thelever u will be oscillated on its pivot 0) so that a reciprocatory movement will be imparted to the bar m, whereby the lateral guide d will be alternately moved out of contact and returned into contact with the stack of sheets a and the several shafts are so geared together and the operation of the cam so timed that the guide (Z is moved away at the precise moment when the uppermost sheet of the stack has been passed by the operation of the roller 6 to the rollers fand f the actual outward movement of the lateral. guide taking place as the roller swings downwardly inreadiness to pass the sheet in co-operation with the roller f to the conveyor tapes 9. f
It will also be clear that both guides (Z and d may be simultaneously moved out of contact with the stack and returned to their normal position by the oscillation of the lever it operated by the cam 00.
To effect this simultaneous movement of both the lateral guides d and cl a lever e is pivotally mounted on a bracket 1" secured to the under-surface of the table Z) and is connected at its opposite ends by pivoted links t t to the pivot pins 10 and 11 depending respectively from the central bars m on.
What I claim is 1. In a paper folding machine the combination'with means for feeding a stack of paper sheets between two lateral guides, means for withdrawing single sheets successively from said stack and means for conveying same to the folding mechanism of means for moving both of said lateral guides out of contact and returning same into con tact with said stack for the purpose specified.
. 2.-In a paper folding machine the combination with means of feeding a stack of paper sheets between two lateral guides, a roller for withdrawing single sheets successively from said stack, a pair of (Jo-operating rollers receiving said sheets'from said first roller and a conveyor receiving sheets from said pair of co-operating'rolle'rs' and conveying same to the folding mechanism of means for'moving one of said lateral guides out of contact with said stack at the moment when said pair of co-operating rollers come into operation and for returning said lateral guide to its original position into contact with the stack. v
3. Ina paper folding machine the combination with means .for feeding a stack of paper sheets between two lateral guides, a roller for withdrawing single sheets successively'from said stack, a pair of co-operating rollers receiving said sheets from said first roller and a conveyor receiving sheets from said pair of co -operating rollers and conveying same to the folding mechanism of means for moving both of said lateral guides out of contact with said stack at the moment when said pair of co-operating rollers come into operation and for returning said lateral guides to their original position into contact with the stack.
