Description
Patented July 26, 1927. f a
STEPHEN RENE ADLER, OF NEW ,YORK, n. Y.
LUBRIGATING COMPOSITION AND PROCESS FOR MAKING THE SAME.
No Drawing.
This invention relates to a composition of matter for lubricating the string supporting screws on musical instruments, and to a process for making said compositions.
The object of the invention is to provide a lubricating composition of wax like consistency which can be readily applied to said screws and which will aid in setting them to the required position.
Another object of my invention is to provide a lubricating composition of the above characteristics which while facilitating the smooth turning of said screws at the same time will have adhesive and setting qualities so that the screws will be kept exactly in a position to which they have been turned.
Other objects of the invention are: to provide a semi-solid wax like lubricating composition having the above advantages which also will be adaptable to be formed into suitable shapes convenient for application, will prevent the rusting of the screw threads, will not change and will not be affected by the changes in the weather.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the description.
The improved composition comprises a mixture of vegetable oil, such as olive oil, cottonseed oil, petroleum jelly, finely precipitated chalk. powdered graphite, and a water solution of sodium hydroxide.
These ingredients have been found by me to be the niost effective in about the follow ing proportions: olive oil 15 parts by weight, petroleum jelly 10 parts by weight, precipitated chalk 26 parts, powdered graphite 25 parts, sodium hydroxide solution (83%) 7 parts, the lye best is 33 percentage in strength. All the above ingredients may be of the common commercial variety or quality.
In preparing my improved composition of matter, the necessary olive oil and petroleum jelly are placed in a container and melted together, after which the described amount of precipitated chalk and powdered graphite are added into the molten mixture and mixed well with the same. The resulting emulsion is kept at about 120 degrees Fahrenheit, stirred steadily, and the sodium hydroxide solution is added thereto preferably in a continuous slow manner, thereby saponifying the oil .and precipitating part of the soap as a calcium soap owing to the double decomposition between the chalk and the sodium hydroxide.
The mixture is now kept at the above tem- Application filed May 27, 1925. Serial No. 33,293.
per-ature for about 3 hours after which it is poured out of its container, kneaded, pressed w into the desired shapes and allowed to dry.
I preferably prepare my improved lubrieating composition of matter in the form of small rods and it is a dark colored, semihard, wax like substance which may be applied to the screws or posts supporting the strings of -a violin or other similar musical instruments. The screws are then easy to turn. every movement will be smooth and steady, and they will keep the exact position to which they are set. It is obvious, that a musical instrument the strings supporting screws of which have been treated with my composition of matter will be adaptable to a much finer adjustment of its tones than the one which did not receive such treatment. It is also obvious that my improved lubricating composition of matter may be used not only for the screw posts of musical instruments but also for any other elements of devices where the characteristics of the same as hereinbefore described, may be of a special value.
I want to emphasize that the terms, cxpressions and proportions employed are used as terms of description and not of limitation. and I have no intention, in the use of such terms, expressions and proportions, of excluding any equivalents of the features shown and described, but recognize that further embodiments may be possible within the scope of the invention claimed.
lVhat I claim as new, is
1. A process for preparing a composition of matter for lubricating purposes, said process comprising in mixing a vegetable oil, with petroleum jelly, melting the aforesaid mixture, addingprecipitated chalk and powdered graphite to the aforesaid molten mixture, heating and agitating the same, thereby creating an emulsion of the mixture, adding a sodium hydroxide solution of moderate concentration to aforesaid emulsion, and heating and stirring the resulting mixture.
2. A composition of matter for lubricating the screw posts of musical instruments and similar devices, the constituent ingredients of said composition consisting of a vegetable oil, petroleum jelly, precipitated chalk and powdered graphite, and sodium hydroxide solution, the vegetable oil being saponified by the sodium hydroxide solution and partly precipitated by the calcium compound formed by the double decomposition diuln and calcium soaps of a vegetable oil, between the powdered chalk and the sodium petroleum jelly, precipitated chalk, and
