Burr GAUGE.
Application filed December 11, 1925. Serial No. 74,790.
This invention relates to a butt gauge for locati 11g on the door jamb. and on. the style of the door the correct position for the hinge plate recesses.
The device is designed to be removably secured to the corresponding faces of the door jamb and door and definitely locates the length and breadth of the portions to be removed and the depth of such removal.
The invention is fully-described in the following specification, reference being made to the drawings by which it is accompanied, in which: i i
Fig. 1 is an end elevation of the gauge showing its application to the door jamb, an end lug and adjusting screw being removed to afford a clearer view.
Fig. 2 is a face view of the same, and
Fig. 3 is a section to asomewhat enlarged scale of the gland washer which retains the securing nails in position.
The device comprises 'a gauge plate the outer edge of which is turned at right angles to the face, as at 3,;to impart a measure of rigidity to the plate.
This gauge plate 2 is conlnected'to a fence bar 9 by light metal knees adjacent each end. 'The edges of this bar are similarly out turned to impart rigidity and prevent the nuts of the bolts 11 from turning comprising horizontal and upright portions 1 and 15 respectively. I
The upwardly turned portion 15 of each knee is secured to the fence bar 9 by a small bolt 11 countersunk in the knee and passing through an elongated aperture 10 in the fence bar. The longer member la of each knee is secured to'the upper face of the gauge plate 2 to retain aspace 20 between it and the underside of the member 14 of the knee,
- by a small bolt 6, thehead of which engages the downwardly turned edge 3 to preventit turning, and a wing nut 7 on the outer side of the knee.
The distance 20 is preserved by a series of thin washers 8 introduced on the bolt between the plate and the knee. These washers afford means of variation of the distance 20 to suit different thicknesses of hinge plates. The holes 4 in the plate 2 and those 19 in the knees ltthrough which thebolt 6 passes'are elongated each in the direction of the part and thereby permit dual adjustment of the space between the knees and of the distance of the edge of the plate '2 from the fence bar.
lost.
the gauge plate .to the mark on the correspon Secured to the upper sideof eachf knee adjacent the upwardly turned portion is a gland washer 16. This washer and the knee are apertured in alignment to receive a small wire nail 17, such as a lath nail, and
between the gland washer and the knee-a rubber washer 18 is interposed, which washer is perforated by the nail 17 when introduced and .'s designed by its frictional grip on the nail to retain the nail in position ready for use, without fear oft/heir being This avoids the necessity of hunting for nails every time the device is to be used.
Lugs 12 project from each end ofthe fencebar 9, in which lug adjusting screws 13 are threaded. if
. In the application of the device the door I is fitted within the door jamb 21 and is wedged to the required height from the floor. Thereafter a line is scribed across door and door jamb in the approximate position of the upper and lower hinges.
The door is then removed and the gauge, which is the particular subject of this application, having been adjusted to the length, breadth and thickness of the hinge plate. is applied (see Fig. 1) to the rabbet of the door amb and is secured by nails 17 driven through the gland washers 16 and knees M. The inneredge of the gauge plate 2, the
adjacent face of the fence bar Q'and the adj acent edges of the knees 1 give the length, breadth and depth of the recess to be cut, and this portion may be cut with a chisel across the two ends and the fence bar,'and the portionremoved by placing the flat of the chisel on the face of 2 and cutting towards the fence bar 9. I
It will be noticed that V notches 5 are removed from the inner edge of the gauge plate 2 to avoid. injury to the chisel while cutting the ends of the recess. It will also be observed that the notches are equi-distantly spaced and efficiently serve to indicate standard butt and hinge sizes to facilitate quick adjustment of the members 14-15.
Although I have described the-device as appliedto the door jamb, as soon as that is finished, it may be pulled off and applied ding edge of the door, as the nails 17 offer little or no resistance and arein place ready for imme diate application. 7
'As it is desirable that the face of the door he not drawn too tightly against the corredown the face of V,
spending :lace of the door jalnb, when against the door gainh, the il lfljllslllll screws 13 may be set to give a definite rchei' therefrom.
Having now particularr15" described my in- VLIltlOlL I hereby declare that what I claim as new and desire to be protected in by Letters Patent, is:
