ATTORNEY.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM MASON, ,OF PAWTUCKET, RHODE ISLAND.
' BUTT-GAGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.-
Application filed July e1, 1912. Serial No. 712,461.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM MASON, a
' connection with the application of hinges -to doors, and has for its essential objects a facile and certain means for determining the location and dimensions of the cut or cuts in a door amb and door margin 1ntended to receive any butt or butt-s of a hinge that it is desired to apply to the door and jamb.
A further object is'to render the device adjustable to any dimension of door jamb. and door and to varying dimensions of hinge butts; and finally to aiford the structure means for allowing a suitable area for the clearance of a door with relation to the jamb.
To the above ends essentially my invention consists in such parts and such combinations of parts as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification,-Figure 1 is a perspective view of my novel device applied to a door jamb, Figs. 2 and 3, are sections of the same on lines a: w and y y of Fig. 1, respectively, Fig. 4 is a transverse, sectional view of a door jamb showing in transverse section my gage applied thereto, and showing in broken lines the rear intended to be cut away from the jamb, and Fig. 5, is a similar transverse section of the door with my gage applied to the face thereof, the latter being shown in transverse sec tion, wherein the broken lines indicate the portion of the door intended to be cut away.
Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the .views.
My invention consists in detail of an oblong, rectangular plate A provided upon one edge with shoulders a. The plate is cut away intermediate its length for a substantial distance, forming an oblong, rectangular, intermediate opening B, thus dividing the plate into broad end portions 0 and D connected by a narrowstrip E. A slot F extending transversely from one edge of the portion C of the plateA is adapted -g provided with a head g.
to slidably receive a screw f provided with a head f, which overlaps the adjacent por tion of the plate, thus forming a binding screwfor adjusting purposes. A similar slot G is correspondingly located upon the portion D of the plate A to permit the loose passage therethrough of'the adjusting screw At the rear of the plate A is a fiat banH provided at its top' and bottom ends, respectively, with flat elevated projections I and J, which bear against the portions C and D of the plate A, and interspace, the bar H from the plate A,'whereby' the latter bar is in a plane parallel with the plane of the plate A but in the rear thereof.
The portions I and J are respectively-provided with threadedopenings i andj to receive the adjusting screws f and g. The latter screws afiord an adjustment of the bar H toward and away from the strip E of the plate A. This adjustment as will be later seen is to accommodate my gage to cuttings adapted to butts of varying width.
The portions I and J are respectively Patented Jan. 14;, 1913.
providedwith threaded openings 7c and-"Z adapted to receive the screws on and n, whose fiat ends are adapted to abut against the portions C and D of -the plate A. By operating these screws the bar H and itsend portions I and J can be adjusted at any desired distance toward and away from the plate A to accommodate my structure to cuttings of different depths demanded by the varying thicknesses of difierent hinge butts. Since the length of various butts vary provision is also made to adjust my device to such dilterences. The means for accomplishing this comprises a slidable plate 0 extending longitudinally of the plate A and provided with a portion P at its lower end at right angles to the plate 0. The portion 0 of the plate is provided with a longitudinal slot Q. through which loosely passes an adjusting screw R, whose head 1' overlaps the plate 0 and which works in the threaded opening r in the plate A. By means of the screw R plate 0 with its arm portion P is movable longitudinally of the opening B in the plate A, and since the portion I is provided with a shoulder portion 7; in its rear extending below the plane of While the. body of the plate ,A has its back surface resting against the face of'the jamb it will be observed that the rod H and its portions I and J extend beyond the'edge of the jamb S thereby locating the opening B of the plate over the jamh face, and, at the same time exposing so much of the adjacent face a of the jamb as it has been pr'edeten mined is required for the proper depth of cut in the jamb itself. After the gage has been thus located the operator'has merely to cut with a'chisel or other implement thematerial of the -jamb in the area indicated by the gage. It is usually advantageous to retainthe gage in a permanent position during the cutting process and for this purpose the portions C and D of the plate A are respectively provided with perforations V to permit the passage theret-hrough of fasten ing nails or screws. The plate A is applied in the same manner upon the edge of the door, as shown in Fig. 6. In Fig. 4 is shown a hinge W applied to the ja'mb in the door after they have been cut away by the operator.
VV-hat I claim is 1. In a butt gage, the combinationofa body plate provided with an opening inter mediate the length of the pl.ate,'and provided with transversely disposed slots, a bar 1 extending longitudinally of the plate and provided with an intermediate depression registering with the opening, screws in the bar registering 1n the slots, and screws in the bar adapted to abut against the rear faceof the body plate.
2. In a butt gage, the combination of a body plate provided with an opening intermediate its length, and provided with slots, a bar upon the rear face of' the body plate movable toward and away from the body plate, adjusting Screws in the bar registering inthe slots, a second plate mounted upon the face of the body plate, means upon the body plate engaging the-second plate for adjusting the last mentioned plate. longitu'dinally of the opening, and means in-the bar engaging the body plate for moving the bar toward and away from the body plate.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
, WILLIAM MASON. \Vitnesscs:
